In this paper we discuss the scenario of Petroleum Engineering projects of Petrobras, a large Brazilian governmental oil & gas company. Based on this scenario, we propose a set of application requirements and system architecture to guide the construction of a Collaborative Engineering Environment (CEE) for assisting the control and execution of large and complex industrial projects in oil and gas industry. The environment is composed by the integration of three different technologies of distributed group work: Workflow Management System (WfMS), Multimedia Collaborative System (MMCS) and Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVE).

This paper presents a fast haptic rendering method providing the sense of touch from a virtual volumetric non-rigid object when a human operator interacts with the object at multiple points. Previously, we have proposed a fast volume haptic rendering method based on the shape-retaining chain linked model (or the S-chain model) that can handle the deformation of a volumetric non-rigid object and its haptic feedback in real time. One of the key differences between the S-chain model and a traditional FEM or mass-spring model is that the computation of the deformation and its reflected force is performed at a local level. When there are more than one interaction points with the object, it is necessary to consider a modeling framework that can handle human operator's all inputs together. In this paper, we propose a modeling framework in which forces generated at interaction points are vectorially summed to deal with the multiple contact points. Our experiments demonstrate that our proposed method is suitable for the real-time volume haptic rendering of a volumetric non-rigid object with multiple-contact points.

We discuss a system for the digital capture of museum artefacts which are accumulated into a multimedia repository comprising 3D models, images, video and sound clips as well as textual descriptions. A comprehensive set of metadata is recorded and stored alongside these various media with the aim of re-using and re-purposing them for multiple applications. We investigate issues relating to both internal and external interoperability to enable the creation of learning scenarios within the system itself as well as the export of primary multimedia objects into an independent, external Learning Content Management System for the creation of complex Learning Objects.

Vehicle occupants that are out-of-position can be deadly injured by the deployment of the air bag in a crash situation. In recent years many different sensors and systems have been proposed to detect the type of occupant and the position of the occupant's head. This work presents a method for classification and occupant's head detection based on passive stereo vision. The proposed system uses depth surface analysis and scene statistics together with support vector machines for classification and selection of head candidates. Evaluation of the method shows 99% correct for classification and 98% correct for head detection, using large sets of image data, and image sequences recorded in a driving vehicle.

In this paper, we address the problem of multimodal registration of coronary vessels by developing a 3D parametrical model of vessel trees from computer tomography data and registering it to angiography images during intervention. Thus, the interventionist takes profit from 3D data otherwise only available before the intervention. This facilitates orientation in ambiguous radiographs, interactive visualization of all vessel structures to estimate their mutual position and navigation within the vessel system and ultimately reduces the radiation the patient and the physicians are exposed to. The model is build by exploring the branching vessel tree starting from a single position and successively expanding through the vessels guided by a local deformable surface. The result is a tree of cylindrical segments each adapted to the vessel walls that is registered to angiography images in a fast and robust way. Validation on 8 patients confirms the robustness of our method.

In this paper, the feasibility of on-board data reduction/compression concept described in is evaluated for infrared images taken from space observatories. The method described in, which was initially designed and developed for the PACS (photodetector array camera and spectrometer) instrument, makes use of on-board integration to achieve higher compression ratio (CR) for applications with a modest telemetry rate. The evaluation of the reduction concept takes into account the visual performance (distortion) and the compression ratio. The distortion is assessed by calculating the reconstruction error using 4 metrics, namely, root mean square error (RMSE), signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR), peak-signal-to-noise-ratio (PSNR) and potential information loss (PIL). A quantitative evaluation of the on-board compression concept is performed on data from the infrared camera ISOCAM (infrared space observatory camera). We conclude with a short summary.

Engineering and technology schools, departments and students are encouraged to explore a capstone design project option that possesses significant, far-reaching implications for international humanitarian application. An Indianapolis, Indiana-based non-profit organization called the "Institute of Affordable Transportation (IAT)" engages young engineering and technology talent through service-based capstone projects to design and develop a class of transportation known as a Basic Utility Vehicle (BUY). The IAT's mission is to improve living standards and enable economic growth in the Third World by creating a simple vehicte that can be assembled almost anywhere, by almost anyone. To propagate this initiative, the IAT hosts an annual collegiate BUY competition that tests student-designed prototype BUV's. Ultimately, the student efforts from these competitions will help provide mobility, freedom and economic hope to people in rural areas of devebping countries. This paper introduces the organization that is the genesis of this initiative, gives an overview of the first two IAT collegiate competitions (including examples of student-designed and other vehicles), reflects on the academic benefits to participating students and faculty and culminates with an invitation to academic institutions to become involved in this life-changing initiative.
