In the intricate matrix of cryptographic hashing, two contrasting paradigms vie for precedence: computational swiftness and resilience against specialized hardware, or ASICs. This study undertakes a meticulous exploration into these dueling priorities, juxtaposing conventional stalwarts like SHA-2 and KECCAK against the newer, ASIC-resistant X series. Leveraging detailed performance metrics and visual analytics, we discern the manifest advantage of SHA-2 and KECCAK in terms of computational alacrity. However, as the paper delves deeper, a compelling narrative unfolds. The deliberate design intricacies of the X series, despite their computational latency, emerge as robust bulwarks against potential centralization threats posed by ASIC miners. These algorithms embody a strategic deceleration, ensuring that the cryptocurrency terrain remains hospitable to a broad diaspora of miners. Through this multifaceted lens, we argue that in the cryptographic domain, raw speed is but one facet of a larger, more nuanced picture. The underlying ethos of decentralization and democratic access must guide our trajectory, even if it comes at the expense of pure efficiency. In essence, this paper endeavors to navigate the delicate balance between rapid computation and the overarching principles of an inclusive digital realm. © 2023 CEUR-WS. All rights reserved.

Brain-Controlled computer Tasks for Paralyzed Persons: Framework Overview

To bridge the digital barrier between those with disabilities and those without impairments, several applications can be operated by brain signals. It highlights the importance of employing brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and mentions a specific system called the "Brain-Controlled computer System" that can control a computer cursor and perform mouse actions using brain signals.. The system can control the cursor and provide mouse left/right click with brain signals using a low-cost Brainlink Lite device. Based on this system, we employed machine learning and deep learning methodologies to develop a system that classifies brain signals for cursor movement. The methodology involved gathering user input through surveys, interviews, and comparison studies, as well as utilizing pre-developed datasets collected using a mind sensor. We initially trained a model on a previous dataset, achieving approximately 70% accuracy. However, when applied to the new dataset, the accuracy dropped to 49%. To improve the results, we experimented with more complex models, including additional layers and a dropout layer to prevent overfitting. Despite these enhancements, the accuracy only reached a maximum of 52%. The research team collected a dataset tailored to their specific application. They made a groundbreaking discovery by applying a convolutional neural network (CNN), typically used for image analysis, to process continuous brainwave data. Despite this non-standard use, their hypothesis proved correct, with the CNN model achieving an impressive 80% accuracy in classifying brain signals for controlling a cursor.

Deep reinforcement learning has proven remarkably useful in training agents from unstructured data. However, the opacity of the produced agents makes it difficult to ensure that they adhere to various requirements posed by human engineers. In this work-in-progress report, we propose a technique for enhancing the reinforcement learning training process (specifically, its reward calculation), in a way that allows human engineers to directly contribute their expert knowledge, making the agent under training more likely to comply with various relevant constraints. Moreover, our proposed approach allows formulating these constraints using advanced model engineering techniques, such as scenario-based modeling. This mix of black-box learning-based tools with classical modeling approaches could produce systems that are effective and efficient, but are also more transparent and maintainable. Two major fundus imaging types, conventional fundus (CF) imaging and ultrawidefield fundus (UF) imaging, are widely used in ophthalmology. In a typical clinical setting, both imaging methods are used simultaneously to diagnose diseases depending on the case. This study introduced an enhanced method of modality transformation to boost the diagnostic support capabilities of deep-learning models in ophthalmology. The method proposed in this study to translate UF images (UFIs) to CF images (CFIs) can replace the common clinical approach of both imaging methods, thereby reducing financial and temporal burdens on patients. This study learns and transforms the relationship between these modalities using UFI–CFI image pairs obtained from the same patient on the same day to minimize distorted information and accurately convert between different modalities. Our proposed model uses scale-aware registration and gradient-guided translation methods to align the UFI–CFI pairs, The generated CFIs not only enhance the quality of images and better represent the retinal area compared to existing methods but also effectively preserve the disease-related details in UFIs, aiding in the diagnosis. In addition, we optimize the image transformation performance, resulting in an 22% improvement in image quality assessment scales compared with previous methods. Furthermore, we acquired the observation that our results are nearly impossible to discern any differences between the real CFIs and the generated CFIs in the view of ophthalmologists. © 2024, The Authors. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic revealed the criticality of timely intervention in a situation exacerbated by a shortage in medical staff and equipment. Pain-level screening is the initial step toward identifying the severity of patient conditions. Automatic recognition of state and feelings help in identifying patient symptoms to take immediate adequate action and providing a patient-centric medical plan tailored to a patient's state. In this paper, we propose a framework for pain-level detection for deployment in the United Arab Emirates and assess its performance using the most used approaches in the literature. Ontology-Driven software Development has emerged as a significant mechanism in creating domain-specific languages (DSLs), allowing for expressing domain concepts effectively. Once an ontology is built, it is a simple process to generate the language's metamodel and establish relationships among related concepts. However, the creation of the ontology is often a time-consuming and laborious task requiring familiarity with the domain being modeled as well as a basic understanding of ontology engineering. This paper discusses the use of natural language scenarios to create a domain ontology, which can be applied towards generating a metamodel for a DSL. A case study for aviation scenarios is presented by using increasing numbers of scenarios and comparing the models at different stages to observe the evolution of the ontology. The scenario-driven ontology developed is compared to an existing aviation ontology to understand its value. © 2020 SCS.

Accurate obstacle identification represents a fundamental challenge within the scope of near-field perception for autonomous driving. Conventionally, fisheye cameras are frequently employed for comprehensive surround-view perception, including rear-view obstacle localization. However, the performance of such cameras can significantly deteriorate in low-light conditions, during nighttime, or when subjected to intense sun glare. Conversely, cost-effective sensors like ultrasonic sensors remain largely unaffected under these conditions. Therefore, we present, to our knowledge, the first end-to-end multimodal fusion model tailored for efficient obstacle perception in a bird’s-eye-view (BEV) perspective, utilizing fisheye cameras and ultrasonic sensors. Initially, ResNeXt-50 is employed as a set of unimodal encoders to extract features specific to each modality. Subsequently, the feature space associated with the visible spectrum undergoes transformation into BEV. The fusion of these two modalities is facilitated via concatenation. At the same time, the ultrasonic spectrum-based unimodal feature maps pass through content-aware dilated convolution, applied to mitigate the sensor misalignment between two sensors in the fused feature space. Finally, the fused features are utilized by a two-stage semantic occupancy decoder to generate grid-wise predictions for precise obstacle perception. We conduct a systematic investigation to determine the optimal strategy for multimodal fusion of both sensors. We provide insights into our dataset creation procedures, annotation guidelines, and perform a thorough data analysis to ensure adequate coverage of all scenarios. When applied to our dataset, the experimental results underscore the robustness and effectiveness of our proposed multimodal fusion approach. Recent advances in single image super-resolution (SISR) have achieved remarkable performance through deep learning. However, the high computational cost hinders the deployment of SISR models on edge devices. Instead of proposing new SISR models, a new trend is emerging to improve network efficiency by reducing parameters, FLOPs, and inference time through slight modifications to the original models. However, recent methods usually focus on reducing only one of three metrics, i.e., FLOPs, parameters and inference time, which inevitably increases the other two metrics. In this paper, we propose a novel Adaptive Student Inference Network (ASIN) on popular SISR models, which aims at reducing FLOPs and inference time while maintaining the number of parameters and restoring clearer high-resolution images. Specifically, our ASIN divides a SISR model into three components (head, body and tail) and adopts various strategies for each part. For head and tail parts, to ensure the restored images contain more detailed information, a novel auxiliary Enhanced Teacher Network (ETNet) is designed, which is trained with the ground-truth images to obtain more prior knowledge to guide student network to extract more accurate textures using a new knowledge distillation method. For the body part, owing to the varying difficulties of the reconstructions in different regions, we propose an Adaptive Depth Predicted Module (ADPM) to dynamically shorten average depth of network to reduce the computational cost of overall network. Extensive experiments on two datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and state-of-the-art performance of our ASIN compared to its counterparts.

The Metaverse offers a second world beyond reality, where boundaries are non-existent, and possibilities are endless through engagement and immersive experiences using the virtual reality (VR) technology. Many disciplines can benefit from the advancement of the Metaverse when accurately developed, including the fields of technology, gaming, education, art & culture, socialization, commerce, and businesses. Nevertheless, developing the Metaverse environment to its full potential is an ambiguous task that needs proper guidance and directions. Existing surveys on the Metaverse focus only on a specific aspect and discipline of the Metaverse and lack a holistic view of the entire process. Moreover, most surveys refrain from providing detailed guidance about the development process of the metaverse, including its impact on technologies, businesses, existing challenges, and potential research directions due to their lack of a macro and micro perception of such a topic. To this end, a more holistic, multi-disciplinary, in-depth, and academic and industry-oriented review is required to provide a thorough study of the Metaverse development pipeline and fill the gap in existing Metaverse surveys. To address these issues, we present in this survey a novel multi-layered pipeline ecosystem composed of (1) the Metaverse computing, networking, communications and hardware infrastructure, (2) environment digitization, and (3) user interactions. For every layer, we discuss the components that detail the steps of its development. Also, for each of these components, we examine the impact of a set of enabling technologies and empowering domains (e.g., Artificial Intelligence, Security & Privacy, Blockchain, Business, Ethics, and Social) on its advancement. In addition, we explain the importance of these technologies to support decentralization, interoperability, user experiences, interactions, and monetization. 5G and 6G networks are expected to support various novel emerging adaptive video streaming services (e.g., live, VoD, immersive media, and online gaming) with versatile Quality of Experience (QoE) requirements such as high bitrate, low latency, and sufficient reliability. It is widely agreed that these requirements can be satisfied by adopting emerging networking paradigms like software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and edge computing. Previous studies have leveraged these paradigms to present network-assisted video streaming frameworks, but mostly in isolation without devising chains of Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) that consider the QoE requirements of various types of Multime-dia Services (MS). To bridge the aforementioned gaps, we first introduce a set of multimedia VNFs at the edge of an SDN-enabled network, form diverse Service Function Chains (SFCs) based on the QoE requirements of different MS services. We then propose SARENA, an _S_FC-enabled ArchitectuRe for adaptive VidEo StreamiNg Applications. Next, we formulate the problem as a central scheduling optimization model executed at the SDN controller. We also present a lightweight heuristic solution consisting of two phases that run on the SDN controller and edge servers to alleviate the time complexity of the optimization model in large-scale scenarios. Finally, we design a large-scale cloud-based testbed including 250 HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) players requesting two popular MS applications (i.e., live and VoD), conduct various experiments, and compare its effectiveness with baseline systems. Experimental results illustrate that SARENA outperforms baseline schemes in terms of users' QoE by at least 39.6%, latency by 29.3%, and network utilization by 30% in both MS services.
