In this paper, we investigate the implementation of the Block Conjugate Gradient (BCG) algorithm on CPU-GPU processors. By analyzing the performance of various matrix operations in BCG, we identify the main performance bottleneck in constructing new search direction matrices. Replacing the QR decomposition by eigendecomposition of a small matrix remedies the problem by reducing the computational cost of generating orthogonal search directions. Moreover, a hybrid (offload) computing scheme is designed to enables the BCG implementation to handle linear systems with large, sparse coefficient matrices that cannot fit in the GPU memory. The hybrid scheme offloads matrix operations to GPU processors while helps hide the CPU-GPU memory transaction overhead. We compare the performance of our BCG implementation with the one on CPU with Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors using the automatic offload mode. With sufficient number of right hand sides, the CPU-GPU implementation of BCG can reach speedup of 2.61 over the CPU-only implementation, which is significantly higher than that of the CPU-Intel Xeon Phi implementation.

Block level storage system has been widely used as it can provide users raw block device. On the basis of Orthrus system, this paper designs and implements a multiple volume servers block level storage system based on load-balanced strategy-Orthrus Plus. This system uses the dynamic load-balanced strategy based on genetic algorithm strategy to load balance the volume servers clusters and proposes an iSCSI pause and resume method to solve the breakpoint retransmission problem during load-balancing. At last, we design a hierarchical management mechanism based on volume life cycle at storage. Experiments show that the load balancing capability in Orthrus Plus is more accurate and efficient under the situation of larger amount of data, and the hierarchical storage strategy also increases the I/O throughout capacity. © 2013 SERSC.

Surgical simulators can avail minimizing the risk of surgery and help achieving a better outcome. This is also the case for the Nuss procedure, a minimally invasive surgery for correcting pectus excavatum (PE)-A congenital chest wall deformity. A simulator can be of great benefit if it provides realistic behavior and representation of the actual surgery. In this paper, we address various clinical aspects of the procedure for a training simulation, reproducing a virtual model of the patient's thoracic cavity and internal organs with realistic textures, as well as physical behaviors. In addition, a high fidelity haptic force feedback system is constructed to provide the surgeon with a close-to-real sensation while interacting with the virtual model. © 2014 The authors and IOS Press. This numerical study is based on the non linear dynamics consociated with synthetic jet with co-existence of circular cylinder. The time dependent fluid interaction, of two dimensional Synthetic Jet Actuator (SJA) is inspected using in-compressible Navier-Stokes equations. To exactly compute the flow due to synthetic jet, the pulsed diaphragm is designed as a moving boundary in a pragmatic mode. The parametric study has been systematized for various sweeps of the diaphragm amplitude and actuation frequency. Performance characteristics and vortex dynamics of the jet extracts interesting flow physics associated with these parameters. The unsteady actuation is able to influence the intrinsic instabilities of separating flows by controlling at lower frequencies. In the current study a detailed parametric study of a simplified configuration is investigated in order to diminution the drag.

Deterministic replay of a parallel application is commonly used for discovering bugs or to recover from a hard fault with message-logging fault tolerance. For message passing programs, a major source of overhead during forward execution is recording the order in which messages are sent and received. During replay, this ordering must be used to deterministically reproduce the execution. Previous work in replay algorithms often makes minimal assumptions about the programming model and application to maintain generality. However, in many applications, only a partial order must be recorded due to determinism intrinsic in the program, ordering constraints imposed by the execution model, and events that are commutative (their relative execution order during replay does not need to be reproduced exactly). In this paper, we present a novel algebraic framework for reasoning about the minimum dependencies required to represent the partial order for different orderings and interleavings. By exploiting this framework, we improve on an existing scalable message-logging fault tolerance scheme that uses a total order. The improved scheme scales to 131,072 cores on an IBM BlueGene/P with up to 2× lower overhead.

With the advent of the information age, the data volumes of various industries are in explosive growth, which increasingly highlights the importance of data. When a disaster occurs, how to recover the data completely and rapidly is one of the important issues receiving common concerns throughout the current industrial and academic circles. Based on the traditional disaster recovery system, this paper researches and implements a PRS algorithm-based distributed disaster recovery system[1, 2] called OsnDDR, which ensures the high availability of the system under the circumstance of continuous disasters or multi-node damage. The system adopts PRS algorithm based on RS erasure code [3] to reduce the storage resource consumption caused by the data redundancy and designs the load balancing strategy to guarantee the load balancing of each disaster recovery center in the system. © 2014 SERSC.

Data generated by various fields are increasing exponentially and thus results in challenges for data performances in both scales of diversity and complexity. The problem how to solve the bottlenecks of low-bandwidth networks has been of fatal significance for all kinds of network status. We present a new approach on improved optimization for data disaster recovery system (DDRS) over low-bandwidth networks that not only aims to improve the defects and deficiencies of mainstream DDRS but also helps ensure the reliable network resources for operators to conduct multi-services. A novel bandwidth self-adaptive approach (BSAA) for data packing replication was essentially established to make contribution to the integral performance improvement. A Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for predicting network status was also built to ensure system availability and stability. Experiments showed that the DDRS over low-bandwidth networks named InfoDr can effectively optimize the workload with better performance and better application self-adaptability for multi-services.

With the increasing abundance of Web Services across Internet, Quality of Service (QoS)-based service recommendation has become a hot issue. It is necessary to predict the missing values of QoS for service recommendation. Because Web services run on the Internet, their network locations may be anther critical factor for QoS prediction. Although there have existed many works on QoS prediction, few consider the influence of the network locations of users or Web Services. In this paper, we propose a novel collaborative QoS prediction framework with network location-based regularization (NLBR). We first elaborate the popular Matrix Factorization (MF) model for missing values prediction. Then, by taking advantage of the local connectivity between Web services users, we incorporate network location information to identify the neighborhood. We conduct the experiments on a public large-scale real-world QoS dataset, Experiments show that our proposed approaches have the better prediction performance compared with the existed approaches. © 2014 SERSC.
