ROSENBAUM, J[&lowast]Jan Rosenbaum has worked in the imaging industry for 30 years
first as a newspaper photographer and assistant professor of photography then as a camera designer and image quality specialist in the medical and computer graphics industries. He holds a B.F.A. in art from Wayne State University an M.F.A. in photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art an M.S. in imaging and photographic science from Rochester Institute of Technology and an M.S. in management of technology from Polytechnic University of New York. Until recently he was head of the optical and color science group at a division of Agfa-Gevaert.

The medical imaging industry offers an example of what can happen when an industry ignores threats from new technologies and fails to respond to a change in the paradigm upon which it is based. The lessons learned from these basic errors in management may help those in other industries that operate at technology's edge to avoid obsolescence. The company discussed is, or was, real. As of summer, 1993, the last remaining vestige of the company was sold off to a small group of employees and their backers. The number of employees, once 900, is now fewer than 100. Most of them are looking for a way to stay in business.

This paper describes the VB2 architecture for the construction of three-dimensional interactive applications. The system's state and behavior are uniformly represented as a network of interrelated objects. Dynamic components are modeled by active variables, while multi-way relafiions are modeled by hierarchical constraints. Daemons are used to sequence between system states in reaction to changes in variable values The constraint network is efficiently maintained by an incremental constraint solver based on an enhancement of SkyBlue. Multiple devices are used to interact with the synthetic world through the use of various interaction paradigms, including immersive environments with visual and audio feedback. Interaction techniques range from direct manipulation, to gestural input and threedimensional virtual tools. Adaptive pattern recognition is used to increase input device expressiveness by enhancing sensor data with classification information. Virtual tools, which are encapsulations of visual appearance and behavior, present a selective view of manipulated moclels' information and offer an interaction metaphor to contrcd it. Since virtual tools are first class objects, they can be assembled into more complex tools, much in the same way that simple tools are built on top of a modeling hierarchy. The architecture is currently being used to build a virtual reality animation system,.
We describe an algorithm for continuously producing a 3×3 rotation matrix from 9 changing input values that form an approximate rotation matrix, and we describe the implementation of that constraint in analog VLS...

Current user interface builders provide only low-level assistance, because they have knowledge of neither the application, nor the principles by which interface elements are combined effectively. We have developed a framework that unites the knowledge components essential for effective user interface presentation design. The framework consists of an application model (both a data model and a control model), a design process model that supports top-down iterative development, and graphic design knowledge that is used both to place dialog box elements such that their application dependent logical relationships are visually reinforced and to control design symmetry and balance. To demonstrate the framework's viability, we have constructed a tool based on encapsulated design knowledge that establishes high-level style preferences and provides expert assistance for the dialog box presentation design and menu structuring.
This paper presents an open testbed for controlling facial animation. The adopted controlling means can act at different levels of abstraction (specification). These means of control can be associated with different i...
