Precision medicine in cancer treatment increasingly relies on advanced radiotherapies, such as proton beam radiotherapy, to enhance efficacy of the treatment. When the proton beam in this treatment interacts with patient matter, the excited nuclei may emit prompt gamma ray interactions that can be captured by a Compton camera. The image reconstruction from this captured data faces the issue of mischaracterizing the sequences of incoming scattering events, leading to excessive background noise. To address this problem, several machine learning models such as Feedfoward Neural Networks (FNN) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) were developed in PyTorch to properly characterize the scattering sequences on simulated datasets, including newly-created patient medium data, which were generated by using a pipeline comprised of the GEANT4 and Monte-Carlo Detector Effects (MCDE) softwares. These models were implemented using the novel ‘Big-data REU Integrated Development and Experimentation’ (BRIDE) platform, a modular pipeline that streamlines preprocessing, feature engineering, and model development and evaluation on parallelized GPU processors. Hyperparameter studies were done on the novel patient data as well as on water phantom datasets used during previous research. Patient data was more difficult than water phantom data to classify for both FNN and RNN models. FNN models had higher accuracy on patient medium data but lower accuracy on water phantom data when compared to RNN models. Previous results on several different datasets were reproduced on BRIDE and multiple new models achieved greater performance than in previous research.

ABSTRACTOpen Learner Model (OLM) visualisations capture and display a learner’s learning state such as knowledge levels, learning progress, and misconceptions. Exposing learners to their own models offers learners a perspective about their learning state. Numerous benefits have been reported include providing more opportunities for learners to collaborate, enhancing learning outcomes, and prompting learners to be more self-regulated. We describe a new independent OLM tool, Doubtfire++ that we have designed to support Task-Oriented Portfolio teaching to raise student awareness of their progress and achievements, and to encourage self-regulated learning. The results of our evaluation show that Doubtfire++ helped the teaching staff in creating a supportive learning environment and students felt supported and rewarded for learning in a self-regulated manner. We have identified several OLM visualizations that were perceived to assist self-regulated learning. We also have gained insightful inputs and feedback that lead to expanding its application to a broader context.

Context: Contemporary software development is typically conducted in dynamic, resource-scarce environments that are prone to the accumulation of technical debt. While this general phenomenon is acknowledged, what remains unknown is how technical debt specifically manifests in and affects software processes, and how the software development techniques employed accommodate or mitigate the presence of this debt. Objectives: We sought to draw on practitioner insights and experiences in order to classify the effects of agile method use on technical debt management, given the popularity and perceived success of agile methods. We explore the breadth of practitioners' knowledge about technical debt;how technical debt is manifested across the software process;and the perceived effects of common agile software development practices and processes on technical debt. In doing so, we address a research gap in technical debt knowledge and provide novel and actionable managerial recommendations. Method: We designed, tested and executed a multi-national survey questionnaire to address our objectives, receiving 184 responses from practitioners in Brazil, Finland, and New Zealand. Results: Our findings indicate that: 1) Practitioners are aware of technical debt, although, there was under utilization of the concept, 2) Technical debt commonly resides in legacy systems, however, concrete instances of technical debt are hard to conceptualize which makes it problematic to manage, 3) Queried agile practices and processes help to reduce technical debt;in particular, techniques that verify and maintain the structure and clarity of implemented artifacts (e.g., Coding standards and Refactoring) positively affect technical debt management. Conclusions: The fact that technical debt instances tend to have characteristics in common means that a systematic approach to its management is feasible. This paper reports on the NTIRE 2024 Quality Assessment of AI-Generated Content Challenge, which will be held in conjunction with the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement Workshop (NTIRE) at CVPR 2024. This challenge is to address a major challenge in the field of image and video processing, namely, Image Quality Assessment (IQA) and Video Quality Assessment (VQA) for AI-Generated Content (AIGC). The challenge is divided into the image track and the video track. The image track uses the AIGIQA-20K, which contains 20,000 AI-Generated Images (AIGIs) generated by 15 popular generative models. The image track has a total of 318 registered participants. A total of 1,646 submissions are received in the development phase, and 221 submissions are received in the test phase. Finally, 16 participating teams submitted their models and fact sheets. The video track uses the T2VQA-DB, which contains 10,000 AI-Generated Videos (AIGVs) generated by 9 popular Text-to-Video (T2V) models. A total of 196 participants have registered in the video track. A total of 991 submissions are received in the development phase, and 185 submissions are received in the test phase. Finally, 12 participating teams submitted their models and fact sheets. Some methods have achieved better results than baseline methods, and the winning methods in both tracks have demonstrated superior prediction performance on AIGC. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Biodiesel has gained tremendous attention from researchers due to its environmentally friendly and renewable fuel manufactured domestically from vegetable oils or animal fats. Multiple factors, including emission and fuel efficiency, measure the performance of biodiesel. These characteristics make the process of evaluation and benchmarking a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. This research attempts to survey the literature for multi-criteria decision-making applications on biodiesel. This systematic review was carried out on four scientific databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, and WoS. The collected articles were summarized and mapped into a coherent taxonomy, while the main challenges, motivations, and recommendations were collected and categorized for better understanding and finding out essential characteristics. The final set of included articles was 33, and they were categorized into six different categories. Most articles (n=15/33) investigated the evaluation and selection of biodiesel alternatives using MCDM. Furthermore, a state-of-art bibliometric analysis is provided. The analysis demonstrates several challenges in this area, such as source selection, optimum fuel blending, and uncertainty. This article is expected to assist future researchers in addressing the current gaps and contribute to advancing this area. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

This article proposes a concept of building a payment system for subscription-based services in cases of fixed prices and with recurring frequency. The proposed solution offers the user the opportunity for ease-of-use and transaction fee cost savings. The proposed method of calculating balances for crypto-wallets can be applied to other financial services that provide traditional banking products based on decentralized public platforms. The concept is deployed in the form of a smart contract for issuing tokens on Ethereum, which is backward compatible with ERC-20 and ERC-777, and can form the basis for a new EVM-based decentralized network standard.

A vehicular network underpinned by the 3-tier vehicle-edge-cloud infrastructure enables an efficient and safer travel experience. The compute-intensive vehicular applications are often offloaded to the edge and/or cloud servers to enhance the applications’ Quality of Services (QoS). The underlying edge-cloud servers consume a high among of energy. Consequently, it becomes crucial to optimizing energy consumption in the offloading process. Current energy-efficient offloading strategies in 2-tier vehicle-edge infrastructure, do not account for cloud computing energy consumption. In this paper, we address this void by proposing a machine learning-based energy-aware offloading algorithm, which optimizes the energy of the edge-cloud computing platform. The offloading strategy is enabled by the Support Vector Machine (SVM) regression model machine learning algorithm used for the edge-cloud power prediction. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is a promising approach in energy savings.

The Role of Masks in Mitigating Viral Spread on Networks

Masks have remained an important mitigation strategy in the fight against COVID-19 due to their ability to prevent the transmission of respiratory droplets between individuals. In this work, we provide a comprehensive quantitative analysis of the impact of mask-wearing. To this end, we propose a novel agent-based model of viral spread on networks where agents may either wear no mask or wear one of several types of masks with different properties (e.g., cloth or surgical). We derive analytical expressions for three key epidemiological quantities: the probability of emergence, the epidemic threshold, and the expected epidemic size. In particular, we show how the aforementioned quantities depend on the structure of the contact network, viral transmission dynamics, and the distribution of the different types of masks within the population. Through extensive simulations, we then investigate the impact of different allocations of masks within the population and trade-offs between the outward efficiency and inward efficiency of the masks. Interestingly, we find that masks with high outward efficiency and low inward efficiency are most useful for controlling the spread in the early stages of an epidemic, while masks with high inward efficiency but low outward efficiency are most useful in reducing the size of an already large spread. Lastly, we study whether degree-based mask allocation is more effective in reducing the probability of epidemic as well as epidemic size compared to random allocation. The result echoes the previous findings that mitigation strategies should differ based on the stage of the spreading process, focusing on source control before the epidemic emerges and on self-protection after the emergence. software has become an indispensable part of industrial production and thus influences the life cycle of manufacturing systems, as many of these systems have to be replaced or evolved due to changing requirements. software adaptation through continuous evolution extends the service time of these systems and thus saves valuable resources. In this paper we present an interdisciplinary methodology for reengineering legacy software to increase the productive lifetime. Our proposed approach systematically reuses implicit domain knowledge to evolve, validate and commission new software from legacy code.
