In this paper I describe an ongoing multi-stage, participatory design study with individuals with cognitive disabilities and their family caregivers. I use a technology probe to inspire families to co-design a picture-based remote communication system. The technology platform is a *** phone.. I will present early findings from this study and discuss how it was a successful approach to engage with individuals with significant cognitive disabilities as co-designers of their own technology.

A surprisingly high percentage of assistive technology devices (35% or more) are purchased, but not successfully adopted. Through semi-structured interviews with a dozen families, we have come to understand the role technology plays in the lives of families who have a young adult with cognitive disabilities, and how families find, acquire, and use these technologies. This study addresses gaps in existing research and informs future efforts in assistive technology design. design implications include the importance of simplicity not only in technology function but in configuration, documentation, maintenance, and upgrade or replacement;as well as the need for designers to use methods that consider the multiple individuals and stages involved in the technology adoption process. Welcome to the CHI 2006 Extended Abstracts. We hope that you will enjoy this year's extended abstracts and the changes that we have made. For the first time this year, we encouraged submissions from six different sub-communities of the human-computer interaction (HCI) field: design;education;engineering;management;research and usability. The intent was to make sure that the technical program included elements that would be of interest to the broad HCI world. We especially sought Experience Reports, Panels, SIGs, and HCI Overviews. Submissions to each of these were carefully reviewed by the Conference Committee and their respective Community Chairs. These Extended Abstracts include these new or modified venues as well as materials from other traditional CHI venues.

In this paper, we extend the observer/control strategies previously published in [25] to an n -link, serially connected, direct drive, rigid link, revolute robot operating in the presence of nonlinear friction effects modeled by the Lu-Gre model. In addition, we also present a new adaptive control technique for compensating for the nonlinear parameterizable Stribeck effects. Specifically, an adaptive observer/controller scheme is developed which contains a feedforward approximation of the Stribeck effects. This feedforward approximation is used in a composite controller/observer strategy which forces the average square integral of the position tracking error to an arbitrarily small value. Experimental results are included to illustrate the performance of the proposed controllers.

Making learning part of life is an essential challenge for inventing the future of our societies. Lifelong learning is a necessity rather than a possibility or a luxury to be considered. Self-directed learning (often occurring as learning on demand in response to breakdowns) is the dominant form of lifelong learning. The power of the unaided individual mind is highly overrated. Although society often thinks of creative individuals as working in isolation, learning and creativity result in large part from the interaction and collaboration with other individuals. Much human creativity is social, and learning communities are needed to cope with the challenges of making learning part of life. This paper articulates existing problems in our current and future world requiring lifelong and self-directed learning and learning communities. It defines conceptual frameworks and it describes four innovative computational environments: (1) domain-oriented design environments, (2) critiquing systems, (3) the Envisionment and Discovery Collaboratory, and (4) Caretta. The paper concludes by providing a set of challenges for the future use of technology to enhance learning based on the conceptual frameworks and the experience and assessment of our system development efforts.

We propose a fast and robust approach to the detection and tracking of moving objects. Our method is based on using lines computed by a gradient-based optical flow and an edge detector. While it is known among researchers that gradient-based optical flow and edges are well matched for accurate computation of velocity, not much attention is paid to creating systems for detecting and tracking objects using this feature. In our method, extracted edges by using optical flow and the edge detector are restored as lines, and background lines of the previous frame are subtracted. Contours of objects are obtained by using snakes to clustered lines. Detected objects are tracked, and each tracked object has a state for handling occlusion and interference. The experimental results on outdoor-scenes show fast and robust performance of our method. The computation time of our method is 0.089 s/frame on a 900 MHz processor.

The development of an educational interface for hands-on student experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for undergraduate and engineering courses and laboratories is discussed. The design of the educational interface teaches students CFD methodology and procedures through interactive implementation that automates the CFD process following a step-by-step approach. Generalizations of CFD for pipe, nozzle and airfoil flows facilitate their use at different universities with different applications, conditions and exercise notes. Evaluation indicates areas of strength and strategies for improvements and more effective implementation.

Informed participation is an approach for community-based learning and design in which all participants actively contribute toward the framing and solving of complex and multidisciplinary problems. Informed participants go beyond the information given to explore large problem spaces, learn from their peers, and create new understandings. Informed participation requires social changes as well as new interactive systems that provide the opportunity and resources for social debate and discussion rather than merely delivering predigested information to participants. This paper describes courses-as-seeds as an application of informed participation to university-level courses. This application demonstrates key aspects of our approach and highlights direction for future research.
