Feature extraction is a critical component of facial expression recognition, requiring careful selection to ensure optimal performance. Traditional template-based models often struggle with computational efficiency and are sensitive to factors such as illumination, color variation, and image quality. Although geometry-based models have demonstrated robustness in feature extraction, further optimization remains needed to enhance the recognition accuracy. In this study, the CK+ dataset is utilized, and employ facial landmarks as a geometry-based feature extraction method. The extracted features are then processed using an Extreme Learning Machine combined with Genetic Algorithms (ELM-GA) to select a subset of features and classify facial expressions. The proposed model effectively reduces the number of features used in the classification model by more than half, improving computational efficiency. Additionally, the accuracy of the proposed model outperforms the VGGNet and combination of machine learning and Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and machine learning and Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) for feature extraction. Although the current model does not represent the best possible solution, the promising accuracy results provide a solid foundation for further refinement and development in facial expression recognition systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Unsupervised Low-Light Image Enhancement Based on Explicit Denoising and Knowledge Distillation

Under low-illumination conditions, the quality of image signals deteriorates significantly, typically characterized by a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) below 10 dB, which severely limits the usability of the images. Supervised methods, which utilize paired high-low light images as training sets, can enhance the PSNR to around 20 dB, significantly improving image quality. However, such data is challenging to obtain. In recent years, unsupervised low-light image enhancement (LIE) methods based on the Retinex framework have been proposed, but they generally lag behind supervised methods by 5–10 dB in performance. In this paper, we introduce the Denoising-Distilled Retine (DDR) method, an unsupervised approach that integrates denoising priors into a Retinex-based training framework. By explicitly incorporating denoising, the DDR method effectively addresses the challenges of noise and artifacts in low-light images, thereby enhancing the performance of the Retinex framework. The model achieved a PSNR of 19.82 dB on the LOL dataset, which is comparable to the performance of supervised methods. Furthermore, by applying knowledge distillation, the DDR method optimizes the model for real-time processing of low-light images, achieving a processing speed of 199.7 fps without incurring additional computational costs. While the DDR method has demonstrated superior performance in terms of image quality and processing speed, there is still room for improvement in terms of robustness across different color spaces and under highly resource-constrained conditions. Future research will focus on enhancing the model’s generalizability and adaptability to address these challenges. Our rigorous testing on public datasets further substantiates the DDR method’s state-of-the-art performance in both image quality and processing speed.

Image Enhancement via Associated Perturbation Removal and Texture Reconstruction Learning

Degradation under challenging conditions such as rain, haze, and low light not only diminishes content visibility, but also results in additional degradation side effects, including detail occlusion and color distortion. However, current technologies have barely explored the correlation between perturbation removal and background restoration, consequently struggling to generate high-naturalness content in challenging scenarios. In this paper, we rethink the image enhancement task from the perspective of joint optimization: Perturbation removal and texture reconstruction. To this end, we advise an efficient yet effective image enhancement model, termed the perturbation-guided texture reconstruction network(PerTeRNet). It contains two subnetworks designed for the perturbation elimination and texture reconstruction tasks, respectively. To facilitate texture recovery,we develop a novel perturbation-guided texture enhancement module(PerTEM) to connect these two tasks, where informative background features are extracted from the input with the guidance of predicted perturbation priors. To alleviate the learning burden and computational cost, we suggest performing perturbation removal in a sub-space and exploiting super-resolution to infer high-frequency background details. Our PerTeRNet has demonstrated significant superiority over typical methods in both quantitative and qualitative measures, as evidenced by extensive experimental results on popular image enhancement and joint detection tasks. The current diagnostic methods for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) based on Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (rs-fMRI) face two significant challenges. Firstly, the functional connectivity networks (FCNs) of the brain are subject to uncertainty due to noise interference during the rs-fMRI acquisition process. Secondly, variations in equipment parameters across different imaging sites lead to diverse distributions of collected features. To address these issues, this paper introduces a novel Multi-Task Stacked Adaptive Fuzzy Neural Network (AT-STTSK) specifically designed for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) classification. The proposed network seamlessly integrates a Multi-Output TSK (MO-TSK) fuzzy system, a Stacked Autoencoder (SAE), and a Transformer. This integration aims to reduce the impact of uncertainty factors, enhance the model's interpretability, and leverage the multi-head attention mechanisms to capture both local and global information, thus strengthening feature learning. Additionally, we explore the utilization of a Contrastive Learning (CL) strategy to further optimize the model. By incorporating these advancements, our AT-STTSK network offers a promising approach for improving the accuracy and reliability of ASD diagnosis based on rs-fMRI data. The validity of the method in this paper is verified on ABIDE dataset, and the result shows that the accuracy rate can reach 85.7% at most. © 2024 IEEE.

Games have been the perfect test beds for artificial intelligence (AI) research for the characteristics that widely exist in real-world scenarios. Learning and optimization, decision-making in dynamic and uncertain environments, game theory, planning and scheduling, design, and education are common research areas shared between games and real-world problems. Numerous open-source games or game-based environments have been implemented to study AI. In addition to single- or multiplayer, collaborative, and adversarial games, there has also been growing interest in implementing platforms for creative design in recent years. Those platforms provide ideal benchmarks for exploring and comparing AI ideas and techniques. This article reviews the games and game-based platforms for AI research, provides guidance on matching particular types of AI with suitable games for testing and matching particular needs in games with suitable AI techniques, discusses the research trend induced by the evolution of those games and platforms, and gives an outlook. © 2024 IEEE.

Bug localization based on syntactical and semantic information of source code

The existing software bug localization models treat the source file as natural language, which leads to the loss of syntactical and structure information of the source file. A bug localization model based on syntactical and semantic information of source code is proposed. Firstly, abstract syntax tree(AST) is divided based on node category to obtain statement sequence. The statement tree is encoded into vectors to capture lexical and syntactical knowledge at the statement ***, the source code is transformed into vector representation by the sequence naturalness of the statement. Therefore,the problem of gradient vanishing and explosion caused by a large AST size is obviated when using AST to the represent source code. Finally, the correlation between bug reports and source files are comprehensively analyzed from three aspects of syntax, semantics and text to locate the buggy code. Experiments show that compared with other standard models, the proposed model improves the performance of bug localization, and it has good advantages in mean reciprocal rank(MRR), mean average precision(MAP) and Top N Rank.

The systolic array (SA) architecture is widely used in accelerator/AI chip design due to its excellent matrix multiplication acceleration effect. However, the mismatch between the traditional sparse matrix compression format and the SA architecture results in poor SA performance in computing sparse matrices. To solve the problem, we propose a method for co-designing the sparse compression format and SA architecture. This work proposes the Vector Group Compressed Coordinate (VGCC) data stream compression format and designs a sparse SA architecture based on hardware encoding and decoding. VGCC can handle data streams of any size without increasing the index bit width. The VGCC compression size is significantly smaller than general sparse compression formats such as COO/CSR. In a sparse matrix with a sparsity of 90%, it saves 67.13% of storage space compared to the state-of-the-art ECOO data stream compression format and achieves an average acceleration of 1.54 times. We also propose a VGCC-friendly SA architecture. Our SA architecture engine reduces logic consumption by 51.6% compared to Sparse TPU while achieving a 3.23x speedup. To mitigate the issue of high no-load rates in systolic arrays, we introduce a Data Transmission Priority (DTP) data matching algorithm. With sparsity levels ranging from 50% to 90%, the algorithm’s calculation speed is enhanced by 1.124x to 1.991x. We implemented a sparse DNN accelerator on an FPGA Zynq UltraScale+MPSoC ZCU102, utilizing the VGCC compression format proposed in this study for compressing input data. When compared to the S2 Engine, the accelerator achieved a 3.37x speed improvement in matrix multiplication with 75% sparsity, significantly enhancing the speed of sparse matrix multiplication.
