This paper proposes a new 4 kbit/s speech coder based on CELP structure with 45 ms total codec delay. The coder is mainly featured by the renewal codebook of the excitation signal and the linked split-vector quantizer of line spectrum pair parameters which enable the coder to get high quality speech at low bit rate. In addition, techniques of formant enhancement in the spectral envelop and harmonic recovery in the transient region are also introduced to reduce buzzy and hoarse sounds, respectively. From the intensive listening test with intermediated response system (IRS) speech, we obtained a comparable subjective quality to 32 kbit/s ADPCM (ITU Recommendation G.726) under a nominal speech input level of -26 dB overload.

This paper describes a simulator for the Shiva multiprocessor system and the simulator construction methodology (SCM) used in its creation. The SCM, based on the active functional unit (AFU) construct, is a modern SCM which is flexible, accurate, fast, easy to use, capable of dynamic reconfigurability at run-time, and most of all simple and capable of quick simulator construction. The AFU SCM is capable of all these things through the use of object-oriented software techniques. The Shiva simulator constructed using the AFU SCM is program-driven and capable of micro and macro architectural simulation.

In this paper we present a new approach of spectral decorrelation for multispectral image compression. It is based on the merging of two main tendencies such as the use of KLT as spectral decorrelator and object based image coding schemes. The use of the principal component in multispectral imagery is described and used to perform a multispectral segmentation. This segmentation is taken as the basis for a specific spectral decorrelation for each segmented class. The resulting eigenimages present lower variance than classical KLT approaches, leading to better compression ratios.

This paper presents a method for recovering, by using the iterative Fourier-transform algorithm, the complex amplitude transmittance of a recorded one-dimensional Fourier transform-type kinoform. A method for estimating the phase-recording characteristic of the kinoform fabrication system by comparing the retrieved phase with the theoretical phase is also presented. The spatial variations of both the magnitude and phase inside each of the kinoform cells were evaluated to improve estimation of the phase-recording characteristic. The initial estimate of the kinoform phase given to the algorithm was derived using the knowledge that the recorded phase is an approximation of the phase to be recorded. The relationship between the shift of the central sampling point of the Fourier image from the optical axis and the retrieved phase of the kinoform is investigated;a kinoform phase pattern with a structure suitable for indirectly detecting the shift is then proposed. In an experiment using a kinoform fabrication system including a photographic process, the recorded phase distribution is retrieved at five sampling points of each cell. The phase-recording characteristic is estimated using the retrieved phase values. Next, a computer simulation is executed to reveal the influence of errors in the measurement of magnitude. The simulation result shows that the recorded phase distribution can approximately be retrieved when the rms error added to the magnitude is approximately 10 percent of its average. Furthermore, the validity of the phase distribution retrieved in the experiment is discussed.

The subband adaptive system, where the idea of the filter bank is applied to the adaptive filter, has a feature that a higher-order adaptation can be reduced to lower-order adaptations. The reduction of the order of the adaptive filter is related closely to the number of channels and the decimation ratio. The order of adaptive digital filter (ADF) is decreased greatly when the number of subbands is increased, and the decimation ratio is increased up to the maximum value. Then, however, the number of coefficient-updates per unit time is decreased, which results in the deterioration of the convergence Speed. From such a viewpoint, this paper discusses a method to improve the convergence speed, which is deteriorated in the subband adaptive system, due to the decimation. The idea of the proposed method is to utilize effectively the data which have been discarded in the decimation process and to improve the convergence speed. It is called the multirate repeating method. As the first step, the multirate repeating method is applied to the conventional subband adaptive system and the convergence speed is improved. Then a subband adaptive system is introduced in which the multirate repeating method can be utilized more effectively. As a result, a faster convergence is realized while retaining the ADF order-reduction effect, which is an advantage of the subband adaptive system.
