We propose a unified variational formulation for joint motion estimation and segmentation with explicit occlusion handling. This is done by a multi-label representation of the flow field, where each label corresponds to a parametric representation of the motion. We use a convex formulation of the multi-label Potts model with label costs and show that the asymmetric map-uniqueness criterion can be integrated into our formulation by means of convex constraints. Explicit occlusion handling eliminates errors otherwise created by the regularization. As occlusions can occur only at object boundaries, a large number of objects may be required. By using a fast primal-dual algorithm we are able to handle several hundred motion segments. Results are shown on several classical motion segmentation and optical flow examples.

In distributed systems, likelihood of failure increases with increase in the number of processes and a single failure often renders the entire system state useless. Checkpointing and rollback recovery is a common technique used for increasing the system reliability against various anticipated and unanticipated failures. Checkpointing can be independent, quasi-synchronous and coordinated. Coordinated checkpointing can be blocking or non-blocking. Also, either all the processes in the distributed system may need to checkpoint or only a minimum number of processes may be required to checkpoint. Minimizing the number of processes to checkpoint may introduce blocking. The non-blocking checkpointing protocols introduce overhead of piggybacking some information for non-intrusiveness. Minimization of this piggybacked information is the objective of our work. We have designed a non-blocking coordinated checkpointing protocol for distributed systems with reliable communication channels that minimize piggybacked information on each message.

Medication non-adherence is a major problem to all stakeholders, posing escalating costs and risks to patients as well as substantial economic burden to the health care industry. Solutions that attempt to broaden the functions and capabilities of medication management have hitherto been employing a narrow-focused approach, often failing to address the multitude of factors that leads to the phenomena. In this paper, we present an experimental comparison of user attitude towards medication adherence using a single-focused versus a multifaceted personalized medication management system that has been implemented with elements of motivational and educational strategies. The findings from this research suggest evidence of the significance and usefulness of applying a multifaceted approach, in particular, the implementation of motivational and educational strategies in the design of a personalized medication management system in addressing medication non-adherence.

Wide area and thus continental mapping extending beyond national borders is a novel concept in civilian photogrammetry. The Microsoft Global Ortho Program was launched in the Spring of 2009 as a result of Microsoft's need for global geo-data at a high geometric resolution and radiometric excellence. By fall of 2012 more than 10 million km2 of the USA and 14 European countries will have been covered by seamless 30 cm GSD color-, 60 cm GSD false-color infrared ortho-mosaics and a 1 meter GSD digital surface model. The ortho-maps are being published to Microsoft's Bing Maps Internet mapping portal. The Global Ortho Program was designed for highly and unprecedented automated mapping of essentially entire continents. In 2011, exclusive of flight operations, the product output per person has been measured in excess of 275,000 square km per year. We describe research efforts that made this achievement possible. Those include a specially designed aerial sensor (Ultracam G), logistics simulation for fight planning and optimization, in-flight blur detection and subsequent automatic blur removal, modeling and removal of atmospheric and environmental conditions, automated shear detection and DTM refinement, an IT architecture to process >200,000 aerial images/day, and for creating over 1,000,000 km2 ortho-imagery and DSM data in 24 hours. While addressing these issues, we provide ideas how this might affect the future of spatial infrastructure initiatives.

This tutorial provides a detailed introduction to mobile Augmented Reality (AR). AR is a key user-interface technology for personalized, situated information delivery, navigation, on-demand instruction and games. The widespread availability and rapid evolution of smartphones enables software-only solutions for AR where it was previously necessary to assemble custom hardware solutions. However, ergonomic and technical limitations of smartphones as a platform make this a challenging endeavor. In particular, it is necessary to design novel efficient real-time computer vision and computergraphics algorithms, and create new lightweight forms of interaction with the environment through small form-factor devices. This tutorial will present selected technical achievements in this field and highlight some examples of successful application prototypes.

The use of procedural content generation to support adaptive games is starting to gain momentum in current research. However, there are still many open issues to tackle, namely the reusability of methodologies. Our research focuses on reusable and generic methods for linking the procedural generation of 3D game worlds with gameplay, as measured by player modelling techniques. As the interface for that link, we propose the use of gameplay semantics, a knowledge representation technique that allows our case-based generator to match content to player models. We present and discuss the implementation of our proposed method in an existing game, Stunt Playground. Gameplay semantics is created by designers in a generic way and is then used to procedurally generate player-matching Stunt Playground game worlds, both at the design and game stage. Current results show that our approach can automatically create such adaptive game content, thus effectively bridging game world designers, procedural generation and gameplay.

Current game worlds often fall short in providing consistency between the visual representation of the world and the way it feels, behaves, and reacts. This problem partly originates from the goal-oriented and cost-effective nature of the game development process, which mostly favors ad hoc solutions for one particular game, rather than investing in concepts like reusability and emergent gameplay. In broader terms, we observe that game worlds miss semantics, and we argue that its deployment has the potential to bring about the consistency missing in their content. Therefore, we present a novel approach aimed at enriching virtual entities in game worlds with information about their roles, how they relate to others, and how they can affect and interact with players, NPCs, and with each other. We discuss several requirements to achieve these goals, and introduce a semantic model to represent game worlds. In order to support and validate this model, we have developed Entika, a framework to facilitate the deployment of semantics during game development, as well as its maintenance during run-time. Furthermore, we briefly discuss several applications that demonstrate the power of this semantic model for game worlds. After careful evaluation of our semantic game world model and framework, we conclude that a semantically rich world representation can substantially assist designers in creating much more consistent game worlds.

Discovering frequent and rare spatio-temporal patterns in large amounts of streaming visual data is of great practical interest since it allows for automated applications of activity and surveillance analysis. In this paper we present a computationally efficient and memory preserving clustering scheme which uses streaming input from a stationary-mounted neuromorphic camera and performs density-based clustering in a high-dimensional feature space. The clustering scheme can treat arbitrarily shaped complex distributions and employs an intuitive density-based criterion to assign previously unseen samples to categories of frequently observed and rare. The spatio-temporal structure of neuromorphic video is encoded into sparse binary features, which allow for fast Hamming distance based neighborhood analysis in the feature space. Moreover, data sparsity brings advantages with respect to memory-efficient transmission and storage of the learned statistical model when used within a camera network. We present rare event detection results in a multiple-day neuromorphic data sequence and discuss strengths, failure modes and possible extensions of the proposed method.

In this joint work, a complete framework for modeling, simulating and visualizing multiphase fluid flow within an extraction column is presented. We first present a volume-of-fluid simulation, which is able to predict the surface of the droplets during coalescence. However, a fast and efficient model is needed for the simulation of a liquid-liquid extraction column due to the high number of occurring droplets. To simulate the velocity and droplet size in a DN32 extraction column, a coupled computational fluid dynamic-population balance model solver is used. The simulation is analyzed using path-line based visualization techniques. A novel semi-automatic re-seeding technique for droplet path-line integration is proposed. With our technique, path-lines of fluid droplets can be re-initialized after contact with the stirring devices. The droplet breakage is captured, allowing the engineer to improve the design of liquid-liquid columns layout.
