Architectural elements are the components and details of buildings. Their unique set, combination, design, construction technique form the architectural style of buildings. Building facade classification by architectural styles is viewed as a task of classifying separate architectural structural elements. In the scope of building facade architectural style classification the current paper targets the problem of classification of Gothic and Baroque architectural elements called tracery, pediment and balustrade. Since certain gradient directions dominate on the shape of each architectural element, discrimination between dominating gradients means classification of architectural elements and thus architectural styles. We use local features to describe gradient directions. Our approach is based on clustering and learning of local features and yields a high classification rate.

In this paper we present the architecture of ViRAT (Virtual Reality for Advanced Tele-operation), the hardware-software platform we developed to support researches and studies dealing with multi-robotics. The achieved architecture is multi-purposes and as such, allows a wide spectrum of operation modes ranging from full tele-operated controls to full autonomous exploitation. From the hardware point of view, the platform offers the possibility to integrate heterogeneous robots having different mobility (wheeled, Humanoids, etc) as well as embedded sensing capabilities (video, laser-scanner, IMU, etc.). From the software side, the developed architecture is modular for more flexibility and adaptability: it includes human-robots interfaces (HRI) bricks, together with supervision and low/high level controls. After presenting the architecture of the ViRAT platform, we give some examples and some use cases to illustrate the performances of ViRAT and the easiness of developing around it.

Adopting e-health technologies may be one of the ways to ease the burden of hospitals, where nurses and doctors may be deployed more efficiently to ensure better patient-centered care. The adoption of e-health not only depends on the government, industry players and the current state of technology. Part of the successful adoption also relies on the users' need for it and their attitude towards using e-health in their daily routine. In this paper, we will share the qualitative research findings of 30 participants (10 families). The findings are based on in-depth interviews in users' homes. With these, the Human Factors team hopes to bridge the gaps between three-generation families' (youth, adult, elderly) needs and attitudes towards e-health technologies. This is in view of having designers, researchers and engineers to develop e-health technologies that would be used and adopted by users (three-generation families) in their daily routine.

The key frame extraction is designed for obtaining a (very) compressed set of video frames that summarizes the essential content of a video sequence. In this paper, a well-known information theoretic measure, the Jensen-Rényi divergence (JRD), is studied to estimate the frame-by-frame distance between consecutive video images, for segmenting shots/subshots and for choosing key frames. Our new key frame extraction method, which is effective and computationally fast, contributes to a good and quick understanding of a large amount of video data.

The paper presents a systematic approach to synthesizing and implementing fast algorithms for computing the DCT of a power-of-two size. The main features of the obtainable algorithms are regularity of their signal flow graphs and low arithmetic complexity. Multiplierless implementation of the algorithms is based on the algebraic integer (AI) technique. A general AI encoding scheme for fast DCT algorithms is presented. The approach is demonstrated by using it to derive an AI-based low-error fast implementation of the 16-point DCT.
