We present new methods which transfer the color style of a source image into an arbitrary given target image having a different 3D color distribution. The color transfer has a high importance ensuring a wide area of applications from artistic transformation of the color atmosphere of images until different scientific visualizations using special gamut mappings. Our technique use a permissive, or optionally strict, 3D histogram matching, similarly to the sampling of multivariable functions applying a sequential chain of conditional probability density functions. We work by order of hue, hue dependent lightness and from both dependent saturation histograms of source and target images, respectively. We apply different histogram transformations, like smoothing or contrast limitation, in order to avoid some unexpected high gradients and other artifacts. Furthermore, we use dominance suppression optionally, by applying sub-linear functions for the histograms in order to get well balanced color distributions, or an overall appearance reflecting the memory color distribution better. Forward and inverse operations on the corresponding cumulative histograms ensure a continuous mapping of perceptual attributes correlating to limited derivatives. Sampling an appropriate fraction of the pixels and using perceptually accurate and continuous histograms with minimal size as well as other gems make this method robust and fast. © The Eurographics Association 2005.

In this paper we consider implementing optical burst switching as an alternative approach to meet computationally intensive grid applications. Such architecture has been referred to as grid-over-OBS (GoOBS). We first present a unique layered architecture for grid-over-OBS and position OBS protocol stack within the framework of the layered grid architecture. Then, we present a generic framework for anycast routing in the context of GoOBS when requests don't have explicit addresses and they can be serviced by any appropriate grid resource. We develop several algorithms to support an casting when only a single copy of a request is transmitted. Through simulation analysis, we show the performance of our anycast algorithms and compare them with the shortest-path unicast routing in which all jobs have specific addresses. This paper describes an automatic system for 3D face modeling using frontal and profile images taken by an ordinary digital camera. The system consists of four subsystems including frontal feature detection, profile feature detection, shape deformation, and texture generation modules. The frontal and profile feature detection modules automatically extract the facial parts such as the eye, nose, mouth, and ear. The shape deformation module utilizes the detected features to deform the generic head mesh model such that the deformed model coincides with the detected features. A texture is created by combining the facial textures augmented from the input images and the synthesized texture and mapped onto the deformed generic head model. This paper provides a practical system for 3D face modeling, which is highly automated by aggregating, customizing, and optimizing a bunch of individual computer vision algorithms. The experimental results show a highly automated process of modeling, which is sufficiently robust to various imaging conditions. The whole model creation including all the optional manual corrections takes only 2-3 minutes. © 2005 Hindawi Publishing Corporation.

Change detection by background subtraction is a common approach to detect moving foreground. The resulting difference image is usually thresholded to obtain objects based on pixel connectedness and resulting blob objects are subsequently tracked. This paper proposes a detection approach not requiring the binarization of the difference image. Local density maxima in the difference image - usually representing moving objects - are outlined by a fast non-parametric mean shift clustering procedure. Object tracking is carried out by updating and propagating cluster parameters over time using the mode seeking property of the mean shift procedure. For occluding targets, a fast procedure determining the object configuration maximizing image likelihood is presented. Detection and tracking results are demonstrated for a crowded scene and evaluation of the proposed tracking framework is presented.

This paper suggests a prototype system for visualization and analysis of anatomic shape and functional features of the hippocampus. Based on the result of MR-SPECT multi-modality image registration, anatomical and functional features of hippocampus are extracted from MR and registered SPECT images, respectively. The hippocampus is visualized in 3D by applying volume rendering to hippocampus volume data extracted from the MR image with color coded by registered SPECT image. In order to offer the objective and quantitative data concerning to the anatomic shape and functional features of the hippocampus, the geometric volume and the SPECT intensity histogram of hippocampus regions are automatically measured based on the MR and the registered SPECT image, respectively. We also propose a new method for the analysis of hippocampal shape using an integrated Octree-based representation, consisting of meshes, voxels, and skeletons. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

This paper presents a prototype of a client system for Realistic Broadcasting that can receive and process immersive media. It provides a viewer which supports stereoscopic video display and haptic interaction with the displayed media. The structure of the system is introduced and each component is described. In order to show the fear sibility of Realistic Broadcasting, a home shopping channel scenario is applied to the system and its demonstration is performed in an exhibition. Ship hull form module is the main module in ship design. The problem of creating fair ship hull surface is of major importance in computer aided ship design environment. The fairness of these surfaces is generally considered a subjective notion depending on the judgment of the designers (e.g. visually pleasing, devoid of unnecessary bumps or wiggles, satisfying certain continuity requirements). One of the restriction in ship hull design is that the existing details of a ship design on paper or a ship that already been constructed physically couldn't be reconstructed accurately and concisely in a ship hull design software. This problem can take on many different characteristics, depending on the goal of the reconstruction, the origin of the offset, and tools or methods available to tackle the job. All of these must be taken into account in developing the best approach to solving the problem in the most efficient manner. In this research, the implementation of NURBS method is used because it brings the most convincing results.

Active shape models are powerful and widely used tool to interpret complex image data. By building models of shape variation they enable search algorithms to use a priori knowledge in an efficient and gainful way. However, due to the linearity of PCA, non-linearities like rotations or independently moving sub-parts in the data can deteriorate the resulting model considerably. Although non-linear extensions of active shape models have been proposed and application specific solutions have been used, they still need a certain amount of user interaction during model building. In this paper the task of building/choosing optimal models is tackled in a more generic information theoretic fashion. In particular, we propose an algorithm based on the minimum description length principle to find an optimal subdivision of the data into sub-parts, each adequate for linear modeling. This results in an overall more compact model configuration. Which in turn leads to a better model in terms of modes of variations. The proposed method is evaluated on synthetic data, medical images and hand contours.

In this paper we address the problem of data burst grooming in optical burst-switched (OBS) networks. In OBS networks IP packets with the same edge node destination are assembled into larger packets called data bursts. Depending on the core node's switching technology, data bursts are required to have a minimum length. On the other hand, each IP packet in a burst has a time delay constraint, called maximum end-to-end delay, which determines the upper time limit before which the packet must reach its destination. Thus, a data burst cannot wait indefinitely until sufficient number of IP packets are assembled and the minimum burst length requirement is met. In order to satisfy the packet maximum end-to-end delay requirement, many bursts will be timed out and released before they reach the minimum length requirement. Under such circumstances, padding overhead must be added to these short bursts, called sub-bursts. Excessive padding results in high overhead and high data burst blocking probability. One approach to minimize the amount of padding overhead, while maintaining the end-to-end delay requirement of IP packets, is to groom multiple sub-bursts together. That is, sub-bursts with different destinations are aggregated together at the edge node and transmitted as a single burst until they are separated at some downstream node. In this paper we present an edge node architecture enabling burst grooming capability. We also develop two basic grooming approaches, namely no-routing-overhead (NoRO) and minimum-total-overhead (MinTO). Through a comprehensive simulation study we show that, in general, our proposed grooming algorithms can significantly improve the performance compared to the case of no grooming. However, careful considerations must be given to network loading condition and the number of sub-bursts allowed to be groomed together. We show that although simple greedy algorithms can reduce network overhead, they may alter the traffic characteristics and increase it
