Photometric multi-view 3D geometry reconstruction and material capture are important techniques for cultural heritage digitalization. Capturing images of artifacts with high resolution and high dynamic range and the possibility to store them losslessly enables future proof application of this data. As the images tend to consume immense amounts of storage, compression is essential for long time archiving. In this paper, we present a lossless image compression approach for multi-view and material reconstruction datasets with a strong focus on data created from cultural heritage digitalization. Our approach achieves compression rates of 2:1 compared against an uncompressed representation and 1.24:1 when compared against Gzip. © 2019 Eurographics Association.

This research-to-practice work in progress paper outlines the use of evidence-based practices and learning to enhance critical thinking skills in students through data visualization. Data visualization is a multi-stage process that enables the transformation of complex data into visual representations that inform without overwhelming its audience. The purpose of this study is to investigate how data visualization learning experiences enhances students' critical thinking skills. In this paper we identify the conceptualization of critical thinking in the data visualization process. A design-based research approach is used to empirically investigate the main research question: after participating in data visualization learning experiences, in what ways do students engage in design practices that enhance development of critical thinking skills? The working hypothesis is students experience greater learning gains when instructions include design challenges integrated with the data visualization process and mapped to critical thinking that requires them to exhibit higher-order-thinking skills. The first aim of the study is to identify critical thinking skills that are evident in the data visualization process. The second aim is to identify habits of the mind competencies that are evident in the data visualization process. The implications of this work will inform the implementation of the Paul-Elder critical thinking framework into the data visualization process with the goal of building essential intellectual traits in undergraduates. In this work, the data visualization process facilitates the logical structure of connected elements of higher-order thinking that relate to one another within the theoretical frameworks of critical thinking and habits of the mind. In open pit mining it is essential for processing and production scheduling to receive fast and accurate information about the fragmentation of a muck pile after a blast. In this work, we propose a novel machine-learning method that characterizes the muck pile directly from UAV images. In contrast to state-of-the-art approaches, that require heavy user interaction, expert knowledge and careful threshold settings, our method works fully automatically. We compute segmentation masks, bounding boxes and confidence values for each individual fragment in the muck pile on multiple scales to generate a globally consistent segmentation. Additionally, we recorded lab and real-world images to generate our own dataset for training the network. Our method shows very promising quantitative and qualitative results in all our experiments. Further, the results clearly indicate that our method generalizes to previously unseen data. © Authors 2019.

We analyze the use of images from face parts to estimate soft-biometrics indicators. Partial face occlusion is common in unconstrained scenarios, and it has become mainstream during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the use of masks. Here, we apply existing pre-trained CNN architectures, proposed in the context of the ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge, to the tasks of gender, age, and ethnicity estimation. Experiments are done with 12007 images from the Labeled Faces in the Wild (LFW) database. We show that such off-the-shelf features can effectively estimate soft-biometrics indicators using only the ocular region. For completeness, we also evaluate images showing only the mouth region. In overall terms, the network providing the best accuracy only suffers accuracy drops of 2-4% when using the ocular region, in comparison to using the entire face. Our approach is also shown to outperform in several tasks two commercial off-the-shelf systems (COTS) that employ the whole face, even if we only use the eye or mouth regions.

The emergence of COVID-19 has had a global and profound impact, not only on society as a whole, but also on the lives of individuals. Various prevention measures were introduced around the world to limit the transmission of the disease, including face masks, mandates for social distancing and regular disinfection in public spaces, and the use of screening applications. These developments also triggered the need for novel and improved computer vision techniques capable of (i) providing support to the prevention measures through an automated analysis of visual data, on the one hand, and (ii) facilitating normal operation of existing vision-based services, such as biometric authentication schemes, on the other. Especially important here, are computer vision techniques that focus on the analysis of people and faces in visual data and have been affected the most by the partial occlusions introduced by the mandates for facial masks. Such computer vision based human analysis techniques include face and face-mask detection approaches, face recognition techniques, crowd counting solutions, age and expression estimation procedures, models for detecting face-hand interactions and many others, and have seen considerable attention over recent years. The goal of this survey is to provide an introduction to the problems induced by COVID-19 into such research and to present a comprehensive review of the work done in the computer vision based human analysis field. Particular attention is paid to the impact of facial masks on the performance of various methods and recent solutions to mitigate this problem. Additionally, a detailed review of existing datasets useful for the development and evaluation of methods for COVID-19 related applications is also provided. Finally, to help advance the field further, a discussion on the main open challenges and future research direction is given at the end of the survey. An Online Platform for Automatic Skull Defect Restoration and Cranial Implant Design

We introduce a fully automatic system for cranial implant design, a common task in cranioplasty operations. The system is currently integrated in Studierfenster (http://***/), an online, cloud-based medical image processing platform for medical imaging applications. Enhanced by deep learning algorithms, the system automatically restores the missing part of a skull (i.e., skull shape completion) and generates the desired implant by subtracting the defective skull from the completed skull. The generated implant can be downloaded in the STereoLithography (.stl) format directly via the browser interface of the system. The implant model can then be sent to a 3D printer for in loco implant manufacturing. Furthermore, thanks to the standard format, the user can thereafter load the model into another application for post-processing whenever necessary. Such an automatic cranial implant design system can be integrated into the clinical practice to improve the current routine for surgeries related to skull defect repair (e.g., cranioplasty). Our system, although currently intended for educational and research use only, can be seen as an application of additive manufacturing for fast, patient-specific implant design. In the fast developing countries it is hard to trace new buildings construction or old structures destruction and, as a result, to keep the up-to-date cadastre maps. Moreover, due to the complexity of urban regions or inconsistency of data used for cadastre maps extraction, the errors in form of misalignment is a common problem. In this work, we propose an end-to-end deep learning approach which is able to solve inconsistencies between the input intensity image and the available building footprints by correcting label noises and, at the same time, misalignments if needed. The obtained results demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method to even severely misaligned examples that makes it potentially suitable for real applications, like OpenStreetMap correction.

We propose an efficient method to estimate the relative pose of a multi-camera system from a minimum of two affine correspondences (ACs). Our solution is novel as it computes the 6DOF relative pose by utilizing a first-order rotation approximation. We directly derive a single polynomial based on the constraint between ACs and the generalized camera model. Then a closed-form solution is found analytically and it produces an accurate relative pose estimation efficiently. Benefiting from the low number of exploited correspondences and the speed of the solver, it speeds up robust estimators, e.g. RANSAC, significantly. The proposed method is evaluated both on synthetic data and real-world image sequences from the KITTI benchmark. It is shown that the proposed solver is superior to the state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of accuracy.

Multimodal aggregation approach for memory vision-voice indoor navigation with meta-learning

Vision and voice are two vital keys for agents’ interaction and learning. In this paper, we present a novel indoor navigation model called Memory Vision-Voice Indoor Navigation (MVV-IN), which receives voice commands and analyzes multimodal information of visual observation in order to enhance robots’ environment understanding. We make use of single RGB images taken by a first-view monocular camera. We also apply a self-attention mechanism to keep the agent focusing on key areas. Memory is important for the agent to avoid repeating certain tasks unnecessarily and in order for it to adapt adequately to new scenes, therefore, we make use of meta-learning. We have experimented with various functional features extracted from visual observation. Comparative experiments prove that our methods outperform state-of-the-art baselines.
