In this research, a classification method for human touching behaviors to haptic therapy robot is proposed. It is difficult to apply explicit discrete representation for human touch behaviors such as "slap", "pat" due to the existence of intermediate touch behavioral patterns. Therefore a new classification approach for human touch behaviors using Self Organizing Map (SOM) is proposed, using its ability to classify the nearby data in to a group. Further in this research the axis of out put maps are defined to be meaningful by specifying the initial placement of the input data during the training process.

In this study, a single-input multiple-outputs current-mode analog biquadratic filter, based on current differencing transconducatance amplifier (CDTA) is presented. The proposed filter uses two CDTAs, one resistor and two grounded capacitors, which is well suited for integrated circuit implementation. The circuit simultaneously gives 3 standard transfer functions, namely, lowpass, highpass and bandpass filters with independent control of quality factor and pole frequency by electronic method. By summing of IHP and ILP, the notch filter can be also achieved. Moreover, the circuit possesses low input and high output impedance which would be an ideal choice for current-mode cascading. The PSPICE simulation results are included verifying the workability of the proposed filter. The given results agree well with the theoretical anticipation.

Maximum heart rate (MHR) is commonly used to estimate exercise intensity with the Karvonen formula, and there are several methods of calculating it. In this study, we used pedaling experiments on a cycle ergometer to evaluate methods of determining MHR in order to select the ones most suitable for the Karvonen formula. In the experiments, 43 subjects rode an aerobike. The results show that, for people in their 20s, two methods are suitable for estimating exercise intensity with the Karvonen formula. The main physical parameters affecting exercise intensity were also extracted, based on the experimental results.

This paper presents a shunt active power filter based on the concept of open-end winding (OEW) transformers. The proposed configuration is constituted of two converters with three legs each series connected throughout a three-phase OEW transformer. Model PWM strategy and control scheme are presented as well. The main advantage of the proposed system lies on the multi-level waveform generation, which allows reduction of either harmonic distortions or switching losses. This proposed topology is suitable for medium voltage (MV) distribution systems. Simulation and experimental results validate the theoretical study.

The Usefulness of Overheard Information for Collision Avoidance in a Single-hop Underwater Acoustic Networks

A MAC protocol that depends on overheard information for its collision avoidance, such as Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) [1], may not work well in underwater, due to the long propagation delay characteristic of an underwater acoustic (UWA) channel. In such channel, the overheard information may already become obsolete by the time it reaches the node and, thus, should not be taken into account in the collision avoidance mechanism. Intuitively, the degree of usefulness of overheard information plays an important role in determining the network performance for channel listening-based MAC protocols. In this paper, we analytically study the usefulness of overheard information for collision avoidance in two different channel listening-based MAC protocols: (1) CSMA [1] and (2) Aloha-CA [2]. From our study, it is shown that the overheard information is beneficial for collision avoidance only if certain conditions can be satisfied. More specifically, in order for a node that overhears an ongoing transmission to be able to utilize the extracted information for collision avoidance, the node must be within a bounded region that is determined by the relative positions of the sender and the receiver, the packet's transmission time, as well as the length of the packet's header. Based on this analysis, we also present the “usefulness index (U)” which is defined as the degree of usefulness of information overheard.

We present an approach for complete inkjet printing of solar cell front contacts for the implementation of "selective emitter approach", which can help in solar cell efficiency improvement. The fabrication of optimized emitters that can allow the low recombination below the silver front contact is an important process in solar cell fabrication. This selective emitter approach presents a heavily doped layer beneath the electrode and lightly doped regions between the electrode grids. Selective opening of the anti reflection coating is needed to implement this combination of heavily and lightly doped regions. This was achieved using an inkjet approach by printing an etchant-dopant ink followed by the printing of a diffusion barrier using a dielectric ink. Using a Trident Jet256S industrial printhead we created etched pattern with etch width -50 μm. Once this pattern was created, the metallic front contact grid was printed using a silver nano-ink on top of the etched regions. Inkjet printed silver front contact grid with line width -75 μm was printed successfully.

This paper considers the problem of the compensation of an unknown dead zone in the input of a plant. A new compensation method is presented based on the estimation of an equivalent input disturbance (EID). Unlike other methods, this method does not require the exact information of a dead zone. First, we consider the dead zone as an input-dependent disturbance and employ an EID estimator to estimate it. Then, we incorporate the estimate in the control input and compensate the effect of the dead zone almost completely. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the method. The recent advances in Grid and Cloud computing make new types of applications possible. At the same time, they require an infrastructure to implement heterogeneous computing resources time and cost-savely. Here, approaches that utilize design patterns, i.e., proven solutions to existing problems, seem to provide a good approach to enable these kind of applications. In this paper, we investigated which design patterns are already used in the area of Grid computing nowadays. After a brief description of the literature study design, we present our findings which include the discovered design patterns, corresponding categories, and application areas.
