Many engineering colleges have been facing the retention problem in engineering programs due to difficulties and lack of knowledge about what really means being an engineer. It is mainly due to the fact that the first 3 years are particularly intense and hard. A possible way to overcome this period is to implement a new kind of course more attractive and dynamic, which is the idea of COPEC's engineering education research team, to embed a course with a more interesting activity for students in the first year. It is a short-term workshop in order to show the students the possibilities of performing as engineers in a global environment - a project developed for a private university in order to augment the retention rate in their engineering courses.

In this paper we present an autonomous system for acquiring close-range high-resolution images that maximize the quality of a later-on 3D reconstruction with respect to coverage, ground resolution and 3D uncertainty. In contrast to previous work, our system uses the already acquired images to predict the confidence in the output of a dense multi-view stereo approach without executing it. This confidence encodes the likelihood of a successful reconstruction with respect to the observed scene and potential camera constellations. Our prediction module runs in real-time and can be trained without any externally recorded ground truth. We use the confidence prediction for on-site quality assurance and for planning further views that are tailored for a specific multi-view stereo approach with respect to the given scene. We demonstrate the capabilities of our approach with an autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in a challenging outdoor scenario.

Demosaicing is an important first step for color image acquisition. For practical reasons, demosaicing algorithms have to be both efficient and yield high quality results in the presence of noise. The demosaicing problem poses several challenges, e.g. zippering and false color artifacts as well as edge blur. In this work, we introduce a novel learning based method that can overcome these challenges. We formulate demosaicing as an image restoration problem and propose to learn efficient regularization inspired by a variational energy minimization framework that can be trained for different sensor layouts. Our algorithm performs joint demosaicing and denoising in close relation to the real physical mosaicing process on a camera sensor. This is achieved by learning a sequence of energy minimization problems composed of a set of RGB filters and corresponding activation functions. We evaluate our algorithm on the Microsoft Demosaicing data set in terms of peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and structured similarity index (SSIM). Our algorithm is highly efficient both in image quality and run time. We achieve an improvement of up to 2.6 dB over recent state-of-the-art algorithms.

Learned confidence measures gain increasing importance for outlier removal and quality improvement in stereo vision. However, acquiring the necessary training data is typically a tedious and time consuming task that involves manual interaction, active sensing devices and/or synthetic scenes. To overcome this problem, we propose a new, flexible, and scalable way for generating training data that only requires a set of stereo images as input. The key idea of our approach is to use different view points for reasoning about contradictions and consistencies between multiple depth maps generated with the same stereo algorithm. This enables us to generate a huge amount of training data in a fully automated manner. Among other experiments, we demonstrate the potential of our approach by boosting the performance of three learned confidence measures on the KITTI2012 dataset by simply training them on a vast amount of automatically generated training data rather than a limited amount of laser ground truth data.

In this paper, we present a method for regularizing noisy 3D reconstructions, which is especially well suited for scenes containing planar structures like buildings. At horizontal structures, the input model is divided into slices and for each slice, an inside/outside labeling is computed. With the outlines of each slice labeling, we create an irregularly shaped volumetric cell decomposition of the whole scene. Then, an optimized inside/outside labeling of these cells is computed by solving an energy minimization problem. For the cell labeling optimization we introduce a novel smoothness term, where lines in the images are used to improve the regularization result. We show that our approach can take arbitrary dense meshed point clouds as input and delivers well regularized building models, which can be textured afterwards.
