Markov population models (MPMs) are a widely used modelling formalism in the area of computational biology and related areas. The semantics of a MPM is an infinite-state continuous-time Markov chain. In this paper, we use the established continuous stochastic logic (CSL) to express properties of Markov population models. This allows us to express important measures of biological systems, such as probabilistic reachability, survivability, oscillations, switching times between attractor regions, and various others. Because of the infinite state space, available analysis techniques only apply to a very restricted subset of CSL properties. We present a full algorithm for model checking CSL for MPMs, and provide experimental evidence showing that our method is effective. © 2014 D. Spieler, E. M. Hahn & L. Zhang.

Production of electricity and propulsion systems involve turbulent combustion. Computational modeling of turbulent combustion can improve the efficiency of these processes. However, large tensor datasets are the result of such simulations;these datasets are difficult to visualize and analyze. In this work we present an unsupervised statistical approach for the segmentation, visualization and potentially the tracking of regions of interest in large tensor data. The approach employs a machine learning clustering algorithm to locate and identify areas of interest based on specified parameters such as strain tensor value. Evaluation on two combustion datasets shows this approach can assist in the visual analysis of the combustion tensor field. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

The paper presents the motion simulation of a Wing in Ground craft with a Lippisch configuration which is stable in terms of static stability. The influence of wind and wave perturbations on the dynamic stability of the flight are investigated. The analysis of safety and stability used two different approaches. Based on frequency domain simulation, the first approach derived from the classical stability theory utilizes the aerodynamic coefficients and their linearized derivatives. The second approach based on time domain simulation uses the coefficients with full respect to the nonlinear character of aerodynamics in ground effect. The trajectory is used to evaluate the dynamic stability and flight safety of the craft. From the results for typical perturbations, the limitations of the classical stability theory for the flight safety of Wing in Ground craft are shown. The results show the necessity of the automatic control system even for a satisfying stable craft predicted by the linear theory. The demand of high performance together with the hard constraints for states and control inputs are challenging for the controller design. A proportional-integral-derivative controller is studied to secure the flight safety of small craft under different perturbation and a methodology for designing a control system for operation under various weather conditions is illustrated. Most previous studies involving public goods games are investigated under a simplifying assumption that participators are compulsive in collective interactions and contribute unconditionally to the public pool. Nevertheless, how the conditional investment mechanism based on individual's reputation affects the evolution of cooperation in structured populations is still unclear. Here we introduce a reputation-based conditional investment rule for constituting participant groups into spatial threshold public goods game, where the public goods game can be conducted only if the participant number is not less than the threshold parameter. Interestingly, we find that large threshold parameter results in the optimal environment for cooperators' viability.

The high level of complexity in modern construction projects causes a-priori project schedules to be highly sensitive to delays in the involved processes. At underground construction sites the earthwork processes are very vital, as most of the following tasks depend on it. This paper presents a novel method for tracking the progress of earthwork processes by combing two technologies based on computer vision: photogrammetry and video analysis. While the former is applied to determine the volume of the excavated soil in regular intervals, the latter is used to generate statistics regarding the construction activities, such as loading times and idle times. Combining these two data sources allows exact measurement of the productivity of the machinery and determining site-specific performance factors. Most importantly, reasons for low productivity - such as an insufficient number of trucks - can be identified easily. The paper presents in detail the vision-based techniques applied and the methods used for combining both data sources. The suitability of the approach has been proved by an extensive case study - a real-world excavation project in Munich, Germany.

Dental implantation is now recognized as a standard of care for replacing missing teeth. Pre-operative planning with patient-specific images provides the basis for precise surgery, but such accuracy is hampered to some degree because of the manual drilling procedures performed by the surgeon. In this paper, a robotic system for automated site preparation for dental implants is presented in order to provide high accuracy drilling. The results of some experiments are given to validate the system. Additionally, results are shown for jaw surgery that utilize natural-root-formed implants which can contain multiple roots. This more complex type of implant is impossible to drill manually but can provide better long-term stability and success. With this robotic system, controlled and accurate drilling was achieved, which made more advanced implant designs possible. © 2014 Informa UK Ltd.

A method is proposed to whiten 1-f-type background noise in electroencephalogram data by a nonlinear spectral transformation from the frequency domain to a newly-defined ∝-pitch domain. Based on the α-pitch spectra of steady-state visual evoked potentials, an algorithm called octave-averaged spectral rectification is applied which simultaneously attenuates 1-f noise while enhancing resonance peaks. This has important potential benefits for gamma-band brain-computer interfaces.

A Preliminary Study on Rainfall Pattern before and after the January 26, 2001 Bhuj Earthquake (<i>M<sub>w</sub></i>7.7) over Kachchh Region of Western Peninsular, India

Under the influence of great debate on relation between earthquake and rainfall, some scientists have carried out detailed study and now commonly accepted that heavy rainfall can trigger earthquake at the faults or fractures depending upon the local geology. Here, an attempt is made to check relation between earthquake and rainfall with different scientific approaches. We have attempted to critically examine the relation between the Bhuj earthquake-aftershocks sequence and the rainfall pattern over the region as large earthquake (Mw 7.7) has occurred on January 26, 2001 in Kachchh region of western peninsular shield of India and the aftershocks are being reported till the date. We have analyzed rainfall data for 20 years, i.e. 10 years before and 10 years after the main shock of January 26, 2001, recorded by three meteorological observatories in the Kachchh region. We have studied annual total rainfall for two decades, annual rainfall departures from the climate normals, number of rainy days and number of heavy rainfall days during the period for all the three meteorological observatories of Kachchh region. We have found significant increase in all the measured rainfall parameters i.e. annual total rainfall, number of rainy days and number of heavy rainfall days over the Kachchh region during last decade i.e., from 2001 to 2010 after the main shock. Numbers of negative departures have been decreased during the last decade compared to previous decade. Thus rainfall pattern over Kachchh region is being changed. This increase in rainfall activity over Kachchh region may have been influenced by large earthquake and continuing aftershock activities over the region.

This paper presents in-plane crack problem in piezoelectric semiconductors under a transient thermal load. General boundary conditions and sample geometry are allowed in the proposed formulation. The governing partial differential equations for stresses, electric displacement field and current are satisfied in a local weak-form on small fictitious subdomains. All field quantities are approximated by the moving least-squares (MLS) scheme. After performing the spatial integrations, one obtains a system of ordinary differential equations for certain nodal unknowns. The influence of initial electron density on the intensity factors and energy release rate is investigated.

Recent studies show that the market share of smartphones continues to grow with over 60 percent U.S. mobile subscribers owning smartphones as of December 2013. Smartphones have matured as a computing platform and are now equipped with multiple low-energy sensors including gyroscope, compass, accelerometer, proximity sensor, and ambient light sensor. Even though researchers used data from cell phones before, they relied on GPS which has the disadvantages of low accuracy in urban canyons and depleting the phone battery quickly. In this paper, we use accelerometer data for inferring whether a vehicle is in motion or stopping (e.g., at a traffic light). Pattern recognition models are developed and tested with data collected from the field. The results show that stops can be effectively identified, with a limited number of false alarms. The developed techniques can support various applications including traffic monitoring, signal timing optimization, and emission prediction.
