While some file-formats become unreadable after short periods, others remain interpretable over a long-term. Among the over 1.000 file-formats, some are better and some are less suited for long-term preservation. A standardized process for evaluating the stability of a file-format is described in this paper and its practical use is shown with file-formats for 3D-objects. Recommendations to users of 3D-applications are given in the last section of this article. Some of the results are used in PROBADO, a sophisticated search engine for nontraditional objects (such as 3D-documents, music etc.).

We describe a method for computing an implicit function that represents a surface by its zero level set, given a set of points scattered over the surface and associated with surface normal vectors. This implicit function is defined as a linear combination of compactly supported radial basis functions. Our method is suitable for testing whether a given point is interior or exterior to the surface, previously only associated with globally supported or globally regularized radial basis functions. We use a two-level interpolation approach. In the coarse scale interpolation, we set basis function centers by a grid that covers the enlarged bounding box of the given point set and compute their signed distances to the underlying surface using local quadratic approximations of the nearest surface points. Then a fitting to the residual errors on the surface points and additional off-surface points is performed with fine scale basis functions. The final function is the sum of the two intermediate functions and is a good approximation of the signed distance field to the surface in the bounding box. Examples of surface reconstruction and set operations between shapes are provided.

Local image descriptors have proved themselves as useful tools for many computer vision tasks such as matching points between multiple images of a scene and object recognition. Current descriptors, such as SIFT, are designed to match image features with unique local neighborhoods. However, the interest point detectors used with SIFT often fail to select perceptible local structures in the image, and the SIFT descriptor does not directly encode the local neighborhood shape. In this paper we propose a symmetry based interest point detector and radial local structure descriptor which consistently captures the majority of basic local image structures and provides a geometrical description of the structure boundaries. This approach concentrates on the extraction of shape properties in image patches, which are an intuitive way to represent local appearance for matching and classification. We explore the specificity and sensitivity of this local descriptor in the context of classification of natural patterns. The implications of the performance comparison with standard approaches like SIFT are discussed.

Nowadays, remote control applications via the Internet are going to be used more and more widely with the development of powerful chips and network technology. For applications which do not need real time communication or persistent connection and have a little amount of data transportation, conventional approaches based on Web services either are a little bit complex, or have a higher overhead. In this paper we introduce another method called WeeRMES, a Web services based email extension for remote monitoring of embedded systems, to be supplement of conventional remote control methods in some special occasions. Thanks to the model, we are able to do all those things using emails such as sending devices instructions, inspecting device status and gathering data using XML capsulated messages. User interfaces can be dynamically achieved by means of XForms generated by Java classes loaded on target devices. Furthermore, researches are carried out on security mechanism to ensure safety and robustness of the system. An idiographic implementation is given as an example in the end.

The general goal of our research is the creation of a natural and intuitive interface for navigation, interaction, and input/recognition of American Sign Language (ASL) math signs in immersive Virtual Environments (VE) for the Deaf. The specific objective of this work is the development of two new gesture recognition systems for SMILE™, an immersive learning game that employs a fantasy 3D virtual environment to engage deaf children in math-based educational tasks. Presently, SMILE includes standard VR interaction devices such as a 6DOF wand, a pair of pinch gloves, and a dance platform. In this paper we show a significant improvement of the application by proposing two new gesture control mechanisms: system (1) is based entirely on hand gestures and makes use of a pair of 18-sensor data gloves, system (2) is based on hand and body gestures and makes use of a pair of data gloves and a motion tracking system. Both interfaces support first-person motion control, object selection and manipulation, and real-time input/ recognition of ASL numbers zero to twenty. Although the systems described in the paper rely on high-end, expensive hardware, they can be considered a first step toward the realization of an effective immersive sign language interface. © 2007 ICST

This paper presents algorithms for vision-based classification of vehicles based on vehicle logo in monocular image of traffic scenes recorded by a stationary camera. The intended application is automatic recognition of vehicle type for secure access and traffic monitoring applications, a problem not hitherto considered at such a level of accuracy. In recognition of vehicle type, differing with other researchers who attend to the recognition of shape, size of vehicle, we pay attention to the location and recognition of vehicle logo. The vehicle logo is unique mark of vehicle type (both make and model). We demonstrate that a relatively simple vehicle logo recognition method from front images can be used to obtain high performance verification and recognition of vehicle type. Firstly, the vehicle logo can be rough detected by prior knowledge, such as license, and then logo can be exactly detected by edge feature. Finally, the logo can be recognized using template matching and edge orientation histograms. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Biological soft tissues such as tendons, ligaments, articular cartilages and blood vessels consist of collagen fibers that may form collagen fiber bundles (CFBs). In order to develop reliable biomechanical models, it is crucial to have a tool available for the identification of the structural arrangement of CFBs in soft tissue. The task of bundle segmentation becomes quite difficult if the bundles touch each other, show a significant fiber crimp and are only partially visible. A strong fiber crimp leads to high-variance local orientations within a bundle that considerably complicate the bundle segmentation. Straightforward segmentation that combines regions of similar local orientations will fail. In this work we propose a fully automatic vision algorithm that is able to segment even strongly crimped and densely arranged but linearly oriented CFBs

Web-based distributed cooperative design is an important technology in the computer supported advanced manufacturing. After analyzing the advantages and drawbacks of the existing research and work, this paper presents an agent-based cooperative design platform which utilizes Web service to realize interoperability in vehicle headlights design. Compared with other strategies, we put emphases on real-time communication between designers and high speed browse of all models. Our platform also has a good compatibility with various model-design kits by adopting intelligent agents. The proposed approach provides designers with excellent human-computer interaction, more flexibility and enables distributed collaborators to cooperate efficiently. The platform can greatly shorten product development period as well as time to market.
