Scan is a widely used Design-for-Testability technique to improve test and diagnosis quality. Many defects may cause scan chains to fail. In this paper, an observation point oriented Deterministic Diagnostic Pattern Generation (DDPG) method was proposed for compound defects, which tolerates the system defects during scan chain diagnosis. Instead of sensitizing multiple paths proposed in our prior work, the proposed new DDPG method directly targets as many observation points as possible to observe the loading error occurred on the targeted scan cell. Experimental results on ISCASpsila89 benchmark circuits show that the proposed DDPG method improves the effectiveness and efficiency of diagnosing compound defects, compared to our prior research.

Previous work has shown that Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) can be used to automatically acquire taxonomies from Indo-European text. The taxonomies are built via FCA using syntactic dependencies as attributes such as verb/head-object, verb/head-subject and verb/prepositional phrase-complement. This paper discusses the overall process of learning taxonomy using FCA with the same syntactic dependencies as the English language which is then applied on Malay texts. Malay, an Austronesian language follows the same Subject-Verb-Object sentence structure like English but syntactically different. The result shows a lower recall and precision compared to related work in other languages. The poor result is caused by several factors such as the selection of smoothing technique. The experimental result indicates that the current smoothing technique with FCA does not produce good results. Therefore, as an addition to the syntactic dependencies, we used linguistic pattern such as Hearst’s pattern in finding similarities between terms. We compare the results of our technique against the cosine used in the FCA-based taxonomy learning approach. The proposed technique attains both higher precision and recall than the previous technique.

We present a method to produce smooth transitions between arbitrary pieces of character animation, which is based on the application of dynamic transition curves. Unlike other approaches, we achieve anytime interruptibility for body expressions, that is, gestures can be changed anytime during execution while maintaining naturalness of motion transition. To obtain highly natural skeletal movement, our approach is integrated with motion parametrization, as proposed in the\Verbs and Adverbs" technique [18], and further methods of fuzzy motion blending. We will demonstrate how the latest version of the Multimodal Presentation Markup Language (MPML3D) integrates parameterized agent behavior, and can support the incorporation of personality and emotional attentiveness in a straightforward way. One of the main objectives in engineering departments of large industries is the implementation of integrated information systems to manage their projects' life cycle. EnViron (environment for virtual objects navigation) is an application motivated by the demand to use virtual reality (VR) in large industrial engineering models generated by CAD tools. EnViron's main goal is to offer 3D visualization resources for CAD models with enough realism to be used for virtual prototyping, collaborative design review, change management systems and training, among other activities.

Historically, the ACM Multimedia Conference is split into a "technical" program and an "arts" program. These programs sometimes seem completely separate from one another, victims of a "semantic gap" between disciplines. The goal of this panel is to create a space in which scientists learn from artists, and arts from science. We need to discover new connections between modalities of research. In order to create the most exciting and powerful future forms of interactive multimedia systems, the ones that will create the most beneficial broader impact on humanity, we need to foster new collaborations between artists and scientists. This panel seeks to bridge the great divide of language and communities that has fragmented us, creating a new space for developing connections between the arts and sciences of multimedia research, as embodied through the artists and scientists of ACM Multimedia. The goal is to make this conference a premier site for catalyzing emergent connections. Among the ancient Greeks, the techne, which included the sciences, were based in the arts. Our modes of knowledge production have since separated and grown alienated. "What weird stuff are those people doing?" To bridge the divide, we must understand and acknowledge differences, and use this as a basis for discovering common ground. In the sciences, knowledge is constructed empirically, through hypotheses and validations. Aesthetics and concepts play essential roles in how works of art are formulated to stimulate experiences. Where do these aims intersect and how might they inform each other? In this conference, one track develops pattern recognition methods for content analysis and retrieval. Another develops network and system techniques. Applications invoke these methods in usable systems. Human-centered multimedia serves as a bridge connecting human experiences with algorithmic methods. The interactive art program develops new concepts of how multimedia can function culturally, amidst society,

Feature-based flow visualization is naturally dependent on feature extraction. To extract flow features, often higher-order properties of the flow data are used such as the Jacobian or curvature properties, implicitly describing the flow features in terms of their inherent flow characteristics (e.g., collinear flow and vorticity vectors). In this paper we present recent research which leads to the (not really surprising) conclusion that feature extraction algorithms need to be extended to a time-dependent analysis framework (in terms of time derivatives) when dealing with unsteady flow data. Accordingly, we present two extensions of the parallel vectors based vortex extraction criteria to the time-dependent domain and show the improvements of feature-based flow visualization in comparison to the steady versions of this extraction algorithm both in the context of a high-resolution dataset, i.e., a simulation specifically designed to evaluate our new approach, as well as for a real-world dataset from a concrete application. © 2006 IEEE.

Delay-tolerant networking (DTN) is an architecture to enable data communications between isolated or remote regions, where long delays and intermittent connectivity can be tolerated. An emerging class of DTN, called vehicular DTNs (VDTN), exploits transportation systems as the transport layer to transfer data. In these networks, vehicles (e.g., busses, boats, trains) act as mobile nodes and carry data messages around. Mobile nodes can exchange data messages using devices called relay nodes. Relay nodes, placed in strategic positions along vehicle routes, have the capability to download, store, and upload the data messages from/to the mobile nodes. An important issue in VDTN is the optimal placement of the relay nodes such that delay-tolerant connectivity in VDTN is ensured at minimum cost. In this paper we show that the problem of optimal relay node placement is an NP-hard problem. Other contributions of this paper are the formulation of the relay node placement problem using ILP and the proposal of heuristic algorithms solving the optimization problem. Using simulation results, we compare the performance of each algorithm under different network constraints, such as node storage capability and network topology.

Scan chain failure diagnosis has become an important means for silicon debug and yield improvement. Although plenty of prior work discussed how to perform scan chain diagnosis, most of the previously proposed techniques made an assumption that the system logic is fault-free, which could be an impractical assumption leading to incorrect diagnostic results. In this paper, we propose a scan chain deterministic diagnostic pattern generation (DDPG) method that can tolerate the faults in the system logic without degradation of chain diagnostic resolution and precision. The entire flow includes three steps. In the first step, patterns are created to propagate the state of a targeted scan cell to as many reliable observation points as possible. In the second step, the load error probability of each targeted scan cell is calculated based on the hamming distances between the observed responses and the expected good or faulty responses. In the last step, a suspect profile is plotted, which can be used to identify the suspect scan cell(s) based on ranking scores. Experimental results show that the diagnostic resolution and precision are not degraded even with dozens of faults injected into the system logic.

Strategies for bridging learning styles

Regardless of the instrument used to determine learning styles, it is commonly accepted that people learn in diffèrent ways. As Professors, we tend to teach in a style that matches the way we ourselves learn. This may or may not match the tearning styles of the students in our classroom. As graphics educators, we cannot meet every student's learning style at all times, however we can use our understanding of learning styles to address the differences between our teaching style and the students' learning styles. This paper is follow-up of a paper presented at the ASEE Annual Conference in Portland, June 2005. The Portland paper reported the results of a survey administered to graphic professionals and graphics students. Using the results ofthat one survey we can generalize that graphic professionals strongly favor (70 percent) the Concrete Sequential learning style, while only 34 percent of graphics students favor this style. On the other hand, 51 percent of the students favored the Concrete Random style, which was favored by only 34 percent of the faculty (Sadowski ***., 2005). Therefare, to increase the effectiveness of their teaching, graphics educators must make an effort to "bridge" the gaps created by the differences in teaching and learning styles. In this paper the authors look at instructional strategies and techniques that graphics educators can employ to teach students with different learning styles. Often basic style adjustments, additional explanations, or alternative activities can help a student learn and achieve success. As educators we need to select the most appropriate style for the learning situation and determine the importance of matching the styles of the learners in order to achieve the intended goal.

As computing is changing and becoming increasingly social in nature, the role of emotions in computing has become ever more relevant and commercial. Emotions are central to culture, creativity, and interaction. The topic attracts more and more researchers from a range of multidisciplinary fields including design, gaming, sensor technologies, psychology and sociology. The need for discussion, exchange of ideas, and interdisciplinary collaboration is ever-increasing as the community grows. This workshop will meet requirements of individuals working in the field, giving them a podium to explore different aspects of emotion in HCI, raise questions and network with like-minded people on common subjects.
