This symposium addresses how different classes of research methods, all based upon the use of log data from educational software, can facilitate the analysis of students' learning strategies and behaviors. To this end, four multi-method programs of research are discussed, including the use of qualitative, quantitative-statistical, quantitative-modeling, and educational data mining methods. The symposium presents evidence regarding the applicability of each type of method to research questions of different grain sizes, and provides several examples of how these methods can be used in concert to facilitate our understanding of learning processes, learning strategies, and behaviors related to motivation, meta-cognition, and engagement. © ISLS.

Collaboration in complex learning scenarios does not succeed automatically without structuring the learning process. The Metafora project (http://***) is designing a pedagogy and a platform of web-based software to support learning to learn together (L2L2) in the context of math and science. The platform serves both as a toolbox of various learning tools and as a communication architecture to support cross-tool interoperability. The central tool in the Metafora system is a web-based application offering a visual language for planning, enacting and reflecting on learning activities. In the demonstration we will present our pedagogical approach for supporting L2L2 activities and the platform developed on the basis of this understanding. In particular we will demonstrate how the platform can be integrated in successive activities. © ISLS.

As more information resources become accessible using computers,our digital interfaces to those resources need to be appropriate for all people. However when it comes to digital libraries, the interfaces have typically been designed for older children or adults. Therefore, we have begun to develop a digital library interface developmentally appropriate for young children (ages 5-10 years old). Our prototype system we now call SearchKids offers a graphical interface for querying, browsing and reviewing search results. This paper describes our motivation for the research, the design partnership we established between children and adults, our design process, the technology outcomes of our current work, and the lessons we have learned.

As tech giants such as Apple and Meta invest heavily in Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) technologies, often collectively termed Extended Reality (XR) devices, a significant societal concern emerges: The use of eye-tracking technology within these devices. Gaze data holds immense value, revealing insights into user attention, health, and cognitive states. This raises substantial concerns over privacy and fairness, with potential risks of targeted ads, unauthorized surveillance, and data re-purposing. As the impact of eye tracking is due to transition from the lab to the broader public, this paper underscores these pivotal issues in a digestible manner to the general audience. To this end, we first outline the eye-tracking data collection process and its potential for user insights. Second, we introduce perspectives from the domain of privacy, emphasizing its significance as a pivotal measure to guard against the improper use of eye-tracking data. Third, we provide a set of guidelines created by researchers actively working within this space. These recommendations are designed to guide policymakers and the general public toward establishing informed, equitable, and privacy-centric standards surrounding these devices.

Interactive segmentation is a crucial research area in medical image analysis aiming to boost the efficiency of costly annotations by incorporating human feedback. This feedback takes the form of clicks, scribbles, or masks and allows for iterative refinement of the model output so as to efficiently guide the system towards the desired behavior. In recent years, deep learning-based approaches have propelled results to a new level causing a rapid growth in the field with 121 methods proposed in the medical imaging domain alone. In this review, we provide a structured overview of this emerging field featuring a comprehensive taxonomy, a systematic review of existing methods, and an in-depth analysis of current practices. Based on these contributions, we discuss the challenges and opportunities in the field. For instance, we find that there is a severe lack of comparison across methods which needs to be tackled by standardized baselines and benchmarks. Appendixes are here. © 2023, CC BY.

Digital Fabrication Technology in the Library: Where We Are and Where We Are Going

Stephanie is interested in creating dynamic hands-on learning opportunities in libraries especially around making STEM topics and digital creation. With experience in youth services technology and instruction she delights in helping people of all ages discover what the 21st century public library can do. Information science and technology at Syracuse University. Her research lies at the intersection of human computer interaction and social theory with particular interest in feminist science and technology studies and ubiquitous computing. Lauren's dissertation work explores the relationship between the human body and embedded/implanted technology. Lauren is a student researcher with the BITS Lab at Syracuse University.

EDITOR'S SUMMARY Makerspaces are environments where crafters and techies can come together to create, share and learn. Many libraries support the maker movement by providing access to a variety of technologies from sewing machines and looms to recording equipment and production tools, an expansion of services that is in line with promoting literacy, community and lifelong learning. About one third of makerspaces charged a fee or required membership in 2013, though some, including libraries and museums, are supported by major funding agencies. Digital fabrication technology or 3D printers are increasingly available through library-based makerspaces and extend opportunities for STEM education, but libraries face challenges from high initial and ongoing costs, user training and even encouraging users in 3D thinking and design. 3D printers can be a powerful stimulus for creativity, learning and sharing, even promoting jobs and community development.

In this paper, we present a review of how the various aspects of any study using an eye tracker (such as the instrument, methodology, environment, participant, etc.) affect the quality of the recorded eye-tracking data and the obtained eye-movement and gaze measures. We take this review to represent the empirical foundation for reporting guidelines of any study involving an eye tracker. We compare this empirical foundation to five existing reporting guidelines and to a database of 207 published eye-tracking studies. We find that reporting guidelines vary substantially and do not match with actual reporting practices. We end by deriving a minimal, flexible reporting guideline based on empirical research (Section "An empirically based minimal reporting guideline").

The fields of music, health, and technology have seen significant interactions in recent years in developing music technology for health care and well-being. In an effort to strengthen the collaboration between the involved disciplines, the workshop “Music, Computing, and Health” was held to discuss best practices and state-of-the-art at the intersection of these areas with researchers from music psychology and neuroscience, music therapy, music information retrieval, music technology, medical technology (medtech), and robotics. Following the discussions at the workshop, this article provides an overview of the different methods of the involved disciplines and their potential contributions to developing music technology for health and well-being. Furthermore, the article summarizes the state of the art in music technology that can be applied in various health scenarios and provides a perspective on challenges and opportunities for developing music technology that (1) supports person-centered care and evidence-based treatments, and (2) contributes to developing standardized, large-scale research on music-based interventions in an interdisciplinary manner. The article provides a resource for those seeking to engage in interdisciplinary research using music-based computational methods to develop technology for health care, and aims to inspire future research directions by evaluating the state of the art with respect to the challenges facing each field. © The Author(s) 2021.
