This paper summarises the results of the Sclera Segmentation and Eye Recognition Benchmarking Competition (SSERBC 2017). It was organised in the context of the International Joint Conference on Biometrics (IJCB 2017). The aim of this competition was to record the recent developments in sclera segmentation and eye recognition in the visible spectrum (using iris, sclera and peri-ocular, and their fusion), and also to gain the attention of researchers on this subject. In this regard, we have used the Multi-Angle Sclera Dataset (MASD version 1). It is comprised of2624 images taken from both the eyes of 82 identities. Therefore, it consists of images of 164 (82×2) eyes. A manual segmentation mask of these images was created to baseline both tasks. Precision and recall based statistical measures were employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the segmentation and the ranks of the segmentation task. Recognition accuracy measure has been employed to measure the recognition task. Manually segmented sclera, iris and peri-ocular regions were used in the recognition task. Sixteen teams registered for the competition, and among them, six teams submitted their algorithms or systems for the segmentation task and two of them submitted their recognition algorithm or systems. The results produced by these algorithms or systems reflect current developments in the literature of sclera segmentation and eye recognition, employing cutting edge techniques. The MASD version 1 dataset with some of the ground truth will be freely available for research purposes. The success of the competition also demonstrates the recent interests of researchers from academia as well as industry on this subject. © 2017 IEEE.

The reduced density matrices of a many-body quantum system form a convex set, whose three-dimensional projection is convex in R3. The boundary of may exhibit nontrivial geometry, in particular ruled surfaces. Two physical mechanisms are known for the origins of ruled surfaces： symmetry breaking and gapless. In this work, we study the emergence of ruled surfaces for systems with local Hamiltonians in infinite spatial dimension, where the reduced density matrices are known to be separable as a consequence of the quantum de Finetti＇s theorem. This allows us to identify the reduced density matrix geometry with joint product numerical range II of the Hamiltonian interaction terms. We focus on the case where the interaction terms have certain structures, such that a ruled surface emerges naturally when taking a convex hull of ∏. We show that, a ruled surface on sitting in ∏ has a gapless origin, otherwise it has a symmetry breaking origin. As an example, we demonstrate that a famous ruled surface, known as the oloid, is a possible shape of , with two boundary pieces of symmetry breaking origin separated by two gapless lines.

Communication and synchronization of distributed medical models: Design, development, and performance analysis

Model-based development is a widely-used method to describe complex systems that enables the rapid prototyping. Advances in the science of distributed systems has led to the development of large scale statechart models which are distributed among multiple locations. Taking medicine for example, models of best-practice guidelines during rural ambulance transport are distributed across hospital settings from a rural hospital, to an ambulance, to a central tertiary hospital. Unfortunately, these medical models require continuous and real-time communication across individual medical models in physically distributed treatment locations which provides vital assistance to the clinicians and physicians. This makes it necessary to offer methods for model-driven communication and synchronization in a distributed environment. In this paper, we describe ModelSink, a middleware to address the problem of communication and synchronization of heterogeneous distributed models. Being motivated by the synchronization requirements during emergency ambulance transport, we use medical best-practice models as a case study to illustrate the notion of distributed models. Through ModelSink, we achieve an efficient communication architecture, open-loop-safe protocol, and queuing and mapping mechanisms compliant with the semantics of statechart-based model-driven development. We evaluated the performance of ModelSink on distributed sets of medical models that we have developed to assess how ModelSink performs in various loads. Our work is intended to assist clinicians, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), and medical staff to prevent unintended deviations from medical best practices, and overcome connectivity and coordination challenges that exist in a distributed hospital network. Our evaluations are based on real-world case studies done by research community, model-driven software industry, and hospital as the end user. The reduced density matrices （RDMs） of many-body quantum states form a convex set. The boundary of low dimensional projections of this convex set may exhibit nontrivial geometry such as ruled surfaces. In this paper, we study the physical origins of these ruled surfaces for bosonic systems. The emergence of ruled surfaces was recently proposed as signatures of symmetry- breaking phase. We show that, apart from being signatures of symmetry-brealdng, ruled surfaces can also be the consequence of gapless quantum systems by demonstrating an explicit example in terms of a two-mode Ising model. Our analysis was largely simplified by the quantum de Finetti＇s theorem--in the limit of large system size, these RDMs are the convex set of all the symmetric separable states. To distinguish ruled surfaces originated from gapless systems from those caused by symmetry- breaking, we propose to use the finite size scaling method for the corresponding geometry. This method is then applied to the two-mode XY model, successfully identifying a ruled surface as the consequence of gapless systems.

While any simulation study starts with a scenario, scenario development is usually conducted in an unstructured and ad hoc manner. In order to streamline scenario development, a formal approach is envisioned in the research flight simulator facility of German Aerospace Center (DLR), namely Air Vehicle Simulator (AVES). System Entity Structure (SES) which is a high level ontology that was introduced to specify a set of system structures and parameter settings is proposed as the foundations. The paper outlines a model-based methodology for scenario development. SES is exploited for metamodeling in order to capture all possible elements of a scenario that can be simulated in AVES. There are often concerns about the reliability of simulation results due to improper design of experiments, limited support in the execution and analysis of experiments, and lack of integrated computational frameworks for model learning through simulation experiments. Such issues result in flawed analysis as well as misdirected human and computational effort. We put forward a methodological basis, which aims to (1) explore the utility of viewing models as adaptive agents that mediate among domain theories, data, requirements, principles, and analogies, (2) underline the role of cognitive assistance for model discovery, experimentation, and evidence evaluation so as to differentiate between competing models and to attain a balance between model exploration and exploitation, and (3) examine strategies for explanatory justification of model assumptions via cognitive models that explicate coherence judgments.

Distributed coordination algorithms (DCA) carry out information processing processes among a group of networked agents without centralized information fusion. Though it is well known that DCA characterized by an SIA (stochastic, indecomposable, aperiodic) matrix generate consensus asymptotically via synchronous iterations, the dynamics of DCA with asynchronous iterations have not been studied extensively, especially when viewed as stochastic processes. This paper aims to show that for any given irreducible stochastic matrix, even non-SIA, the corresponding DCA lead to consensus successfully via random asynchronous iterations under a wide range of conditions on the transition probability. Particularly, the transition probability is neither required to be independent and identically distributed, nor characterized by a Markov chain. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), data routing is a major problem because of its quick change in topology and vehicular high mobility. VANETs are ad hoc wireless mobile networks which play important role in commercial applications and safety of public vehicular communications. The routing protocols that base on vehicular position are attracting much interest because of the availability and advancement of devices equipped with GPS. A major problem with VANETs is the frequent disruptions in the path of vehicles due to the high mobility of the participating vehicles. This can lead to the breaking of established links and result in low throughput, delay in service delivery, less overhead as well as low rate of delivery. In this paper, Using Receiver-Based Approach (URBA) is proposed. The proposed approach (URBA) compared to VANET, incorporates a potential receiver-based strategy which is traditionally better in performance and might achieve less delay in service delivery with a higher rate of delivery.

It is challenging to test data analytics software because a test oracle might not be available. This study reports our experience of applying metamorphic testing to Adobe's data analytics software that is used for anomaly detection in a set of time series data. We make use of geometric transformations to build metamorphic relations and generate simple time series data as the source test cases. The results of this study show that metamorphic testing is highly effective for both verification and validation purposes. An investigation of the issues detected during metamorphic testing revealed three bugs in the software under test.

The Gamma-Ray Integrated Detectors (GRID) is a space mission concept dedicated to monitoring the transient gamma-ray sky in the energy range from 10 keV to 2 MeV using scintillation detectors onboard CubeSats in low Earth orbits. The primary targets of GRID are the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the local universe. The scientific goal of GRID is, in synergy with ground-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors such as LIGO and VIRGO, to accumulate a sample of GRBs associated with the merger of two compact stars and study jets and related physics of those objects. It also involves observing and studying other gamma-ray transients such as long GRBs, soft gamma-ray repeaters, terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, and solar flares. With multiple CubeSats in various orbits, GRID is unaffected by the Earth occultation and serves as a full-time and all-sky monitor. Assuming a horizon of 200 Mpc for ground-based GW detectors, we expect to see a few associated GW-GRB events per year. With about 10 CubeSats in operation, GRID is capable of localizing a faint GRB like 170817A with a 90% error radius of about 10 degrees, through triangulation and flux modulation. GRID is proposed and developed by students, with considerable contribution from undergraduate students, and will remain operated as a student project in the future. The current GRID collaboration involves more than 20 institutes and keeps growing. On August 29th, the first GRID detector onboard a CubeSat was launched into a Sun-synchronous orbit and is currently under test. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.
