This paper shows the early research findings of utilizing a virtual reality environment as an educational tool for the operation of a computerized numerical control (CNC) milling machine. Based off of a previous work, the Advanced Virtual Machining Lab (AVML), this project features a virtual environment in which a virtual CNC machine is fully operable, designed to allow STEM students and training professionals to learn the use of the CNC machine without the need to be in a physical lab. Users operate in the virtual environment using an immersive virtual reality headset (i.e. Oculus Rift) and standard input devices (i.e. mouse and keyboard), both of which combined make for easy movement and realistic visuals. On-screen tutorials allow users to learn about what they need to do to operate the machine without the need for outside instruction. While designing and perfecting this environment has been the primary focus of this project thus far, the research goal is to test the ease of use and the pedagogical effectiveness of the immersive technology as it relates to education in STEM fields. Initial usability studies for this environment featured students from the graduate level CAD/CAM-Theory and Advanced Applications (ME 54600) course at IUPUI. Results from the study were tabulated with a survey using a four-point Likert scale and several open-ended questions. Findings from the survey indicate that the majority of users found the environment realistic and easy to navigate, in addition to finding the immersive technology to be beneficial. Many also indicated that they felt comfortable navigating the environment without the need for additional assistance from the survey proctors. Full details on the first usability study, including data and discussion, can be found in this paper. The general consensus from the study was that, while some features needed refinement, the immersive environment helped them learn about the operation of a CNC machine. Additional usability studies

The current article describes the methods of producing titanium dioxide, or titania, which is used in various branches of the industry, including construction as a basis for producing white pigments. The base pigment grades of titania with their qualitative characteristics are listed, the modifying agents, applied in producing pigment grades, are presented, the several technologies of producing titania are mentioned. To obtain titania with different characteristics, various methods of treatment, viz. chemical or heat treatment, are used. To raise the material index of raw materials, used for producing titania and, simultaneously, to lower the obtaining of waste materials, several methods of obtaining titania from titanium slags and waste catalysts are offered. When applying the offered technologies, the range of the usage of titania will be expanded, and the efficiency of using raw materials will be increased.

The current article describes green pigments' manufacturing and application problems. Verditer green, or green pigment, is a group or chemical compounds used in various branches of industry, especially in manufacturing paints used for decoration and restoration of engineering constructions and other buildings. The properties and methods of obtaining verditer green from industrial waste are presented with the properties of viridian and cobalt green taken as the examples of green pigments. The technology of obtaining chromium oxide III, chromium hydroxide III, cobalt green including the required equipment, is given with the focus on the calcination process, the chemical reactions are performed both in description and chemical formulae, the different methods of obtaining the pigments, depending on the demanded pigment's colour, are offered, and the technical and chemical requirements for the raw material and the pigments' compound are listed.
The world is becoming more complex and problem solving often requires teams of experts to work together at the same or from different locations. To support this there is a need for collaborative tools, and a variety o...

The purpose of this paper was to describe the 3 D nano-scaled surface topography of the aluminum nitride on sapphire. The structures were prepared by magnetron sputtering with heating of the sapphire substrate. The dependence of the layers topography on the substrate temperature was presented. Surface appearance was studied by atomic force microscopy(AFM). The quantitative topography data from AFM were used for surface characterization by fractal analysis and statistical parameters. The results of fractal analysis show the correlation of fractal dimension and statistical characteristics of surface topography. The data may contribute to manufacture of AlN thin films with desired surface characteristics.
