Contrast in image processing is usually defined as a ratio between the darkest and the brightest spots of an image. In this paper we introduce a different contrast definition. The newly introduced Global Contrast Fact...

It is generally accepted that the ability to visualize is an important tool for engineers and technologists especially in Engineering graphics. Enhancing the spatial visualization abilities of engineering students has long been a focus of engineering graphics educators. A variety of tests and procedures to determine learning styles have been developed and used over the years. As professors, we tend to teach the way we learn, whether that is good for the students or not. Understanding our own learning style as well as the styles of our students might help us become better communicators. There are a wide variety of tests and indicators for determining learning styles. Kolb (2001), Herrmann (1995), and others have similar but different theories on learning styles. Most of us are familiar with the Myers Briggs Type Indicator tests (MBTI) given to high school students to help them make educated decisions about their career choices. A search on the web will turn up numerous sites and on-line tests. Traditionally, instructors have encouraged to present information in several different modes to engage students with a variety of learning styles. This paper presents the results of a pilot study that examined the learning styles of graphic educators and graphics students using the Style Delineator by Anthony Gregore (2000). The Style Delineator is a self-assessment instrument for adults and can be used as a tool for understanding learning as well as teaching styles. For the purpose of this pilot study, the student participants were limited to undergraduates majoring in computergraphicstechnology. The faculty participants were university graphics instructors with a variety of academic and industrial backgrounds.

This paper presents a new method for performance evaluation of local detectors on non-planar scenes. The framework extends the detector evaluation of Mikolajczyk and Schmid to non-planar scenes. The basic idea for establishing ground truth information on 3D scenes is the use of the trifocal tensor and the point transfer property. The repeatability and matching scores (using the SIFT descriptor) for the currently most popular local detectors are compared for increasing viewpoint change. In addition, detector combinations are evaluated by estimating the diversity of regions produced by the different detectors. The experiments reveal that the results differ from that of previous evaluations on planar scenes, especially that repeatability and matching scores will be much lower in real applications as suggested by previous evaluations.

Within the large spectrum of possible VR application areas, automotive applications were among the first to appear, and are among the most demanding. technology has not been sufficiently sophisticated for many tasks. The troubling thought is that we are happy to push the technology envelope, but don't really know how useful this technology is, or can be. Could I do my job even if I had a real-time, ortho-stereoscopic, head-tracked, multi-viewer, wide-field-of-view, high-dynamic-range display with eye-limiting acuity?

In this paper we describe a rate-based OBS network architecture in which core switch nodes send explicit messages to edge nodes requesting them to reduce their transmission rate on congested links. Within this framework, we introduce a new contention avoidance mechanism called proportional control algorithm with explicit reduction request (PCwER). Through source rate control, PCwER proactively attempts to prevent the network from entering the congestion state. Basic building blocks and performance trade-offs of PCwER are the main focus of this paper. In addition, through a simple fluid model we analyze the characteristics of the algorithm. Our simulation results show that the proposed contention avoidance techniques improve the network utilization and reduce the packet loss probability.

This paper proposes a method for robustly matching active appearance models (AAMs) on images with gross disturbances (outliers). The method consists of two steps. First, an initial residual is calculated by comparing model and image appearance, and modes of the residual are analyzed. Second, all possible mode combinations are tested by evaluating an objective function. The objective function allows the selection of an outlier-free mode combination. Experiments demonstrate the ability of the robust matching method to successfully cope with outliers - compared to standard AAM matching, no degeneration of the model during matching occurs.

We present a novel on-line conservative learning framework for an object detection system. All algorithms operate in an on-line mode, in particular we also present a novel on-line AdaBoost method. The basic idea is to start with a very simple object detection system and to exploit a huge amount of unlabeled video data by being very conservative in selecting training examples. The key idea is to use reconstructive and discriminative classifiers in an iterative co-training fashion to arrive at increasingly better object detectors. We demonstrate the framework on a surveillance task where we learn person detectors that are tested on two surveillance video sequences. We start with a simple moving object classifier and proceed with incremental PCA (on shape and appearance) as a reconstructive classifier, which in turn generates a training set for a discriminative on-line AdaBoost classifier

MonkeyBridge is a collaborative Augmented Reality (AR) game employing autonomous animated agents embodied by lifelike, animated virtual characters and "smart" physical objects. The game serves as a pilot application to examine how "smart" software and hardware components capable of observing and reacting to events in the physical and virtual world can be useful in AR applications. We describe the implementation details of our test setups as well as how autonomous agents offer a rich gaming experience in AR games.

The Manufacturing Engineering Technologies and Supervision Department at Purdue University Calumet has been actively involved with course embedded assessment techniques for more than three years. The assessment project has spanned the engineering technologies programs, the computergraphicstechnology program, and the organizational leadership and supervision programs. During those three years, the faculty members have learned much about structuring course-embedded assessments and using those assessments for continuous improvement in support of program goals and ABET outcomes. This paper will outline the basic premises and methods of our assessments, then compare data from traditional and online courses, and discuss how "soft" skills such as teamwork, communication and peer review, and creative problem-solving can be assessed in both traditional and online courses. Specific data from engineering technology, computergraphicstechnology, and organizational leadership and supervision will be discussed, as well as statistical data comparing results from online courses and traditional courses. In the assessment process, we found surprising results, particularly in the summative assessment process of collecting data for continuous improvement and ABET outcomes. Some possible explanations for the results will be offered.
