Both approaches have their distinct advantages, and both build on a common set of basic techniques based on graph data structures. In this paper we present a novel system for segmentation refine-ment, which allows for interactive correction of surface models generated from imperfect automatic segmentations of arbitrary volumetric data. The proposed approach is based on a deformable surface model allowing interactive manipulation with a hybrid user interface consisting of an immersive stereoscopic display and a Tablet PC. The user interface features visualization methods and manipulation tools specifically designed for quick inspection and correction of typical defects resulting from automated segmentation of medical datasets. A number of experiments show that typical segmentation problems can be fixed within a few minutes using the system, while maintaining real-time responsiveness of the system. Copyright 2006 ACM.

CIE XYZ colour space is sometimes recommended in literature for photorealistic rendering computations because it allows one to simultaneously handle all perceivable colours at much lower computational cost than by using spectral rendering. In this paper we show that XYZ is actually a poor choice for such computations, since it is not closed under the componentwise multiplication which is a typical operation in a rendering system. We also discuss why this rather obvious fact has not received much attention yet, and give pointers to alternative solutions.

Interfaces for users on the web are usually created using standard HTML-technologies. Although dynamic text-based features are widely available on the web (e.g. by using DHTML) there are still some limitations in the user experience when using dynamic graphical elements. In this article we focus on a GUI-prototype using Scalable Vector graphics (SVG) as an interface to an existing Digital Library. First we describe the current situation of the running system and explain some of the limitations in the GUI. Thereafter we compare the document-format with other electronic formats. An overview of the prototype and a description of the used framework will be given in the main section of this article. Finally we are going to show an improved version of a search task using an SVG-category viewer. The currently supported SVG-recommendation (SVG 1.1) by the SVG-plugins have some limitations. The upcoming release will solve some of the problems and introduce new features related to data-handling and database access. An outlook of these new features and lessons learned in implementing the prototype will close the article.

By stimulating the motor nerves, muscular contractions can be triggered that can be matched to a haptic event. Reflecting an initial user test, we will explain how this process can be realized, by investigating the physiological processes involved. Collagen fibers are prominent constituents of many soft tissues. The fibers are able to carry load along their fiber axis, and, therefore, their structural arrangement renders the mechanical behavior of biological tissue anisotropic. In some tissues, e.g., blood vessels, tendons and ligaments, the fibers form fiber bundles. Structure-based biomechanical models of soft tissues strongly rely on a clear understanding of the underlying collagen fiber bundle structure and require precise quantitative structural information. The paper presents a novel fiber bundle model that satisfactorily explains the observed bundle structure and reveals meaningful parameters for bundle characterization. The model is capable of describing a wide variety of natural bundle structures. It is shown that the identified bundle parameters can be extracted from real histological images using computer vision algorithms. The generative nature of the model allows the creation of artificial fiber bundle images with characteristics very similar to real images.
