In interacting with a soft object, both visual and haptic senses play major role in providing the characteristics of the object. While visual feedback comes from the appearance of the overall shape, haptic feedback comes largely from the localized internal composition. However, it has been a common practice to represent the object with one model for both processing shape de formation and computing the feedback force, making it much challenging work to achieve real-time simulation of a soft and especially non-homogeneous object. In this paper, we claim that it may be sufficient to represent the graphical visual model as a surface model whereas it is necessary to represent the haptic model as a volumetric model. We propose, therefore, a hybrid model where volumetric haptic model and surface graphical model coexist. For constructing hybrid model, we employ S-chain model to compute the haptic behavior and mass-spring model to calculate graphic behavior. We conduct experiments with volumetric human liver model at a haptic update rate of 1000 Hz and graphic update rate of 30 Hz. The experimental results show that our proposed model satisfies the real-time performance and provides the realistic sense to be useful for a virtual reality application.

The endovascular repair of a traumatic rupture of the thoracic aorta - that would otherwise lead to the death of the patient - is performed by delivering a stent-graft into the vessel at the rupture location. The age range of the affected patients is large and the stent-graft will stay in the body for the remaining life. The technique is relatively new, and no experience with regard to long-term effects, and durability exists. To predict long-term complications, such as ruptures or destructive interactions with surrounding tissue during the life of the patient, it is important to understand the - rather intense and constant - movement of the stent- graft during the cardiac cycle. A computed tomography with heart gating (gated CT) acquires sequences that show the region of the stent-graft at different time points. We analyze the motion of stent-grafts with a model based approach. Stent-grafts are represented as sparse sets of axis points extracted from the gated CT, and motion patterns are captured by a minimum description length based group-wise registration of the stent-graft at different time points. No parameterization or a priori definition of the topology is necessary, and highly variable elasticity properties in the data volume can by accounted for by the sparse statistical model, that captures correlations and motion components of the stent-graft. We report results for deformation models and registration accuracy for 5 patients.

We present the self-paced 3-class Graz brain-computer interface (BCI) which is based on the detection of sensorimotor electroencephalogram (EEG) rhythms induced by motor imagery. Self-paced operation means that the BCI is able to determine whether the ongoing brain activity is intended as control signal (intentional control) or not (non-control state). The presented system is able to automatically reduce electrooculogram (EOG) artifacts, to detect electromyographic (EMG) activity, and uses only three bipolar EEG channels. Two applications are presented: the freeSpace virtual environment (VE) and the Brainloop interface. The freeSpace is a computer-game-like application where subjects have to navigate through the environment and collect coins by autonomously selecting navigation commands. Three subjects participated in these feedback experiments and each learned to navigate through the VE and collect coins. Two out of the three succeeded in collecting all three coins. The Brainloop interface provides an interface between the Graz-BCI and Google Earth.

How can teachers get students to explore art and art related fields and have or learn the process of critical analysis and critical thinking in an educational curriculum that is heavy on the engineering and technology courses? Inevitably these students are asked to be artistic and to have knowledge of disciplines outside computergraphicstechnology. Indeed, they will seek employment in the entertainment industry, where they will work on films that have an artistic, literary and historical component. Additionally, how can we expose them to the working methodologies of group or collaborative learning while still advancing their knowledge base in computergraphics-specifically three dimensional modeling, texturing and lighting. This paper outlines and describes one approach that is immersive in the outside disciplines while still utilizing the tools of computergraphics to solve the visual problem. It also contains the collaborative learning elements and critical thinking components that students need to be successful in these endeavors.

Course consistency in the form of learning objectives and outcomes is an important assessment measure. Many problems can arise in assessment while keeping up with the technology, to the point where some assessment measures may become obsolete. In response to that, this paper will explore a number of questions that deal with the issue of rapidly changing technology within the learning situation along with assessing a program in this type of environment. Additionally, this paper will address a number of questions including: How does an educator keep up, and what is the significance in teaching the "old" technology verses the "new" or "upgraded" technology? How do educators assess student success? How does an educator assess the technology skill level and set a base for continued course assessment throughout a degree program? This paper will also explore the possibilities of setting up accreditation options to prepare for future computergraphics accreditation.
