As the result of a qualitative study, this contribution reports the major themes that emerged relative to student approaches and processes in spatial problem solving. Using phenomenological inquiry, differences between high and low spatial ability participants were examined. Pedagogically important findings included the behaviors of (1) working across views to solve problems, (2) double-checking while solving problems, and (3) the ability to decompose spatial problems. This article provides useful insights into how individuals with varying levels of spatial ability tackle engineering graphics problems. It also includes textural material from the study. The author makes a recommendation for the inclusion of spatial decomposition exercises in instructional materials.

In this chapter we will introduce a new effective framework for learning an object detector. The main idea is to minimize the manual effort when learning a classifier and to combine the power of a discriminative classifier with the robustness of a generative model. Starting with motion detection an initial set of positive examples is obtained by analyzing the geometry (aspect ratio) of the motion blobs. Using these samples a discriminative classifier is trained using an online version of AdaBoost. In fact, applying this classifier nearly all objects are detected but there is a great number of false positives. Thus, we apply a generative classifier to verify the obtained detections and to decide if a detected patch represents the object of interest or not. As we have a huge amount of data (video stream) we can be very conservative and use only patches for (positive or negative) updates if we are very confident about our decision. Applying this update rules, an incrementally better classifier is obtained without any user interaction. Moreover, an already trained classifier can be retrained online and can therefore easily be adapted to a completely different scene. We demonstrate the framework on different scenarios including pedestrian and car detection.
But a few years ago educators were dealing with the implementation of outcomes based accreditation. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and technology (ABET) started this process with the TC2k criterion in 2000. S...

The creation of clutter-free orthophotos and 3D GIS data bases is desireable. Cars parked in the streets or driving on the road are of little interest in an orthophoto or in a GIS. We are demonstrating the ability of automatically detecting nearly all cars shown in an urban aerial photography at a ground sampling distance in the range of 8 cm to 15 cm. The image shapes from those cars can be inpainted to create a car-less orthophoto. In addition, the shapes can also be used to remove the effect of cars on the digital elevation model by filtering the elevations representing cars and thereby improving the Bald Earth DTM. We study the use of redundancy from image overlaps and the introduction of color to further improve the score beyond the current high success.

Biometrie data have been integrated in all new European passports, since the member states of the European Commission started to implement the EU Council Regulation No 2252/2004 on standards for security features and biometrics in passports. The additional integration of three- dimensional models promises significant performance enhancements for border controls. By combining the geometry- and texture-channel information of the face, 3D face recognition systems provide an improved robustness while processing variations in poses and problematic lighting conditions when taking the photo. To assess the potential of three-dimensional face recognition, the 3D Face project was initiated. This paper outlines the approach and research objectives of this project: Not only shall the recognition performance be increased but also a new, fake resistant acquisition device is to be developed. In addition, methods for protection of the stored template data in the biometric reference are under development.
This paper describes a combination of an automated image acquisition method and a probabilistic tracking method for analysis of the 3D microstructure of a sheet of paper. A prototype which combines microtomy and light...

Interactive object extraction is an important part in any image editing software. We present a two step segmentation algorithm that first obtains a binary segmentation and then applies matting on the border regions to obtain a smooth alpha channel. The proposed segmentation algorithm is based on the minimization of the Geodesic Active Contour energy. A fast Total Variation minimization algorithm is used to find the globally optimal solution. We show how user interaction can be incorporated and outline an efficient way to exploit color information. A novel matting approach, based on energy minimization, is presented. Experimental evaluations are discussed, and the algorithm is compared to state of the art object extraction algorithms. The GPU based binaries are available online.
Transfer functions are an essential part of volume visualization. In multimodal visualization at least two values exist at every sample point. Additionally, other parameters, such as gradient magnitude, are often retr...
