The reality of the current academic climate, in particular faced with drops in enrollment over the next decade as a result from drops in birth rates, is forcing hard choices for small programs such as the modeling simulation Engineering (MSE) program at Old Dominion University (ODU). The quality of the program and its benefit to its constituents do not offset the impracticality of continuing such programs. Two primary options for such programs are closure or consolidation. ODU decided on the latter course of action for MSE. Due to the computational nature of the existing program, a decision was made to place MSE as a major under the computer Engineering degree. This paper presents the justification for this decision and the resulting curriculum and the hard decisions made to allow it to fit under computer engineering. A discussion of feedback from constituents such as the industrial advisory board for the existing MSE program is included. © 2021 IEEE.

Consensus control in multi-agent systems has received significant attention and practical implementation across various domains. However, managing consensus control under unknown dynamics remains a significant challenge for control design due to system uncertainties and environmental disturbances. This paper presents a novel learning-based distributed control law, augmented by an auxiliary dynamics. Gaussian processes are harnessed to compensate for the unknown components of the multi-agent system. For continuous enhancement in predictive performance of Gaussian process model, a data-efficient online learning strategy with a decentralized event-triggered mechanism is proposed. Furthermore, the control performance of the proposed approach is ensured via the Lyapunov theory, based on a probabilistic guarantee for prediction error bounds. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed learning-based controller, a comparative analysis is conducted, contrasting it with both conventional distributed control laws and offline learning methodologies. Optimizing control strategies for monkeypox through mathematical modeling

Monkeypox is a zoonotic viral disease similar to smallpox, has emerged as a major global health concern following the COVID-19 pandemic. This study presents a novel mathematical model aimed at analyzing various epidemiological factors, particularly the less-explored transmission from humans to monkeys, where both species act as carriers. Our approach integrates comprehensive awareness campaigns, strict security measures, and targeted health interventions to limit transmission between hosts, with the goal of reducing human infections and eliminating the virus among animal populations. The model utilizes the continuous-time Pontryagin maximum principle to determine and apply optimal control strategies, with iterative simulations conducted in Matlab. Our results, derived from these simulations, show that implementing all proposed preventative strategies—such as public awareness efforts, isolation of infected monkeys, and vaccination—simultaneously is the most effective method to control the virus's spread. We observed a significant reduction in both human and animal infections when these strategies were combined. The study's conclusions provide important insights into the transmission dynamics of monkeypox, highlighting the critical role of multifaceted intervention strategies in controlling outbreaks. These findings are expected to support more effective public health management and contribute to the global effort to contain and ultimately eradicate monkeypox. © 2024 The Authors

Millimeter wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) communication protocols employ extensive antenna arrays to ensure reliable signal reception. However, aligning these narrow beams incurs a significant cost in beam training, which increases proportionally with the number of antennas. While beam prediction methods based on semantics from the RGB images demonstrate initial feasibility, they are still low on accuracy. Motivated by the fact that the recently introduced Segment Anything Model (SAM) can generate very accurate masks, which can be considered semantic information in this domain, this study proposes a beam prediction solution based on the masks of SAM. The SAM can extract more accurate semantic data from visual sources. Then instead of using the RGB images directly, the semantics images have been used to predict the beamforming vector using a lightweight LeNet5 model. The experimental results show that the SAM-based proposed method can perform significantly better than the two state-of-the-art deep learning models. The proposed solution method can achieve near 100% in top-5 beam prediction accuracy in real-world communication scenarios.

The paper presents integration of fuzzy logic into adaptation mechanism of Luenberger observer for sensorless pulse width modulation-direct torque controlled (PWM-DTC) induction motor (IM) drive. At first, DTC strategy and PWM technique are described. Next, basic mathematical model for state representation, adaptive signal and proportional-integral (PI) adaptation mechanism of Luenberger observer is shown. However, the PI adaptation mechanism cannot ensure desired motor speed responses in both dynamic and steady-state operations of IM drive. Fuzzy logic control theory is added to overcome the disadvantage of PI adaptation mechanism via update proportional gain and integral constant time of PI controller. simulations of sensorless control for two adaptation mechanisms are carried out at different reference speeds. Speed deviations are utilized to evaluate the performance of two adaptation mechanisms at both dynamic and steady-state operations. Explainable Deep Learning for Tumor Dynamic modeling and Overall Survival Prediction using Neural-ODE

While tumor dynamic modeling has been widely applied to support the development of oncology drugs, there remains a need to increase predictivity, enable personalized therapy, and improve decision-making. We propose the use of Tumor Dynamic Neural-ODE (TDNODE) as a pharmacology-informed neural network to enable model discovery from longitudinal tumor size data. We show that TDNODE overcomes a key limitation of existing models in its ability to make unbiased predictions from truncated data. The encoder-decoder architecture is designed to express an underlying dynamical law which possesses the fundamental property of generalized homogeneity with respect to time. Thus, the modeling formalism enables the encoder output to be interpreted as kinetic rate metrics, with inverse time as the physical unit. We show that the generated metrics can be used to predict patients’ overall survival (OS) with high accuracy. This study explores the stabilization of state–space fractional derivatives in semilinear distributed systems, using the Riemann–Liouville derivative of order α, where α lies within the interval 0,1. The main objective is to develop effective feedback control strategies that ensure both strong and weak stabilization of fractional outputs. Additionally, we tackle a fractional minimization problem to enhance the system's performance. A numerical simulation example is provided to demonstrate the practical significance of the proposed stabilization theorems. © 2024 The Author(s)
