This paper presents a state estimation-based robust optimal control strategy for influenza epidemics in an interactive human society in the presence of modeling uncertainties. Interactive society is influenced by random entrance of individuals from other human societies whose effects can be modeled as a non-Gaussian noise. Since only the number of exposed and infected humans can be measured, states of the influenza epidemics are first estimated by an extended maximum correntropy Kalman filter (EMCKF) to provide a robust state estimation in the presence of the non-Gaussian noise. An online quadratic program (QP) optimization is then synthesized subject to a robust control Lyapunov function (RCLF) to minimize susceptible and infected humans, while minimizing and bounding the rates of vaccination and antiviral treatment. The joint QP-RCLF-EMCKF meets multiple design specifications such as state estimation, tracking, pointwise control optimality, and robustness to parameter uncertainty and state estimation errors that have not been achieved simultaneously in previous studies. The uniform ultimate boundedness (UUB)/convergence of error trajectories is guaranteed using a Lyapunov stability argument. The soundness of the proposed approach is validated on the influenza epidemics of an interactive human society with population of 16000. simulation results show that the QP-RCLF-EMCKF achieves appropriate tracking and state estimation performance. Robustness of the proposed controller is finally illustrated in the presence of modeling error and non-Gaussian noise. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The increasing popularity and diversity of online social networks (OSNs) have attracted more and more people to participate in multiple OSNs. Learning users' behavior and information diffusion across platforms is critical for cyber threat detection, but it is still a challenge due to the surge of users participating in multiple social platforms. Existing research on profile matching requires user identity information to be available, which may not be realistic. Little prior research payed attention to mapping behavioral patterns across platforms. We designed and implemented an efficient two-level probabilistic approach called CrossSimON to mapping user-group behavior across platforms. CrossSimON considers the activity level and network position at both individual user level and group level to correlate activities across social platforms. To evaluate the effectiveness of CrossSimON in modeling social activity across platforms, we conducted experiments on three online social platforms: GitHub, Reddit and Twitter. Our experimental results show that CrossSimON outperformed the Benchmark in 3 out of 5 simulation metrics. CrossSimON achieved better performance in user activity prediction. The research provides new strategy for cross-platform online social network simulation, and new findings on simulating OSNs and predictive analytics for understanding online social network behavior. © 2019 IEEE.

Multimodal transformer with multi-view visual representation for image captioning

Image captioning aims to automatically generate a natural language description of a given image, and most state-ofthe-art models have adopted an encoder-decoder framework. The framework consists of a convolution neural network (CNN)-based image encoder that extracts region-based visual features from the input image, and an recurrent neural network (RNN)-based caption decoder that generates the output caption words based on the visual features with the attention mechanism. Despite the success of existing studies, current methods only model the co-attention that characterizes the inter-modal interactions while neglecting the self-attention that characterizes the intramodal interactions. Inspired by the success of the Transformer model in machine translation, here we extend it to a Multimodal Transformer (MT) model for image captioning. Compared to existing image captioning approaches, the MT model simultaneously captures intra- and inter-modal interactions in a unified attention block. Due to the in-depth modular composition of such attention blocks, the MT model can perform complex multimodal reasoning and output accurate captions. Moreover, to further improve the image captioning performance, multi-view visual features are seamlessly introduced into the MT model. We quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate our approach using the benchmark MSCOCO image captioning dataset and conduct extensive ablation studies to investigate the reasons behind its effectiveness. The experimental results show that our method significantly outperforms the previous state-of-the-art methods. With an ensemble of seven models, our solution ranks the 1st place on the real-time leaderboard of the MSCOCO image captioning challenge at the time of the writing of this paper. Visual Question Answering (VQA) requires a finegrained and simultaneous understanding of both the visual content of images and the textual content of questions. Therefore, designing an effective 'co-attention' model to associate key words in questions with key objects in images is central to VQA performance. So far, most successful attempts at co-attention learning have been achieved by using shallow models, and deep co-attention models show little improvement over their shallow counterparts. In this paper, we propose a deep Modular Co-Attention Network (MCAN) that consists of Modular Co-Attention (MCA) layers cascaded in depth. Each MCA layer models the self-attention of questions and images, as well as the question-guided-attention of images jointly using a modular composition of two basic attention units. We quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate MCAN on the benchmark VQA-v2 dataset and conduct extensive ablation studies to explore the reasons behind MCAN's effectiveness. Experimental results demonstrate that MCAN significantly outperforms the previous state-of-the-art. Our best single model delivers 70.63% overall accuracy on the test-dev set.

We present an atomic-scale mechanism based on variable-range hopping of interacting charges enabling reconfigurable logic and nonlinear classification tasks in dopant network processing units in silicon. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of the hopping process show temperature-dependent current-voltage characteristics, artificial evolution of basic Boolean logic gates, and fitness-dependent gate abundances in striking agreement with experiment. The simulations provide unique insights in the local electrostatic potential and current flow in the dopant network, showing subtle changes induced by control voltages that set the conditions for the logic operation. These insights will be crucial in the systematic further development of this burgeoning technology for unconventional computing. Emergency training and planning provide structured curricula, rule-based action items, and interdisciplinary collaborative entities to imitate and teach real-life tasks. This rule-based structure enables the curricula to be transferred into other systematic learning platforms such as serious games - games that have additional purposes rather than only entertainment. Serious games aim to educate, cure, and plan several real-life tasks and circumstances in an interactive, efficient, and user-friendly way. Although emergency training includes these highly structured and repetitive action responses, a general framework to map the training scenarios' actions, roles, and collaborative structures to game mechanics and game dialogues, is still not available. To address this issue, in this study, a scenario-based game generator, which maps domain-oriented tasks to game rules and game mechanics, was developed. Also, two serious games (i.e., Hospital game and BioGarden game) addressing the training mechanisms of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNe) domain, were developed by both the game developers and the scenario-based game generator for comparative analysis. The results show that although the game generator uses higher CPU time, memory usage, and rendering time, it highly outperforms the game development pipeline performance of the developers. Thus, this study is an initial attempt of a game generator which bridges the CBRNe practitioners and game developers to transform real-life training scenarios into video games efficiently and quickly. On exploring undetermined relationships for visual relationship detection

In visual relationship detection, human-notated relationships can be regarded as determinate relationships. However, there are still large amount of unlabeled data, such as object pairs with less significant relationships or even with no relationships. We refer to these unlabeled but potentially useful data as undetermined relationships. Although a vast body of literature exists, few methods exploit these undetermined relationships for visual relationship detection. In this paper, we explore the beneficial effect of undetermined relationships on visual relationship detection. We propose a novel multi-modal feature based undetermined relationship learning network (MF-URLN) and achieve great improvements in relationship detection. In detail, our MF-URLN automatically generates undetermined relationships by comparing object pairs with human-notated data according to a designed criterion. Then, the MF-URLN extracts and fuses features of object pairs from three complementary modals: Visual, spatial, and linguistic modals. Further, the MF-URLN proposes two correlated subnetworks: One subnetwork decides the determinate confidence, and the other predicts the relationships. We evaluate the MF-URLN on two datasets: The Visual Relationship Detection (VRD) and the Visual Genome (VG) datasets. The experimental results compared with state-of-the-art methods verify the significant improvements made by the undetermined relationships, e.g., the top-50 relation detection recall improves from 19.5% to 23.9% on the VRD dataset. As the rapid growth of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) and 5G intensifies, more third-party applications are increasingly being deployed on CAVs. They not only improve user experience but also provide more helpful services, for example, enhancing public safety by recognizing criminals in real-time videos. Current CAVs prefer to process collected data on the vehicle to avoid long transmission latency and extra network cost. However, due to the limitations of the on-board vehicle computing unit (VCU) and increasing use of computing-intensive in-vehicle applications, the burden of on-board VCU has sharply increased, which may affect driving safety. In particular, for existing vehicles on the road, adding more computing devices is a challenge if not impossible due to cost concerns. Inspired by edge computing, we propose a novel platform, MobileEdge, to enhance the computing capability of the unchangeable on-board VCU, which leverages mobile devices as edge nodes, e.g., the passengers' smartphones, by offloading computing tasks to them for collaboratively computing. Moreover, MobileEdge provides the dynamic management of mobile devices, monitoring device status and interfaces for customizable task offloading strategies and eventually achieves optimal task scheduling. We build a prototype to demonstrate the designed platform and evaluate three task offloading strategies which were implemented based on the developed interfaces. The results show that MobileEdge significantly reduces the application response latency. Compared with the baseline which does not employ task offloading, the response latency is almost near real-time when more computing resources are available. In addition, the proposed shortest response latency strategy outperforms the best overall task scheduling among the three strategies.

DRAM is a significant source of server power consumption especially when the server runs memory intensive applications. Current power aware scheduling assumes that DRAM is as energy proportional as other components. However, the non-energy proportionality of DRAM significantly affects the power and energy consumption of the whole server system when running memory intensive applications. Thus good knowledge of server power characterization under memory intensive workloads can help better workload placement with power reduction. In this paper, we investigate the power characteristics of memory intensive applications on real rack servers of different generations. Through comprehensive analysis we find that (1) Server power consumption changes with workload intensity and concurrent execution threads. However, fully utilized memory systems are not the most energy efficient. (2) Powered memory modules of installed memory capacity, i.e. the memory capacity per processor core has significant impact on the application’s performance and server power consumption even if the memory system is not fully utilized. (3) Memory utilization is not always a good indicator for server power consumption when it is running memory intensive applications. Our experiments show that hardware configuration, workload types, as well as concurrently running threads have significant impact on a server’s energy efficiency when running memory intensive applications. Our findings presented in this paper provide useful insights and guidance to system designers, as well as data center operators for energy efficiency aware job scheduling and power reductions. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
