With the Styria Flyover one can virtually fly over Styria, a province of Austria. The countryside is characterized by a mixture of rather flat regions in the south east and mountains up to 3000 m in the north west. The digital model covers Styria and parts of its adjoining provinces (30,000 km/sup 2/); it is based on a DTM consisting of more than 23 million triangles and on 50 Mbyte texture data (satellite images). The framework combines an R-tree data structure with efficient LOD management (automatic mesh refinement), progressive rendering and dynamic performance adjustment. On a SGI O2 it delivers more than 8 frames per second. The authors' approach demonstrates that efficient algorithms make a fast 3D GIS user interface possible without spending a fortune on hardware. The paper focuses on techniques and data structures to maximize the performance of visualization.

Simulation and visualization of NC milling processes has become an important step in computer aided manufacturing. The usage of stock materials with specific locally varying properties (such as density, accuracy, color, etc.) is becoming more important with new technologies emerging in the material industry. The authors' approach, using volumetric representation, has been adapted to these needs and copes with inhomogeneous material properties. Taking color as one possible material property, their approach enables the visualization of milled wood or compound materials. Furthermore, their approach has been developed with the usage of low-end graphics hardware in mind. The algorithms have been optimized to ensure interactive update rates even on standard personal computers without hardware graphics acceleration.

The authors show in an experiment on three overlapping Magellan images of the Venusian surface how the special consideration of a possible layover situation can improve the stereo-derived terrain model. The implemented semi-automated procedures reconstruct terrain slopes and at the same time distinguish between foreshortening and layover. Simulation is used as a tool for quality control and to merge information from opposite-side SAR images.

The Digital Interactive Venus Atlas (DIVA) is a remote sensing information system for a catalog of SAR radar image data from the Magellan mission to Venus (1990-1994). The system consists of a Java based user interface accessible via the WWW, an image map pyramid covering almost the entire Venusian surface, a remote interface to a data archive and a metadata catalog to retrieve quicklooks and information about the data sets available. DIVA makes intensive use of Java's multi-threading capabilities to avoid the performance penalties of traditional WWW-based interfaces. Its state of the art user interface consists of a scalable, clickable image map for interactive formulation of spatial queries. It provides fast and easy access to the image catalog in a platform-independent way.

The paper presents an improved hybrid genetic algorithm (GA) for solving the multiconstrained 0-1 knapsack problem (MKP). Based on the solution of the LP relaxed MKP, an efficient pre-optimization of the initial population is suggested. Furthermore, the GA uses sophisticated repair and focal improvement operators which are applied to each newly generated solution. Care has been taken to define these new operators in a way avoiding problems with the loss of population diversity. The new algorithm has been empirically compared to other previous approaches by using a standard set of "large sized" test data. Results show that most of the time the new GA converges much faster to better solutions, in particular for large problems.

The rapid grow of both, the size of remote sensing data and the number of users in this field requires systems which are easy to use, platform independent and mighty. Currently, many users are not able to process or even access data the way they would like to. Utilizing upcoming technologies like WWW, Java and CORBA, we propose a distributed system that connects users, data bases and method bases. Latter ones help users to find an appropriate sequence of methods for processing, and incorporating a broker they schedule execution onto fast remote processing units (backends). We discuss design considerations concerning the interaction of the back-end with other system components, and strategies for effective job distribution.

Integrating virtual human animation in networked virtual environments (NVEs) has the potential to create severe network load issues. In NVEs, users are represented by their virtual embodiments. The articulated structure of these embodiments introduces a new complexity in the communication, representation and streaming of animations. This might create a significant overhead, especially as the number of participants in the simulation increases. In this paper, we present problems and solutions to efficiently transmit virtual human data over the network.
