Visualization of particle traces provides intuitive and efficient means for the exploration and analysis of complex vector fields. The paper presents a method suitable for the real-time visualization of arbitrarily large time-varying vector fields in virtual environments. We describe an out-of-core scheme in which two distinct pre-processing and rendering components enable real-time data streaming and visualization. The presented approach yields low-latency application start-up times and small memory footprints. The described system was used to implement a "volumetric fog lance," which can emit up to 60000 particles into a flow field while maintaining an interactive frame rate of 60 frames per second. All algorithms were specifically designed to support commodity hardware. The proof-of-concept system is running on a low-cost Linux workstation equipped with a 120 GB E-IDE RAID (redundant array of inexpensive disk) system.

Arm animation algorithms are often categorized by their constraint expansion strategy. One option is the geometric bounding polygon-cone strategy, a simple containment search strategy that traverses the search space in the order in which successor bounding polygon edges are generated. An alternative is the ThetaPhi-cone strategy, which was designed to make it possible to use domain-specific heuristic information. By exploring promising parts of the cone space first, ThetaPhi-cone algorithms generally are more efficient than polygon-cone algorithms.
Spaceborne stereo-imagery can serve two major purposes: relief mapping and extraction of thematic information. Not only camera-acquired photogrammetric data of conventional and super-large format, but also hand-held p...
We describe an algorithm for three-dimensional display of discrete objects in a discrete space. There are no restrictions on the objects: they may be concave or convex, have holes (including interior holes) and can co...

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you all to the proceedings of the 2nd InternationalSymposiumonVisualComputing(ISVC2006)heldinLakeTahoe. Followinga successfulmeeting lastyear, wewitnesseda muchstrongerandmore productive event this year. ISVC o?ers a common umbrella for the four main areas of visual computing including vision, graphics, visualization, and virtual reality. Its goal is to provide a forum for researchers, scientists, engineers and practitionersthroughouttheworldtopresenttheirlatestresearch?ndings, ideas, developments and applications in the broader area of visual computing. This year, the program consisted of 13 oral sessions, one poster session, ten special tracks, and six keynote presentations. The response to the call for - pers was very strong. We received more than twice the papers received last year. Speci?cally, we received over 280 submissions for the main symposium from which we accepted 65 papers for oral presentation (23% acceptance) and 56 papers for poster presentation (20% acceptance). Special track papers were solicited separately through the Organizing and Program Committees of each track. A total of 57 papers were accepted for presentation in the special tracks. All papers were reviewed with an emphasis on potential to contribute to the state of the art in the ?eld. Selection criteria included accuracy and originality of ideas, clarity and signi?cance of results, and presentation quality. The review process was quite rigorous, involving two to three independent blind reviews followed by several days of discussion. During the discussion period we tried to correct anomalies and errors that might have existed in the initial reviews.

Progess in specific computer-assisted techniques (digital imaging , computer-aided diagnosis, image-guided surgery, MEMS, etc.) combined with computer-assisted integration tools offers a valuable complement to or replacement for existing procedures in healthcare. Physicians are now employing PACS and telemedicine systems as enabling infrastructures to improve quality of and access to healthcare. Tools based on CAD and CAS facilitate completely new paths in patient care. To ensure that CARS tools benefit the patient, collaboration between various disciplines, specifically radiology, surgery, engineering, informatics, and healthcare management, is a critical factor. A multidisciplinary congress like CARS is a step in the desired direction of knowledge sharing and crossover education. It provides the necessary cooperative framework for advancing the development and application of modern computer-assisted technologies in healthcare.
