Smoothing fingerprint ridge orientation involves a principal discrepancy. Too little smoothing can result in noisy orientation fields (OF), too much smoothing will harm high curvature areas, especially singular points (SP). In this paper we present a fingerprint ridge orientation model based on Legendre polynomials. The motivation for the proposed method can be found by analysing the almost exclusively used method in literature for orientation smoothing, proposed by Witkin and Kass (1987) more than two decades ago. The main contribution of this paper argues that the vectorial data (sine and cosine data) should be smoothed in a coupled way and the approximation error should not be evaluated employing vectorial data. For evaluating the proposed method we use a Poincare-Index based SP detection algorithm. The experiments show, that in comparison to competing methods the proposed method has improved orientation smoothing capabilities, especially in high curvature areas.

Biometrics is a huge and very fast growing domain of methods for uniquely recognizing humans based on one or more intrinsic physical or behavioral traits with applications in many different areas, e.g., surveillance, person verification and identification. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) provides a number of specifications to prepare automated recognition from travel document photos. The goal of these specifications is to increase security in civil aviation on the basis of standardized biometric data. Due to this international standard, there is a high demand for automatically checking face images to assist civil service employees in decision-making. In this work, we present a face normalization and analysis system implementing several parts of the ICAO specification. Our key contribution of this analysis is the fusion of different established classifiers to boost performance of the overall system. Our results show the superior checking quality on facial images due to utilizing classifier fusion compared to a single classifier decision.

On-line boosting allows to adapt a trained classifier to changing environmental conditions or to use sequentially available training data. Yet, two important problems in the on-line boosting training remain unsolved: (i) classifier evaluation speed optimization and, (ii) automatic classifier complexity estimation. In this paper we show how the on-line boosting can be combined with Waldpsilas sequential decision theory to solve both of the problems. The properties of the proposed on-line WaldBoost algorithm are demonstrated on a visual tracking problem. The complexity of the classifier is changing dynamically depending on the difficulty of the problem. On average, a speedup of a factor of 5-10 is achieved compared to the non-sequential on-line boosting.

Lane detection is an essential component of autonomous mobile robot applications. Any lane detection method has to deal with the varying conditions of the lane and surrounding that the robot would encounter while moving. Lane detection procedure can provide estimates for the position and orientation of the robot within the lane and also can provide a reference system for locating other obstacles in the path of the robot. In this paper we present a method for lane detection in video frames of a camera mounted on top of the mobile robot. Given video input from the camera, the gradient of the current lane in the near field of view are automatically detected. Randomized Hough Transform is used for extracting parametric curves from the images acquired. A priori knowledge of the lane position is assumed for better accuracy of lane detection.

We present a variable neighborhood search approach for a network design problem occurring in real world when the bandwidth of an existing network shall be enhanced. Using two different neighborhood structures we show that a carefully designed combination of a metaheuristic and an exact method based on integer linear programming is able to improve solution quality compared to using heuristic methods only.

Fails in aerospace missions, caused by broken communication and unexpected situation, have generated a pressing need for intelligent adaptation, repairing and upgrading capabilities in on-board maintenance (OBM) applications. In this paper, we present a fault-tolerant on-board evolutionary platform for aerospace applications which utilizes FPGA technology. To avoid complex evolution process of circuit and function, we take tasks as our basic chromosome and implement relocation of hardware and software tasks in spaceborne computing systems. Tasks can run in software space or be put into hardware task slots according to energy-efficient or real-time requirements. The allocation of hardware and software tasks will adapt to the requirement of current condition to meet real-time, energy-efficient or environment requirements. The process is transparent to users so that there is no need to explicitly specify reconfiguration commands. Sleeping tasks, redundant FPGAs and version switching control are combined together to achieve fault-tolerance in the on-board evolutionary platform. Design theories and strategies of FOEP are described in detail. System performance is also evaluated using simulated experiments.

In this paper, we describe a digital library initiative for non-textual documents. The proposed framework will integrate different types of content-repositories - each one specialized for a specific multimedia domain - into one seamless system and will add features such as automatic annotation, full-text retrieval and recommender services to non-textual documents. Two multimedia domains, 3D graphics and music, will be introduced. The repositories can be searched using both textual (metadata-based) and non-textual retrieval mechanisms (e.g. using a complex sketch-based interface for searching in 3D-models or a query-by-humming interface for music). Domain-specific metadata models are developed and workflows for automated content-based data analysis and indexing proposed.

This paper introduces techniques for the exploration of images augmented with additional information. We present the so-called meta-previewer and propose the cascading-views which are widgets that can assist the end-user in interactively exploring metadata embedded in augmented images. In this regard, the term Interactive Images (Sonnet et al., 2008) will refer to those augmented images which allow the end-user to request further information which is in relation to the entire image or parts of it. Using our tools, data exploration process is accomplished following three steps: (i) getting an overview of the image regions that contain additional information, (ii) requesting and displaying the additional information which is of interest, and (iii) diving into that additional information to get even more information linked with it.

In an effort to develop a tool for automatic ontology building from Malay text based on formal concept analysis, an effective natural language processing (NLP) tool as the pre-processing components is needed. The goal of the study is to investigate whether existing Malay NLP tools can be a viable component to be part of the ontology learning tool. This paper discusses the outcome of the study on three NLP applications. The annotated corpus approach was adopted in this study as deemed suitable for exploratory research. Using the metrics relative subject recall and precision, the results obtained show that statistical modeling technique outperformed pola grammar technique.
