The aim of this paper is to evaluate the cosine-sine (CS) decomposition as a means for computing the 8-point Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). By iteratively decomposing matrices after reordering their columns or rows, novel factorizations of the DCT matrix have been obtained that describe interesting algorithms for computing the transform. Some of them are only characterized by regular, symmetric data-flows, whereas others require a few computations. This suggests that our method can be used to search for innovative algorithms for other block transforms and to optimize hardware implementations.

The 2015 VAST mini challenge conjured up an amusement park - DinoFun World, which owns hundreds of hectares and hosts thousands of visitors every day. With access to movement tracking information of visitors, the task of mini challenge 1 was to identify patterns of attendance and park's activities. Understanding visitor groups and monitoring visitors' activities are vitally important for mangers to provide exceptional service and handle unexpected situations. We propose a novel method for establishing correspondences on deformable objects for single-target object tracking. The key ingredient is a dissimilarity measure between correspondences that takes into account their geometric compatibility, allowing us to separate inlier correspondences from outliers. We employ both static correspondences from the initial appearance of the object as well as adaptive correspondences from the previous frame to address the stability-plasticity dilemma. The geometric dissimilarity measure enables us to also disambiguate keypoints that are difficult to match. Based on these ideas we build a keypoint-based tracker that outputs rotated bounding boxes. We demonstrate in a rigorous empirical analysis that this tracker outperforms the state of the art on a dataset of 77 sequences.

We propose an approach to detect flying objects such as UAVs and aircrafts when they occupy a small portion of the field of view, possibly moving against complex backgrounds, and are filmed by a camera that itself moves. Solving such a difficult problem requires combining both appearance and motion cues. To this end we propose a regression-based approach to motion stabilization of local image patches that allows us to achieve effective classification on spatio-temporal image cubes and outperform state-of-the-art techniques. As the problem is relatively new, we collected two challenging datasets for UAVs and Aircrafts, which can be used as benchmarks for flying objects detection and vision-guided collision avoidance.

We introduce a learning-based approach to detect repeatable keypoints under drastic imaging changes of weather and lighting conditions to which state-of-the-art keypoint detectors are surprisingly sensitive. We first identify good keypoint candidates in multiple training images taken from the same viewpoint. We then train a regressor to predict a score map whose maxima are those points so that they can be found by simple non-maximum suppression. As there are no standard datasets to test the influence of these kinds of changes, we created our own, which we will make publicly available. We will show that our method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in such challenging conditions, while still achieving state-of-the-art performance on untrained standard datasets.
