Digital face images and fingerprint images are included in all newly issued EU passports [Bus06]. Face images stored within electronic passports (ePass) have to conform to ISO/IEC 19794-5 [Inta] which defines a number of quality requirements for facial image data. A software application (QS Software) is used to verify photographic image properties (pose, head/image size, height-to-page ratio, etc.) as well as setup properties (color depth, contrast, brightness, etc.) [Intb]. To ensure reliability and reproducibility of automated facial image processing systems it is necessary to assess the quality of existing software packages. To this end a database of facial image data would be of significant value as a testing base [HSM06]. The goal for project series FIReBIRD (Facial Image REcognition Benchmark Including Realistic Disturbances) is to establish a database of facial images that can be used worldwide for compliance and performance testing and quality verification based on ISO standards. FIReBIRD will be conducted in close cooperation of Fraunhofer IGD and the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and will be carried out in parallel and in international cooperation with the U.S. National Institute of Standards and technology (NIST) and the British National Physical Laboratory (NPL). After successful completion of a conceptual framework the international database will be built. This facial image database will consist of distinct data sets used by two separate user groups for two different purposes: public test data that is available for algorithm developers and non-public test data for system evaluation accessible only to authorized organizations such as BSI/Fraunhofer IGD, NPL and NIST.

In general, a duplicated or tampered one of document can be obtained by duplicating machine. How to distinguish watermark quality from the first printing document and the duplicated or tampered one? In this paper we introduce a document watermarking arithmetic which is robust to copying. The arithmetic is based on the FMT transformation. The document is regarded as one image and is embedded 8 digitals. Experiments results show that the scheme can resist first printing and scan process. Furthermore watermark cannot be extracted from the duplicated or tampered one.

The high resolution NEXRAD level II data provides critical information for researchers and the broader community to understand, monitor, and predict weather in a timely manner. There are several limitations in existing systems for providing easy-to-access 3D visualization of the radar data to the user community. In this paper, we present a scalable and user driven solution for near-real-time remote radar data access, processing, and 3D visualization. The system provides multi-layered interfaces for a broad range of users with different levels of services, allowing them to interactively explore data from multiple radar stations over a time period of interest. Parallel data pre-processing using the Purdue Condor pool and volume caching are implemented to help improve the system response time and scalability. The system also provides reusable radar data services and a set of access points which can be invoked by third party applications. With this hierarchical and user driven design, our system creates a rich and easy to use NEXRAD data service environment for research and education users.

Tracking across non-overlapping camera views is still an unsolved problem. Appearance is a popular cue that does not work when the views are considerably different. This paper proposes tracking in the 3-D space without using appearance. We propose to use the geometry between the two cameras. Linear inhomogeneous triangulation is expanded by a Gaussian random walk model. Tracking is then triangulation followed by a re-projection given the assumption that two persons cannot occupy the same space at the same time. A first experiment with a single person shows the success of this new tracking approach even with a 2m gap between the fields of view of the cameras.

In this paper we introduce a framework for automated text recognition from images. We first describe a simple but efficient text detection and recognition method based on analysis of maximally stable extremal regions (MSERs) and simple template matching which allows to provide initial character recognition results. The main emphasis of the paper is on introducing a novel method for exploiting contextual information to improve the obtained recognition results. We propose to analyze the results of Web search engine queries on two levels of detail, which both allow to significantly improve the overall text recognition performance. The experimental evaluations on reference data sets prove that even based on a low quality single character recognition method the proposed Web search engine extension enables reasonable text recognition results.

This paper introduces a network architecture called Vehicular Wireless Burst Switching (VWBS). The main objective of this architecture is to provide low-cost connectivity solution for isolated and dispersed regions with no networks infrastructure. The proposed architecture is based on the concept of Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) and can be applied to various scenarios, including rapid deployment of emergency communication systems when all communication links have failed. In this paper, we present an overview of VWBS networks and show how their performance, in terms of average packet delays, can be improved using store-and-forward devices called relay nodes. Furthermore, we introduce several heuristic algorithms, which can be used to place minimum number of relay nodes. Through computer simulations, we compare the performance of the algorithms and their tradeoffs. We conclude our work by examining possible open research issues in VWBS. © 2008 IEEE.

We present an adaptive dynamic load balancing scheme for 3D texture based sort-last parallel volume rendering on a PC cluster equipped with GPUs. Our scheme exploits not only task parallelism but also data parallelism during rendering by combining the hierarchical data structures (octree and parallel BSP tree) in order to skip empty regions and distribute proper workloads to rendering nodes. Our scheme can also conduct a valid parallel rendering and image compositing in visibility order by employing a 3D clustering algorithm. To alleviate the imbalance when the transfer function is changed, a load rebalancing is inexpensively supported by exchanging only needed data. A detailed performance analysis is provided and scaling characteristics of our scheme are discussed. These show that our scheme can achieve significant performance gains by increasing parallelism and decreasing synchronizing costs compared to the traditional static distribution schemes. Event-based systems are gaining increasing popularity for building loosely coupled and distributed systems. Since business processes are becoming more interconnected and event-driven, event-based systems fit well for supporting and monitoring business processes. In this paper, we present an event-based business intelligence tool, the Event Tunnel framework. It provides an interactive visualization of event streams to support business analysts in exploring business incidents. The visualization is based on the metaphor of considering the event stream as a cylindrical tunnel, which is presented to the user from multiple perspectives. The information of single events laid out in the Event Tunnel is encoded in event glyphs that allow for a selective mapping of event attributes to colors, size and position. Different policies for the placement of the events in the tunnel as well as a clustering mechanism generate various views on historical event data. The Event Tunnel is able to display the relationships between events. This facilitates users to discover root causes and causal dependencies of event patterns. Our framework couples the event-tunnel visualization with query tools that allow users to search for relevant events within a data repository. Using query, filler and highlighting operations the analyst can navigate through the Event Tunnel until the required information or event patterns become visible. We demonstrate our approach with use cases from the fraud management and logistics domain.

One of the main obstacles in integrating 3D volume visualization in the clinical workflow is the time-consuming process of adjusting parameters such as viewpoint, transfer functions, and clipping planes required to generate a diagnostically relevant image. Current applications therefore make scarce use of volume rendering and instead primarily employ 2D views generated through standard techniques such as multi-planar reconstruction (MPR). However, in many cases 3D renditions can supply additional useful information. This paper discusses ongoing work which aims to improve the integration of 3D visualization into the diagnostic workflow by automatically generating meaningful renditions based on minimal user interaction. A method for automatically generating 3D views for structures in 2D slices based on a single picking interaction is presented.

With the rapid development of embedded system, distributed and mobile computing technologies, more and more intelligent space are establishing around us, such as smart meeting room, smart home, intelligent museum, digital library and so on. Meanwhile, ubiquitous computing has received an intensive interest in the past years. Many models have been proposed. How to utilize these models to enhance those intelligent spaces is a challenging research problem. We have introduced the prototype of rich servants service (RSS) model (Shi et al., 2007). In this paper, we will extend the RSS model to fulfill those intelligent spaces. The model defines elements, interfaces, agents, services discovery and other facts related to the system. Through a case, we show how to combine the RSS model with real-world applications.
