In supply chains of petroleum industry, maintaining a proper inventory level for multiple petroleum products is a crucial issue. Basically, this chain has several elements like producer bases, consumer bases and terminals that are linked by means of a multi-modal transport network. These elements must cooperate to achieve the global goal of the system with a minimized cost. To achieve this goal, this paper presents a multiagent protocol for simultaneous negotiations based on the Contract-Net and the application of this in the chain aforementioned. As a result, this protocol proved to be very efficient to return a feasible solution in a low processing time.

Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs) are not only cost-effective, but also provide high throughput, high bandwidth utilization, and low transmission latency. As a result, EPONs are a viable solution for overcoming the bandwidth bottleneck problem in local access networks. This study develops a novel Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) scheme, designated as Frame-oriented Interleaved Polling with Adaptive Cycle Time (FIPACT), to provide a differentiated Quality-of-Service (QoS) capability in EPONs. FIPACT adopts a framed approach, in which the upstream network bandwidth is partitioned into successive frames. Within each frame, each Optical Network Unit (ONU) is guaranteed the network resources necessary to transmit a specific quota of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), video, and Internet access traffic, respectively. Since FIPACT permits these three types of traffic stream to share the available bandwidth efficiently whilst still satisfying their respective QoS requirements, it provides an effective means of achieving differentiated triple-play services in EPONs. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.

Sliding mode control (SMC) has been considered as a powerful method for disturbances rejection. On the other hand, we have presented an equivalent-input disturbance (EID) approach to reject disturbances. This paper takes a dual-stage feed drive as an example to compare these two methods. The example shows that, while the EID approach obtains almost the same disturbance rejection performance for matched disturbances as that of the SMC does, it can reject unmatched disturbances. This shows the superiority of the EID approach over SMC method.

A low-power, low-voltage CMOS fully differential operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) operating in weak inversion region is presented in this paper. The proposed element allows the use of very small current for low-power and low-voltage features. The performances are examined through PSPICE simulations, displaying usabilities of the new active element. The power consumption is about 221nW at ±0.75V and bias current IB is 50nA. The description includes example as a balance output full-wave rectifier. © 2010 IEEE.

With potential application to a variety of industries, fleet sizing problems present a prevalent and significant challenge for engineers and managers. This is especially true of applications involving rail cars, where origins and destinations have capacity restrictions. This paper presents a new multi-objective optimization formulation, solution method, and analysis for multi-periodic fleet sizing problems of various sizes. Profit and quality (minimal unmet demands) represent conflicting objectives and are maximized simultaneously. The Pareto optimal set is depicted and is used for trade-off analysis. The solution involves the optimal fleet size as well as the optimal rail-car allocation strategy. The proposed approach is applied to an example problem and is shown to be successful, ultimately providing a new managerial tool for planning and analyzing rail-car fleets more effectively. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

Product design is an important process in industry whereas it has been usually performed based on aesthetics and static strength rather than on dynamical features of the product in use, or more specifically, in grasping. In this paper, dynamical analysis of grasping is to be discussed. Because it is difficult to deal with an actual hand dynamically interacting with an object, a hand model in dynamical simulation environment is used for the analysis. The hand model moves corresponding to a hand wearing a data glove. In the simulation, contact force vectors are calculated for each contact point between the hand model and the object to be grasped. © 2010 SICE.

An experiment was performed for the observation of H emission induced in a cooled laser-induced atmospheric pressure gas plasma of He atoms in their metastable excited state. The strong H emission detected clearly established, to the exclusion of other well known major excitation processes, the exclusive contribution of the He-induced excitation (HIE) mechanism. The process is suggested to take place by means of energy transfer from the excited He atoms to the H atoms via Penning collision induced ionization involving electron exchange. The result further shows that this mechanism may also work for elements other than H and thereby strongly suggests the use of ambient He gas to broaden and complement the applications of standard laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

Short-term load forecasting has received a lot of attention from both researchers and practitioners. Many techniques, such as neural networks, fuzzy logic, and time series models, are developed to improve the modeling and forecasting process with varying success. Some research has also been devoted to improving the weather forecast or relieving the impact of uncertainties in the weather forecast. Nowadays, the quality of load and weather data history becomes a bottleneck of enhancing the forecast accuracy. With the emerging Smart Grid initiatives, the utilities have the opportunities to upgrade their infrastructure, which includes the advanced metering systems. These upgrades will potentially lead to a high quality load history in the near future. On the other hand, quality of weather history has been a concern of the small and medium sized utilities. This paper presents a recent study for a medium sized utility in eastern US. Multiple linear regression, which is currently deployed in this utility, is used to generate the base forecast in this paper. A Monte Carlo based methodology is proposed to quantify the cost of the data uncertainties in the temperature history. Finally, a cost-benefit analysis is performed to help the utilities decide how many weather stations should be installed. ©2010 IEEE.

This research proposes a method to eliminate friction effect and reduced tracking error on CNC milling machines. A CNC milling machine has many connected mechanical components which have friction effects such as ball screws and rails. To control servo motors which are used to drive X-Y table in CNC milling machine, the conventional PID controller is widely used. In this research, Panasonic motor driver is set to the torque control mode. To compensate the friction effects, the friction feedforward compensation method is proposed. Moreover, to reduce the position tracking error, position feedforward controller is used. The simulation and implementation of position control in one axis of PID with Friction Feedforward Compensation and Position Feedforward Controller (FFC-PFC) are presented.
