The recent development of distributed smart camera networks allows for automated multiple view processing. Quick and easy calibration of uncalibrated multiple camera setups is important for practical uses of such systems by non-experts and in temporary setups. In this paper we discuss options for calibration, illustrated with a basic two-camera setup where each camera is a smart camera mote with a highly parallel SIMD processor and an 8051 microcontroller. In order to accommodate arbitrary (lens) distortion, perspective mapping and transforms for which no analytic inverse is known, we propose the use of neural networks to map projective grid space back to Euclidean space for use in 3D localization and 3D view interpretation.

In this paper we give a detailed state-of-the-art review for the design and implementation of embedded wireless ad-hoc systems as they are applied for multimedia data transmission. More precisely, this paper focuses on eHealth applications with specific quality of service (QoS) constraints which have to be treated differently compared to other, already standardized systems. Different techniques to secure as well as enhance the reliability of the transmission will be discussed. Furthermore, we present the design of an embedded interactive system for distributed multimedia processing for telehealth. In this interactive home care system, speech recognition is used to enable easy user control. Additionally, the system consists of several wireless network cameras to perform full indoor patient surveillance.

Object pose (location and orientation) estimation is a common task in many computer vision applications. Although many methods exist, most algorithms need manual initialization and lack robustness to illumination variation, appearance change, and partial occlusions. We propose a fast method for automatic pose estimation without manual initialization based on shape matching of a 3D model to a range image of the scene. We developed a new error function to compare the input range image to pre-computed range maps of the 3D model. We use the tremendous data- parallel processing performance of modern graphics hardware to evaluate and minimize the error function on many range images in parallel. Our algorithm is simple and accurately estimates the pose of partially occluded objects in cluttered scenes in about one second.

The agent models and gestures have been created by a professional Japanese character designer. By adapting and extending an influential technique ("Verbs and Adverbs"), we added parameterized emotional expression and gesture interruptibility as new behaviors to increase agent believability, interactivity, and responsiveness. Motion retargeting can be achieved by direct shape deformation transfer but may be visually unrealistic and physically incorrect. The purpose of this study is to include the consideration of physical properties for more realistic target motion synthesis. After partitioning source and target objects into segments, each segment mass and center of mass (COM) position/velocity are estimated. The target animation is generated by minimizing the difference in total linear momentum between source and target. Weighting functions for addressing the importance of segment motion and constraints on unrealistic segment length/velocity are also included. The results show that target movement amplitude and velocity are generally smaller than those of the source animation and with less seemly unrealistic motion. Thus, plausible animation can be generated by the retargeting procedures proposed in this study. The same methods may be applied to a variety of different target models for realistic motion synthesis.

In this paper we introduce Simulated Reality (SR) as a new concept for the interplay between simulation, optimization and interactive visualization. We see SR as a new metaphor for the interactive visual exploration of simulation and optimization results. The vision of Simulated Reality implies interactive behavior of simulations. Fact is today that simulations might still need hours of computation time, especially in crash worthiness. This paper shows approaches to come closer to the vision of SR. Combining design of experiments methods, metamodeling, new interpolation schemes and innovative graphics methods, we enable to user to interact with simulation parameters, optimization criteria and come to a new interpolated crash result within seconds. The approaches have been successfully applied for solution of real life car design optimization problems.
