Lay people’s terms of health concepts are widely found in social medial data. Understanding their terms can help learn what they have experienced. The existing consumer health vocabularies do not include many health concept phrases found in social media. Recent advancement of pretrained large language models has demonstrated their state-of-the-art performance in a number of natural language processing tasks. In this work, we investigated 3 commonly used pretrained large language models on their ability of understanding consumer health concepts. The results on a corpus of 156 phrases related to 3 common COVID-19 symptoms showed that these pretrained general domain language models generated encouraging outputs, indicating that they may be a promising alternative to the current consumer health vocabularies.

We present an automated and efficient approach for retrieving high-quality CAD models of objects and their poses in a scene captured by a moving RGB-D camera. We first investigate various objective functions to measure similarity between a candidate CAD object model and the available data, and the best objective function appears to be a ”render-and-compare” method comparing depth and mask rendering. We thus introduce a fast-search method that approximates an exhaustive search based on this objective function for simultaneously retrieving the object category, a CAD model, and the pose of an object given an approximate 3D bounding box. This method involves a search tree that organizes the CAD models and object properties including object category and pose for fast retrieval and an algorithm inspired by Monte Carlo Tree Search, that efficiently searches this tree. We show that this method retrieves CAD models that fit the real objects very well, with a speed-up factor of 10$\times$ to 120$\times$ compared to exhaustive search. We used our method to automatically retrieve CAD models for objects in the ScanNet dataset; our annotations are available at https://***/stefanainetter/SCANnotateDataset.

This paper presents a novel approach for head tracking in augmented reality (AR) flight simulators using an adaptive fusion of Kalman and particle filters. This fusion dynamically balances the strengths of both algorithms, leveraging Kalman filters for computational efficiency and particle filters for handling non-linearities based on real-time factors such as sensor noise and head movement patterns. Our method demonstrates superior tracking precision and reduced latency, making it particularly effective for immersive pilot training in AR-based flight simulations. While focused on flight simulation, our approach holds high potential for broader applications in other AR and virtual reality (VR) environments where precise, real-time head tracking is crucial. These results provide actionable design guidance for developers optimizing tracking systems in environments that require fast response times and high accuracy. Future extensions of this research could explore the generalization of our approach across diverse AR applications, including human-computer interaction (HCI), medical simulations, and gaming. © 1968-2012 IEEE.

This paper introduces the design of a Spiking Convolutional Vision Transformer (SCvT) by using the biological-inspired learning rules including spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) and reward–modulated STDP (R-STDP) for a classification task. We describe the structure of the SCvT simulated with deep spiking convolutional neural networks (DSCNN) and give a detailed description of the classification strategy.

We explored how study participants interacted with virtual characters in a virtual reality study. Specifically, we developed a 3 (proximity: close vs. middle vs. far) $\times 2$ (gesture: passive vs. active) experimental design (N = 26) to understand how combinations of proximity between two virtual characters and gestures assigned to them influence study participants’ self-reported ratings (co-presence, attentional allocation, behavioral interdependence, emotional reactivity, and perceived politeness). We also examined their avoidance movements (duration, trajectory length, and speed) and their avoidance decisions (passing through/around and minimum distance side). We collected both survey responses and our participants’ trajectories. Our study revealed that 1) the proximity factor impacted how our participants rated their co-presence and behavioral interdependence, as well as whether they decided to pass through or around the virtual characters, and 2) the gesture factor impacted how participants rated their behavioral interdependence, emotional reactivity, perceived politeness, and also affected their duration, trajectory length, and speed. Our research contributes to understanding personal space and social norms in virtual environments, offering valuable insights for virtual reality developers on the importance of social dynamics in designing interactions with virtual characters.

An important task in archaeological research is the comparison of painted motifs on ancient vessels and the analysis of their painting style. Ideally, the pottery objects are available as scanned 3D models, from which the painted surface can be unrolled and potential distortions minimized, so that the vase painting and its individual motifs can be directly inspected. Unfortunately, the percentage of digitally captured vessels is small compared to the large body of cataloged photographs. In this paper, we present a method that creates distortion-minimized unrollings of painted pottery surfaces directly from a small set of photographs. We achieve this by exploiting prior knowledge about the data, namely that most objects exhibit rotational symmetry and that strict guidelines were followed when capturing photographs of the ancient vases. Based on the distinctly visible object silhouettes in the photographs we are able to extract proxy geometries of the objects which we encode as per-view geometric maps. By stitching the single-view data, we obtain a combined map capturing the geometry and texture of the entire painted surface. This enables us to minimize typical projective distortions by elastic relaxation. Our pipeline works entirely in 2D image space, circumventing time-consuming 3D scans and surface reconstructions of (often inaccessible) vessels. Using a combination of CPU-based image processing and GPU-based relaxation, results are produced in only a few minutes. © 2021 The Eurographics Association.

In this paper, we present a novel deep neural network architecture for joint class-agnostic object segmentation and grasp detection for robotic picking tasks using a parallel-plate gripper. We introduce depth-aware Coordinate Convolution (CoordConv), a method to increase accuracy for point proposal based object instance segmentation in complex scenes without adding any additional network parameters or computation complexity. Depth-aware CoordConv uses depth data to extract prior information about the location of an object to achieve highly accurate object instance segmentation. These resulting segmentation masks, combined with predicted grasp candidates, lead to a complete scene description for grasping using a parallel-plate gripper. We evaluate the accuracy of grasp detection and instance segmentation on challenging robotic picking datasets, namely Siléane and OCID_grasp, and show the benefit of joint grasp detection and segmentation on a real-world robotic picking task. © 2021. Hand-eye coordination is essential for everyday tasks when inter-acting with real and virtual worlds, as researchers have found it important for virtual reality training and simulation applications. However, to our know ledge, there are no findings concerning the effect of tactile interruptions in virtual reality hand-eye coordination tasks. Thus, we conducted a within-group study (N = 31) with five tactile feedback conditions (no tactile feedback, weak linear tactile feedback, strong linear tactile feedback, weak pulsive tactile feedback, and strong pulsive tactile feedback) to examine the effect of tactile interruption on hand-eye coordination task performance. We collected data logs from our virtual reality application, including total completion time, error rate, and throughput. Based on our results, we indicate that tactile interruptions significantly affect hand-eye coordination task performance. Specifically, when we exposed our participants to strong pulsive tactile feedback, they spent the most time completing the task. When we exposed them to weak linear tactile feedback, they spent less time than with strong linear and weak pulsive tactile feedback. We also found that when we exposed our participants to strong pulsive tactile feedback, they had the least throughput performance in our hand-eye coordination task. In this paper, we discuss our findings and limitations and provide de-sign considerations and future directions for virtual reality hand-eye coordination studies.

The paper deals with a fiber-optical tomographic problem showed for monitoring marine hydro-engineering constructions controlled by fiber-optical measuring networks comprising fiber-optical lines/links. The study presents the description of a packing diagram of fiber-optical measuring lines in three directions. The paper also illustrates the results of a mathematical calculation of recovery (backing up) of binary action performed by algebraic methods. Using such fiber-optical measuring lines is possible on surfaces with a complicated, arbitrary profile, whereas fiber-optical element/component base (software) allows using them for security monitoring of especially dangerous Class I and II hydro-engineering constructions. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents the development of an anthropomorphic robot designed for collaborative research alongside the Kuka LBR iiwa R820 robotic arm for the research project I-CATER. The primary objectives were designing a robust and stable robot's structure, integrating hardware using the Robot Operating System (ROS), and developing a user- friendly Human-Machine Interface. Priority was set on ensuring the structure could support two robotic arms without compromising stability or functionality. Key components include 7 Degrees of Freedom (DoF) robotic arms, Rg2 grippers, a display and a 2 DoF neck for the vision system support, resembling the human head configuration. Considerations such as size, cost, fabrication techniques, and material availability were taken into account in the structure's design. Integration into a simplified interface allows for easy manipulation without advanced programming knowledge, facilitated by the middleware ROS for modularity and future upgrades. The outcome is RAMBO - a Robotic Anthropomorphic Manipulator for Bimanual Operations - which is a valuable research platform for natural human-robot collaboration.
