For the geometric alignment of image data we propose spline-based schemes utilizing anatomical point landmarks. We have developed three different types of elastic registration approaches which have different properties and thus differ w.r.t. their suitability for certain registration applications. All approaches are both computationally efficient and can be applied for multimodal images. Our approaches have been successfully applied for the registration of 2D and 3D tomographic images of the human brain.

Ideally, freshman level students entering technology and engineering programs should possess an innate or intuitive understanding of the relationship between interacting physical objects and the mathematical and graphical fundamentals that describe that interaction. Developing and refining an understanding of that relationship is an important foundational preparation for students preparing for occupations in these fields. Historically, the development of that process has been accomplished predominantly through numerical mathematical means that often necessitate presenting important principles to students as numerical or nonvisual abstractions. This work considers the problem of metamorphosis interpolation between two freeform planar curves. Given two planar parametric curves, the curvature signature of the two curves is linearly blended, yielding a gradual change that is not only smooth but also employs intrinsic curvature shape properties, and hence is highly appealing. In order to be able to employ this curvature blending, we present a constructive scheme to derive curvature signatures of parameter curves. Additionally, we propose a scheme to reconstruct a curve from its curvature signature.

This paper presents a framework for handling and on-the-fly generation of levels of detail. The application directly controls the trade-off between the amount of resources to be used and the accuracy of the final images. The basis for this choice is an accuracy curve which explicates the trade-off. This curve is calculated and updated hierarchically, which makes it especially suited for use with a scene graph. Integration of the framework with VRML is described. Measurements on our prototype implementation show that target resource loads and accuracies can adequately be reached. Copyright 2002 ACM.
