Stencils are finite-difference algorithms for solving large-scale and high-dimension partial differential equations. Due to the data dependences among the iterative statements in Stencils, traditional Stencil computations are be executed serially, rather than in parallel. It's challenging to design an effective and scalable Stencil parallelized method. To address the issue of 3D data space computing, we present a serial execution model based on multi-layers symmetric Stencil method and time skewing techniques. Within this model, the iteration space is divided to multiple tiles based on time skewing, where the executive process is ordered by the sequence of tiles, and the nodes in each individual tile can be swept repeatedly to improve the data locality. In addition, we propose a novel 3D iterative space alternate tiling Stencil parallel method, which subdivides the iteration space along high dimension, and changes the execution sequence of tiles to reduce the data dependency and communication cost, where the partial order of tiles is still guaranteed. Experimental results demonstrate our proposed alternative tiling parallel method achieves better parallel efficiency and scalability compared with the domain-decomposition methods.

Improvements in ways of game controlling in recent years yielded higher level of interaction. Release of motion controller devices changed conventional ways of controlling games that have been used so far. Microsoft®;Kinect™ (Microsoft Corporation, WA, USA) recognizes motions of the players as game controlling inputs. Although touchless interaction is perceived to be attractive, games mimicking real life activities may benefit from hand-held tangible objects for the player to get more involved into game. In this study, a tangible gameplay interaction method is developed using Microsoft®;Kinect™ that senses hand-held objects with their dimensions and incorporates them into gameplay. Proposed algorithm is implemented on an experimental game, and a user study is performed to measure effects of tangible interaction on Kinect gameplay experience. Results revealed that an improved gameplay with more natural and accurate motion controlling is achieved. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The paper presents results of numerical studies devoted to an active flow control method applied to jet flow and focusses on rectangular jets with aspect ratio Ar = 1, 2 and 3. Square and rectangular jets are more unstable than their circular counterparts, which is expressed by an increased intensity of mixing. It is shown that the application of a suitable excitation (forcing) at the jet nozzle can qualitatively alter the character of the flow, resulting in an increased spreading rate of passive tracer. The excitation is obtained from a superposition of axial and helical forcing terms. We study the mixing in the flow upon varying parameters such as the frequency of the excitations and possible phase shifts between components. The numerical results are obtained applying LES and DNS based on a high-order compact difference code for the incompressible flows.

Device simulation of a novel strained silicon channel RF LDMOS

In this paper we propose a novel RF LDMOS structure which employs a thin strained silicon layer at the top of both the channel and the N-Drift region. The strain is induced by a relaxed Si0.8Ge0.2 layer which sits on top of a compositionally graded SiGe buffer. We have used a 2D device simulator to investigate improvements in the output characteristics of the device including saturation and linear transconductance, current drivability, cut off frequency and the on resistance. Furthermore we have examined the capacitance voltage behavior of the proposed strained silicon LDMOS device and have compared it with that of the conventional LDMOS device. It is observed that the gate capacitance increases in strong inversion with strain, but remains relatively unaffected in depletion and accumulation modes of the device operation. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Unified modeling Language is being used for modeling of business processes, real-time systems, embedded systems and hybrid systems. In software engineering, there are different techniques for verification of such systems. Model checking is one of the techniques for the automatic verification of software models. Earlier, these model were verified by sequential model checking tools. For very large complex systems, parallel verification can save verification time. DiVinE is a model checking tool for both CPUs and GPUs clusters to perform parallel linear time logic (LTL) verification of systems. In this paper, we propose a parallel verification methodology for UML models using DiVinE tool. We explain this methodology by the case study example of fuel filling machine.

The analysis of production systems using discrete, event-based simulation is wide spread and generally accepted as a decision support technology. It aims either at the comparison of competitive system designs or the identification of a best possible parameter configuration of a simulation model. Here, combinatorial techniques of simulation and optimization methods support the user in finding optimal solutions, but typically result in long computation times, which often prohibits a practical application in industry. To close this gap, this paper presents a fast converging procedure combining a Genetic Algorithm with a material flow simulation including an interactive analysis of simulation runs. An early termination of simulation runs is used for unpromising parameter configurations. The integrated implementation allows automated, distributed simulation runs for practical, complex production systems. A use-case shows the proof of concept with a reference model and demonstrates the resulting speed-up of this approach.

Rehabilitation activities require continuous monitoring process in order to provide information of rehabilitation results to be analyzed by physical therapist. The purpose of monitoring is to help them to improve rehabilitation process. Moreover, a portable and simple home-based rehabilitation device can help patients to improve daily rehabilitation activity. Some previous studies regarding home-based rehabilitation process have shown improvement in promoting human movement recovery. But existing rehabilitation devices are expensive and need to be supervised by physical therapist, which are complicated to be used at home. Some devices (such as exoskeleton-type devices) are also not so efficient to be used at home due to large size and complex system. In this current work combination of sensors (flex sensor, force sensitive sensor and accelerometer) were assessed in order to be implemented as a multi-sensor unit for a portable arm rehabilitation device. Analog signal from the sensors will be conveyed to an Arduino microcontroller for data processing and logging. The results of rehabilitation activity can be used for further monitoring and analysis. An LCD display will show to the user the achievement of their exercise activity. © 2012 IEEE.

The National Airspace System (NAS) must be improved to increase capacity, reduce flight delays, and minimize environmental impacts of air travel. NASA has been tasked with aiding the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in NAS modernization. Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is an enabling technology that is fundamental to realization of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). Despite the 2020 FAA mandate requiring ADS-B Out equipage, airspace users are lacking incentives to equip with the requisite ADS-B avionics. A need exists to validate in flight tests advanced concepts of operation (ConOps) that rely on ADS-B and other data links without requiring costly equipage. A potential solution is presented in this paper. It is possible to emulate future data link capabilities using the existing in-flight Internet and reduced-cost test equipment. To establish proof-of-concept, a high-fidelity traffic operations simulation was modified to include a module that simulated Internet transmission of ADS-B messages. An advanced NASA ConOp, Flight Deck Interval Management (FIM), was used to evaluate technical feasibility. A preliminary assessment of the effects of latency and dropout rate on FIM was performed. Flight hardware that would be used by proposed test environment was connected to the simulation so that data transfer from aircraft systems to test equipment could be verified. The results indicate that the FIM ConOp, and therefore, many other advanced ConOps with equal or lesser response characteristics and data requirements, can be evaluated in flight using the proposed concept.

Results for ab initio no-core shell model calculations in a symmetry-adapted SU(3)-based coupling scheme demonstrate that collective modes in light nuclei emerge from first principles. The low-lying states of Li6, Be8, and He6 are shown to exhibit orderly patterns that favor spatial configurations with strong quadrupole deformation and complementary low intrinsic spin values, a picture that is consistent with the nuclear symplectic model. The results also suggest a pragmatic path forward to accommodate deformation-driven collective features in ab initio analyses when they dominate the nuclear landscape.

We propose a novel disc-based data decomposition algorithm for N-body simulations and compare its performance against a cyclic decomposition algorithm. We implement the data decomposition algorithms towards the calculation of three-body interactions in the Stillinger-Weber potential for a system of water molecules. The performance is studied in terms of load balance behavior and speedup from the MPI implementations of the two algorithms. We are also currently working on a performance study of the disc-based decomposition algorithm on graphics processing units (GPUs). © 2012 IEEE.
