As has been shown by significant research over the past several decades, there is much that can be done to encourage student development in visualization ability. This capability to visualize, or "see" in three-dimensional space in the mind's eye, is crucial in many areas of computergraphics, engineering design, and manufacturing technology, and is spreading across traditional boundaries in many industries. In conventional engineering graphics instruction, having students alternate between pictorial representations and orthographic views of an object or assembly is one method used to exercise and develop 2D/3D visualization skills. The success of this method of instruction is highly dependent on individual student ability, and often requires a significant amount of instructor mentoring. The authors have written several papers on the rationale for, and the development of, a computer-based tutorial that focuses on enhancing student capabilities with multiview orthographic drawing. An important recent enhancement to the tutorial is the incorporation of an interactive Web-based drawing application that provides real-time assessment and performance feedback. Preliminary analysis of early versions of the application has been both encouraging and informative. The authors anticipate that continued testing and development of the application will provide a novel and effective educational aid. This paper discusses the technology and methodology used to create the tutorial and drawing application, as well as foundational and pedagogical aspects of graphics instruction and computer-based educational technology. The results of on-going quantitative and qualitative assessment are also reviewed, along with plans for future development.

We present an efficient algorithm for visual modeling table mountains (mesas) using erosion simulation. The method uses techniques from computergraphics to closely model the phenomenon, without relying on physically correct modeling. Our main goal is to devise an efficient algorithm that is geologically inspired and simulates visually plausible results in a reasonable time with certain user control over the process. The algorithm models a terrain as composed of two different materials, the hard one (rock) and the soft one (sand). The hard material is exposed to moisture and thermal changes that erode the side parts (the rimrock) of the table mountain. The eroded parts fall and change into the soft material. This material is subject of a different type of erosion. The soft material moves as sand or gravel with high inner friction. It moves slowly trying to reach an equilibrium and forms characteristic hillside of table mountains. We simulate this slow motion of soft material by a diffusion algorithm. The algorithm presented here achieves visually plausible results in reasonable time. The results are in tune with mountains observed in nature, and are comparable to the existing terrain modeling and displaying techniques.

Increasingly, companies and corporations are seeking to diversify those areas of their workforce that are predominantly male. Many of those positions are highly technical. However, despite abundant career opportunities, women are not preparing themselves for technology-related careers that would fill these positions. In 2002, a partnership was developed between the School of technology at Purdue University and John Deere to create a retention vehicle for beginning women students in the School. In this paper, we will present an overview of the freshman seminar Women in technology: Exploring the Possibilities, developed as the result of this partnership. We will discuss the results of a survey of students' attitudes and beliefs about women in technology-related disciplines, administered before and after each semester of the seminar;compare the preliminary results from those surveys to the same survey administered to a control group;and offer recommendations for strategies aimed at retaining women students in technology and engineering.
This paper proposes a method to auto-calibrate a static camera in man-made worlds. The calibration is done with vanishing points which are estimated with line segments. Instead of a single image, the method uses const...
