The aim of our research is to build an empirical indicator of cinematic immersion based on ocular data. We study immersion as a gradual and adaptive process of corporal involvement in the cinematic experience. To study its temporal evolution, we analyze correlations between the film and the ocular response, in its attentional aspects (what do we see?) and pupillary aspects (how do we react?). To understand in what ways post-production can favor immersion, we are interested in studying the pupil reactivity to visual attributes of the film: the visual abstraction of a non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) post-production and the optical hyperrealism of stereoscopy. We expect that our results could be useful for conceiving new NPR tools for 3D films and innovative post-production strategies for virtual reality.

Iso-level tool path planning for free-form surfaces

The aim of tool path planning is to maximize the efficiency against some given precision criteria. In practice, scallop height should be kept constant to avoid unnecessary cutting, while the tool path should be smooth enough to maintain a high feed rate. However, iso-scallop and smoothness often conflict with each other. Existing methods smooth iso-scallop paths one-by-one, which makes the final tool path far from being globally optimal. This paper proposes a new framework for tool path optimization. It views a family of iso-level curves of a scalar function defined over the surface as tool path so that desired tool path can be generated by finding the function that minimizes certain energy functional and different objectives can be considered simultaneously. We use the framework to plan globally optimal tool path with respect to iso-scallop and smoothness. The energy functionals for planning iso-scallop, smoothness, and optimal tool path are respectively derived, and the path topology is studied too. Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) group studies often require the comparison of two groups of 3D diffusion tensor fields. The total number of datasets involved in the study and the multivariate nature of diffusion tensors together make this a challenging process. The traditional approach is to reduce the six-dimensional diffusion tensor to some scalar quantities, which can be analyzed with univariate statistical methods, and visualized with standard techniques such as slice views. However, this provides merely part of the whole story due to information reduction. If to take the full tensor information into account, only few methods are available, and they focus on the analysis of a single group, rather than the comparison of two groups. Simultaneously comparing two groups of diffusion tensor fields by simple juxtaposition or superposition is rather impractical. In this work, we extend previous work by Zhang et al. [ZCH∗17] to visually compare two groups of diffusion tensor fields. To deal with the wealth of information, the comparison is carried out at multiple levels of detail. In the 3D spatial domain, we propose a details-on-demand glyph representation to support the visual comparison of the tensor ensemble summary information in a progressive manner. The spatial view guides analysts to select voxels of interest. Then at the detail level, the respective original tensor ensembles are compared in terms of tensor intrinsic properties, with special care taken to reduce visual clutter. We demonstrate the usefulness of our visual analysis system by comparing a control group and an HIV positive patient group. © 2017 The Eurographics Association.

Visual conventions are perceptually efficient graphic agreements with common-sense like referents and are commonly used in what we interact with in daily life. It becomes a studying-worthy issue on whether such conventions can enhance performances and reduce cognitive load when we perceive and reason about new knowledge. Furthermore, whether the visual conventions can affect experts, who have prior knowledge and design experience about different visual encoding principles the same degree as novice who have no background knowledge in this area, is another research focus in this study. Our research is carried out according to action features when we read visualizations. Four task features are extracted, based on which behavioral and eye-tracking measurement were conducted, that is data localization, simple and complex data comparison, and knowledge inference. Both expert and novice participants were enrolled in our experiment. The result indicates that conventional elements in visualizations can hugely improve performances in more complex tasks involving higher-level cognition, like making comparisons and reasoning about new knowledge. The performance improvement can be seen from shorter response time on achieving conclusions and higher accuracy rates. Meanwhile, cognitive load, which can be measured from shorter total fixation duration and fewer fixation counts in AOIs, is reduced through applying visually conventional features. No statistically significant difference is found in comparing perceptual and inferential outputs of expert and novice group. We draw conclusions that visual conventions in visualizations can better performance in relatively complex activities, and it can be equally perceived and acquired regardless of the user’s knowledge background is. What we conclude in this study can be extended to areas of dynamic data visualization and layout design in the digital interface domain. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

A research team comprised of students and faculty from Central Connecticut State University's (CCSU) School of Engineering, Science, and technology has begun the design, production, and testing of a full-scale helicopter flight simulator with a moving platform. This paper presents the redesign of the control electronics for the platform. The hardware design includes a high-power circuit and a low-power microcontroller board. Both boards respond to the commands sent by flight simulator software X-plane ® to simulate helicopter flight. The purposes for conducting this research include: i) to build a fully functional flight simulator that can be used as a test bed for students research projects;ii) to encourage students and faculty members to use a clear design process in the design of hardware and software components to build a cost-effective flight simulator;iii) to provide students with hands-on experience on how to design and y a helicopter. CCSU students have built all of the mechanical systems. The basic design weflight for the simulator is 300 lbs force applied to the pilot seat. The structures are designed to have enough strength to sustain a maximum of 3g and a minimum -1g flight conditions. There are three actuators in place that can be used to rotate the platform in the pitching, rolling, and yawing directions. The electrical control system was redesigned, fabricated, and assembled by CCSU students. 80% of the sensors and actuators that comprise the simulator are now interfaced by CCSU student designed electronics. The electrical systems consist of a microcontroller board, three high-power H-bridge circuits, AC/DC power supplies, and three actuators. © 2017 by David J. Architectural models have always played an important role in computer graphics, virtual environments, and urban planning; due to the size, detail and complexity of such models. Creating detailed and realistic buildings needs time and extensive coding as well as significant domain expertise. Observing the content creation problem and the challenges of procedural modeling, we identified and developed a generalized proceduralization framework, that converts existing 3D urban models into an easy to manipulate procedural form. Our proceduralization framework for urban spaces allows re-use of existing models in various formats by first conducting shape processing methods to find and exploit the repetitions and similarities to reveal the hidden high-level structural information, and then by using grammar discovery methods on those components to extract a representative grammar of the model. Additionally, we have proposed applications of such procedural representations, including completion of point cloud models and structure-aware synthesis tools for procedural editing.

roaming splices several photographs taken by the camera into a panoramic image, and then uses computer graphics and image technology to construct panoramic space for the panoramic image. Image stitching will directly affect the user's roaming experience, but some panoramic images will have obvious color seams after stitching. TRIZ is a knowledge-based, human-oriented inventive problem solving systematic method. Based on TRIZ innovation method, this paper describes, analyses, resolves and evaluates the final problem plan. By using TRIZ innovation method, we can break through the thinking barrier, break the thinking stereotype, and analyze the problem with new vision, and carry out logical and non-logical systematic thinking. The problem of stitching cracks in the process of 3D panorama stitching is solved thoroughly and effectively. Finally, according to the law of technological evolution, the future development trend is predicted, and competitive and innovative products are developed.

It is shown that the construction of buildings and structures requires concrete with universal characteristics, primarily with compressive strength in the range of 35-200 (MPa) with high tensile strength, crack resistance and durability. Strength and elastic-plastic and other properties of concretes and other cement composites are regulated by creating their various formulations. In this regard, it is important to conduct comprehensive studies of the properties of composites in relation to their compositions. Cement composites of various compounding compositions, including fillers, plasticizers, pigments, and biocidal preparations, are considered. Attention is also paid to the technological aspects of preparing mixtures and manufacturing products, namely, the influence of activated water on the properties of concretes of mixing and hardening conditions. Indicators of strength, modulus of elasticity, and brittleness were obtained for compositions that differed in the type of plasticizer ('Melflux 1641 F', 'Melflux 5581 F', 'Fortrace–strong', 'Hidetal-P-5', 'Hidetal GP-9' gamma 'A'), a biocidal preparation (Teflex Antimould, Teflex Disinfectant, Teflex for Industrial sights), a pigment (iron oxide red, iron oxide yellow, green glauconito-vogo, meerkat iron). The influence on the properties of powder – activated concretes, rheologically active (rock flour), reactively active (micro - silica), fillers, as well as quartz sand fractions 0, 16 – 0.63 and 0.63-5.0 mm. The results of research showed an increase in the strength of concrete when using plasticizer 'Melflux 1641F' and activated mixing water in the technology of their preparation. To increase the strength and modulus of elasticity led to the introduction of rock flour and silica. The introduction of plasticizers led to a decrease in the elastic modulus, and the use of activated closing water does not affect this indicator. This paper explores multimedia principles for a visuohaptic simulation-based approach to improve students' understanding of electricity and magnetism concepts. The study implemented different multimedia principles for incorporating visuohaptic simulations for learning guided by Multimedia Learning Theory. This study compared the use of visuohaptic simulations to a visual-only simulation and to instructional multimedia-only materials. The results indicated that students in the visuohaptic simulation group out-performed students in the visual-only simulation group and the instructional multimedia-only group;although not significantly.
