Runtime monitoring is commonly used to detect the violation of desired properties in safety critical cyber-physical systems by observing its executions. Bauer et al. introduced an influential framework for monitoring Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) properties based on a three-valued semantics for a finite execution: the formula is already satisfied by the given execution, it is already violated, or it is still undetermined, i.e., it can still be satisfied and violated by appropriate extensions of the given execution. However, a wide range of formulas are not monitorable under this approach, meaning that there are executions for which satisfaction and violation will always remain undetermined no matter how it is extended. In particular, Bauer et al. report that 44% of the formulas they consider in their experiments fall into this category. Recently, a robust semantics for LTL was introduced to capture different degrees by which a property can be violated. In this paper we introduce a robust semantics for finite strings and show its potential in monitoring: every formula considered by Bauer et al. is monitorable under our approach. Furthermore, we discuss which properties that come naturally in LTL monitoring - such as the realizability of all truth values - can be transferred to the robust setting. We show that LTL formulas with robust semantics can be monitored by deterministic automata, and provide tight bounds on the size of the constructed automaton. Lastly, we report on a prototype implementation and compare it to the LTL monitor of Bauer et al. on a sample of examples. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Gamifying the educational systems implies the application of gaming rules in a non-gaming context. This has positively-affected the success and engagement of learners in the learning process. The learning styles work as an important factor for a better definition of the preferred way for a learner to learn, resulting in an adaptable system that understands the educational needs of the learner, with adaptable teaching styles that draw his attraction to continue learning. In this paper, we discuss the state-of-art principles needed for serious gamification, and investigate the main concepts required to create adaptive educational systems. This includes the study of the adaptation types considered for both normal and disabled/disordered learners, as well as building a detailed comparison between the different evaluated educational models, while highlighting the concepts applied and analyzing their strengths and weaknesses. © 2017 IEEE.

This paper proposes a system that is capable of detecting, recognizing and indicating traffic signs to the driver to provide a safe and convenient driving experience. The system is composed of three phases; image pre-processing phase, detection phase and recognition phase. Image pre-processing phase deals with image segmentation that is employed to enhance the images to obtain clearer information under variable lighting conditions. During the detection phase, the objective is to find traffic signs in the input image frames and to return the regional coordinates of detected signs. In order to detect traffic signs, a cascade classifier was trained to analyse the frame and to detect signs in each frame. In the recognition phase, a multiclass support vector machine image category classifier was trained to recognize and alert the driver. The system comprised of these phases is capable of detecting, recognizing and alerting traffic signs with 98.6% accuracy while the vehicle is moving at a speed in the range of 40-45 km/h.

The use of Deep Learning (DL) algorithms is increasingly evolving in many application domains. Despite the rapid growing of algorithm size and complexity, performing DL inference at the edge is becoming a clear trend to cope with low latency, privacy and bandwidth constraints. Nevertheless, traditional implementation on low-energy computing nodes often requires experience-based manual intervention and trial-and-error iterations to get to a functional and effective solution. This work presents a computer-aided design (CAD) support for effective implementation of DL algorithms on embedded systems, aiming at automating different design steps and reducing cost. The proposed tool flow comprises capabilities to consider architecture-and hardware-related variables at very early stages of the development process, from pre-training hyperparameter optimization and algorithm configuration to deployment, and to adequately address security, power efficiency and adaptivity requirements. This paper also presents some preliminary results obtained by the first implementation of the optimization techniques supported by the tool flow.

As more knowledge discovery functions or sensing units for event detection are added to sensor devices in the Internet of Things (IoT), devices acquire big data that is bigger than they are able to deliver using their radios in a given time window. As a result, energy consumption for big data acquisition and transmission and real-time data processing are great challenges. In this paper, we introduce BigReduce, a low- cost IoT framework for event detection that reduces a big amount of data at the time of data acquisition and before the data transmission across the network. BigReduce works on the analysis of the frequency content of signals as they are acquired and efficiently adapts the frequency rate based on the sensitivity to a respective event, such as fire event. Instead of transmitting the entire set of acquired data, BigReduce transmits only the signals that have a high event-sensitivity. We provide a detailed algorithm for fire event sensitivity indication based on the frequency consents. Results achieved through a lab testbed show that BigReduce is able to reduce energy consumption by at least 78% and data volume by 82% in comparison to other frameworks. © 2017 IEEE.

Neuroimaging techniques have been widely applied to various neurodegenerative disease analysis to reveal the intricate brain structure. The high dimensional neuroimaging features and limited sample size are the main challenges for the diagnosis task due to the unbalanced input data. To handle it, a sparse low-rank learning framework is proposed, which unveils the underlying relationships between input data and output targets by building a matrix-regularized feature network. Then we obtain the feature weight from the network based on local clustering coefficients. By discarding the irrelevant features and preserving the discriminative structured features, our proposed method can select the most relevant features and identify different stages of Parkinson's disease (PD) from normal controls. Extensive experimental results evaluated on the Parkinson's progression markers initiative (PPMI) dataset demonstrate that the proposed method achieves promising classification performance and outperforms the conventional algorithms. Furthermore, it can detect potential brain regions related to PD for future medical analysis.

Brain morphometry study plays a fundamental role in neuroimaging research. In this work, we propose a novel method for brain surface morphometry analysis based on surface foliation theory. Given brain cortical surfaces with automatically extracted landmark curves, we first construct finite foliations on surfaces. A set of admissible curves and a height parameter for each loop are provided by users. The admissible curves cut the surface into a set of pairs of pants. A pants decomposition graph is then constructed. Strebel differential is obtained by computing a unique harmonic map from surface to pants decomposition graph. The critical trajectories of Strebel differential decompose the surface into topological cylinders. After conformally mapping those topological cylinders to standard cylinders, parameters of standard cylinders (height, circumference) are intrinsic geometric features of the original cortical surfaces and thus can be used for morphometry analysis purpose. In this work, we propose a set of novel surface features rooted in surface foliation theory. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to make use of surface foliation theory for brain morphometry analysis. The features we computed are intrinsic and informative. The proposed method is rigorous, geometric, and automatic. Experimental results on classifying brain cortical surfaces between patients with Alzheimer's disease and healthy control subjects demonstrate the efficiency and efficacy of our method. The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) program is a long-term modernization and transformation of the current National Airspace System (NAS) into a more efficient and coordinated decision-making system. In order to test the key concepts and methods proposed by FAA and affiliated standard organizations such as RTCA (Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics), Modeling and Simulation (M&S)-based demonstration of the solutions are employed in the early stages for the verification and validation of concepts and their technologies. With the help of model-based and simulation-based engineering, large-scale systems integration and demonstrations take place seamlessly. This demands for common understanding of simulation scenarios, allowing for cross-platform interoperability. A major challenge facing the development and testing of the demonstrations is the lack of standard scenario definition language bridging the gap between the operational team (controllers, pilots, and dispatchers) and the engineering community. This paper will tackle aviation scenario generation challenges using the recently proposed Aviation Scenario Definition Language (ASDL). ASDL aims at providing a standard scenario specification that leads to a common mechanism for verifying and executing aviation scenarios, effective sharing of scenarios among various simulation environments, improve the consistency among different stakeholders and entities and enable the reuse of scenario specifications. Based on Domain-Specific Language (DSL) design methodologies, current version of ASDL provides a well-structured definition language to define various flight operations scenarios. The Aviation Scenario Definition Language (ASDL) has been proposed as a domain-specific language providing a well-structured definition language to specify departure, enroute, re-route, and landing scenarios. Exploiting the capabilities of Eclipse Modeling Framework (EMF), ASDL provides a holistic conceptual metamodel construct to define all entities, attributes, and relationships needed to specify a complete flight scenario. Representing scenario models graphically, increases effectiveness of communication by providing fast, easy, and accurate method of transferring information among interested parties. It is well known that graphical diagrams are more effective than text in the communication between end-users and/or domain experts. As such, models are majorly delivered graphically and supported by graphical design and editing tools. In order to provide an easy-to-use drag and drop framework to construct flight scenario models, here we present a graphical modeling and editing interface to ASDL. The proposed graphical scenario specification tool is developed using EMF Forms within EMF which provides a rapid mechanism to develop tools for modelling languages. The effort presented here will provide a graphical modeling and editing tool to specify ASDL flight scenarios while automatically validating user input and providing consistency and completeness checking. Backed by model-driven approach, the graphical modeling interface will hide all the ASDL language development details, making the tool suitable for non-developers such as pilots and air traffic controllers. This paper will include details on building the graphical framework with Eclipse Modeling Framework. We provide the detailed components of the generated GUI, highlighting the tool’s capabilities and user’s interactions. Emergencies often happen in a random and unexpected way, and operational forces must take immediate actions to reduce damages to the affected properties and people. Contextual information provides emergency response teams with an overview of the ongoing emergency and allows better decision making, such as the coordination of operational forces and resources provisioning. In this paper, we present the Emergency State Builder (ESB), acentral component we designed to aggregate contextual information about emergencies from multiple data sources with emphasis on fires, explosions, gas leaks and environmental damage incidents. The ESB is our answer to the challenge and providing timely, reliable and relevant contextual information to other components of a emergency management platform, called RESCUER, and, ultimately, to the emergency response teams. To illustrate the applicability of this work, we present how the RESCUER Public Communication module (RESCUER News) benefited from the information provided by ESB. © 2017 IEEE.
