simulation studies are intricate processes in which model building, model refinement, and a wide variety of simulation experiments are typically closely intertwined to achieve the objective of the simulation study. To (semi-)automatically support this process, the central artifacts of a simulation study, such as simulation models and simulation experiments, need to be made explicit and accessible. Furthermore, the relations between the artifacts as well as their context (e.g., the objectives, data sources, and requirements) have to be made explicit in an unambiguous manner. If this information is enriched by knowledge about modeling and simulation approaches or specific application domains, interpretation and reuse of the various (intermediate) artifacts and activities are facilitated even more. The resulting information can then be exploited to assist modelers in selecting and conducting the subsequent simulation experiments, which we demonstrate using a cell biological simulation study.

Recent developments in modeling language and vision have been successfully applied to image question answering. It is both crucial and natural to extend this research direction to the video domain for video question answering (VideoQA). Compared to the image domain where large scale and fully annotated benchmark datasets exists, VideoQA datasets are limited to small scale and are automatically generated, etc. These limitations restrict their applicability in practice. Here we introduce ActivityNet-QA, a fully annotated and large scale VideoQA dataset. The dataset consists of 58,000 QA pairs on 5,800 complex web videos derived from the popular ActivityNet dataset. We present a statistical analysis of our ActivityNet-QA dataset and conduct extensive experiments on it by comparing existing VideoQA baselines. Moreover, we explore various video representation strategies to improve VideoQA performance, especially for long videos. The dataset is available at https://***/MILVLG/ activitynet-qa. Phoenix, an Active Management Area in the desert Southwest US, is the 5 th most populated city in the US. Scarce local groundwater and water transported from external resources must be managed in the presence of different types of energy sources. Local and regional decision-makers are faced with answering challenging questions on managing water, energy supply, and demand over a few years to several decades. Prediction and planning for the interdependency of these entities can benefit from modeling the water and energy systems as well as their interactions with one another. In this paper, the integrated WEAP and LEAP tools and a modeling framework that externalizes their hidden linkage to an interaction model are described and compared using the Phoenix AMA. Loose coupling enabled by interaction modeling is a key for decision-policies that should be grounded at the nexus of the water-energy system of systems.

We present a numeric method to compute the safe operating flight conditions for a helicopter such that we can ensure a safe landing in the event of a partial or total engine failure. The unsafe operating region is the complement of the backwards reachable tube, which can be found as the sub-zero level set of the viscosity solution of a Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) equation. Traditionally, numerical methods used to solve the HJ equation rely on a discrete grid of the solution space and exhibit exponential scaling with dimension, which is problematic for the high-fidelity dynamics models required for accurate helicopter modeling. We avoid the use of spatial grids by formulating a trajectory optimization problem, where the solution at each initial condition can be computed in a computationally efficient manner. The proposed method is shown to compute an autonomous landing trajectory from any operating condition, even in non-cruise flight conditions. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Learning an effective attention mechanism for multimodal data is important in many vision-and-language tasks that require a synergic understanding of both the visual and textual contents. Existing state-of-the-art approaches use co-attention models to associate each visual object (e.g., image region) with each textual object (e.g., query word). Despite the success of these co-attention models, they only model inter-modal interactions while neglecting intra-modal interactions. Here we propose a general 'unified attention' model that simultaneously captures the intra- and inter-modal interactions of multimodal features and outputs their corresponding attended representations. By stacking such unified attention blocks in depth, we obtain the deep Multimodal Unified Attention Network (MUAN), which can seamlessly be applied to the visual question answering (VQA) and visual grounding tasks. We evaluate our MUAN models on two VQA datasets and three visual grounding datasets, and the results show that MUAN achieves top level performance on both tasks without bells and whistles. In this paper, an SIR spatiotemporal epidemic model is formulated as a system of parabolic partial differential equations with no-flux boundary conditions. Immunity is forced through vaccine distribution considered a control variable. Our principal objective is to characterize an optimal control that minimizes the number of infected individuals and the costs associated with vaccination over a finite space and time domain. The existence of solutions to the state system and the existence of an optimal control is proved. An optimal control characterization in terms of state and adjoint functions is provided. Furthermore, a second condition of optimality is given. The optimality systems are solved based on an iterative discrete scheme that converges following an appropriate test similar the one related to the forward–backward sweep method. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of our approach for several scenarios. © 2016, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The first goal of this research is to set improved spatiotemporal discrete Lotlka–Volterra model including n different species which occupy three dimensional area Ω and obey to any complex marine food chain. The area Ω is partitioned into R subregions, each subregion includes at least two species, and each species can occupy more than one subregion. The next concern is to increase production of special species which survive in a target subregion, taking into account the financial cost and the severe consequences on the environment. So, we propose two different approaches: optimal farming intra-subregion and optimal farming inter-subregions. One the one hand, we develop optimal program of farming intra-subregion in order to rise the growth rate of the concerned species. On the other hand, we aim to protect the concerned species by optimal adjustment of grids constituting the submersible cage in order to control the local interaction between the target subregion and its neighboring subregions. To the best of our knowledge, it’s the first time when permeability of submersible cages will be modeled and introduced in predator–prey models. To end, adequate numerical illustrations are implemented and discussed to prove the effectiveness of each approach. © 2017, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method using the generalized-gradient approximation (GGA) and the local density approximation (LDA) within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) is applied to the study of structural, elastic, electronic and thermal properties of CeScSi-type GdTiGe and CeFeSi-type GdTiSi intermetallic compounds. Elastic constants are calculated to investigate stability criteria and the mechanical nature of the studied materials. Both compounds are found to be mechanically anisotropic, and ductile, and meet the elastic stability criteria. To complete the fundamental characteristics of both compounds, we have analyzed the thermodynamic properties using the quasi-harmonic Debye model. The obtained results are in a favorable agreement with available experimental and theoretical data. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is driving transformative changes across numerous fields, revolutionizing conventional processes and creating new opportunities for innovation. The development of mechatronic systems is undergoing a similar transformation. Over the past decade, modeling, simulation, and optimization techniques have become integral to the design process, paving the way for the adoption of AI-based methods. In this paper, we examine the potential for integrating AI into the engineering design process, using the V-model from the VDI guideline 2206, considered the state-of-the-art in product design, as a foundation. We identify and classify AI methods based on their suitability for specific stages within the engineering product design workflow. Furthermore, we present a series of application examples where AI-assisted design has been successfully implemented by the authors. These examples, drawn from research projects within the DFG Priority Program SPP 2353: Daring More Intelligence - Design Assistants in Mechanics and Dynamics, showcase a diverse range of applications across mechanics and mechatronics, including areas such as acoustics and robotics. © 2024, CC BY.
