We introduce the Three-Layer Hierarchical Ring Network Design Problem, which arises especially in the design of large telecommunication networks. The aim is to connect nodes that are assigned to three different layers using rings of bounded length. We present tailored Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) and GRASP approaches to solve large instances of this problem heuristically, and discuss computational results indicating the VNS' superiority. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

We present mixed integer programming approaches for optimally solving a combinatorial optimization problem arising in network design with additional quality of service constraints. The rooted delay- and delay-variation- constrained Steiner tree problem asks for a cost-minimal Steiner tree satisfying delay-constraints from source to terminals and a maximal variation-bound between particular terminal path-delays. Our MIP models are based on multi-commodity-flows and a layered graph transformation. For the latter model we propose some new sets of valid inequalities and an efficient separation method. Presented experimental results indicate that our layered graph approaches clearly outperform the flow-based model. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

We describe an innovative e-assessment tool for Surveying Education and report the results of a pilot study with a group of undergraduate students enrolled in the Building Construction Management Program at Purdue University. The e-assessment tool consists of two parts: a student's component and an instructor's component. The students' component is a Virtual Learning Environment that can be used by students to review surveying concepts and practices and get feedback on their understanding of the subject. The instructor's component is a summative assessment tool that measures the individual student's cognitive and practical abilities with high level of accuracy. Results of a pilot study with 31 students enrolled in an undergraduate surveying course show that students perceived the application as easy to use, very useful for reviewing class content, and effective at providing immediate and accurate feedback on their performance. A comparison between the grades obtained by manually grading the field exercise and the grades generated by the e-assessment tool showed a significant disagreement between the 2 sets of data, with the electronically generated grades being much lower. Analysis of the data recorded by the e-tool suggests that the deviation between the two sets of grades is due to the ability of the e-assessment tool to track the individual student's performance more accurately. © 2012 ICST Institute for computer Science, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering.

As a crucial security problem, anti-spoofing in biometrics, and particularly for the face modality, has achieved great progress in the recent years. Still, new threats arrive inform of better, more realistic and more sophisticated spoofing attacks. The objective of the 2nd Competition on Counter Measures to 2D Face Spoofing Attacks is to challenge researchers to create counter measures effectively detecting a variety of attacks. The submitted propositions are evaluated on the Replay-Attack database and the achieved results are presented in this paper.

Simultaneous visualization of multiple continuous data attributes in a single visualization is a task that is important for many application areas. Unsurprisingly, many methods have been proposed to solve this task. However, the behavior of such methods during the exploration stage, when the user tries to understand the data with panning and zooming, has not been given much attention. In this paper, we propose a method that uses procedural texture synthesis to create zoom-independent visualizations of three scalar data attributes. The method is based on random-phase Gabor noise, whose frequency is adapted for the visualization of the first data attribute. We ensure that the resulting texture frequency lies in the range that is perceived well by the human visual system at any zoom level. To enhance the perception of this attribute, we also apply a specially constructed transfer function that is based on statistical properties of the noise. Additionally, the transfer function is constructed in a way that it does not introduce any aliasing to the texture. We map the second attribute to the texture orientation. The third attribute is color coded and combined with the texture by modifying the value component of the HSV color model. The necessary contrast needed for texture and color perception was determined in a user study. In addition, we conducted a second user study that shows significant advantages of our method over current methods with similar goals. We believe that our method is an important step towards creating methods that not only succeed in visualizing multiple data attributes, but also adapt to the behavior of the user during the data exploration stage. © 2012 The Author(s).

Many virtual mirror and telepresence applications require novel viewpoint synthesis with little latency to user motion. Image-based visual hull (IBVH) rendering is capable of rendering arbitrary views from segmented images without an explicit intermediate data representation, such as a mesh or a voxel grid. By computing depth images directly from the silhouette images, it usually outperforms indirect methods. GPU-hardware accelerated implementations exist, but due to the lack of an intermediate representation no multi-GPU parallel strategies and implementations are currently available. This paper suggests three ways to parallelize the IBVH-pipeline and maps them to the sorting classification that is often applied to conventional parallel rendering systems. In addition to sort-first parallelization, we suggest a novel sort-last formulation that regards cameras as scene objects. We enhance this method's performance by a block-based encoding of the rendering results. For interactive systems with hard real-time constraints, we combine the algorithm with a multi-frame rate (MFR) system. We suggest a combination of forward and backward image warping to improve the visual quality of the MFR rendering. We observed the runtime behavior of the suggested methods and assessed how their performance scales with respect to input and output resolutions and the number of GPUs. By using additional GPUs, we reduced rendering times by up to 60%. Multi-frame rate viewing can even be ten times faster. © The Eurographics Association 2012.

Capturing real-world objects with laser-scanning technology has become an everyday task. Recently, the acquisition of dynamic scenes at interactive frame rates has become feasible. A high-quality visualization of the resulting point cloud stream would require a per-frame reconstruction of object surfaces. Unfortunately, reconstruction computations are still too time-consuming to be applied interactively. In this paper we present a local surface reconstruction and visualization technique that provides interactive feedback for reasonably sized point clouds, while achieving high image quality. Our method is performed entirely on the GPU and in screen space, exploiting the efficiency of the common rasterization pipeline. The approach is very general, as no assumption is made about point connectivity or sampling density. This naturally allows combining the outputs of multiple scanners in a single visualization, which is useful for many virtual and augmented reality applications. © The Eurographics Association 2012.
