A Comparative Evaluation of a Mesoscale Model and Atmospheric Global Circulation Model for Air Quality simulation: A Multiscale, Multisite Evaluation

Concentrations of atmospheric pollutants are strongly influenced by meteorological parameters like rainfall, relative humidity and wind advection. Thus accurate specifications of the meteorological fields, and their effects on pollutants, are critical requirements for successful modelling of air pollution. In terms of their applications, pollutant concentration models can be used in different ways; in one, short term high resolution forecasts are generated to predict and manage urban pollution. Another application of dynamical pollution models is to generate outlook for a given airbasin, such as over a large city. An important question is application-specific model configuration for the meteorological simulations. While a meso-scale model provides a high-resolution configuration, a global model allows better simulation of large-sale fields through its global environment. Our objective is to comparatively evaluate a meso-scale atmospheric model (MM5) and atmospheric global circulation model (AGCM) in simulating different species of pollutants over different airbasins. In this study we consider four locations: ITO (Central Delhi), Sirifort (South Delhi), Bandra (Mumbai) and Karve Road (Pune). The results show that both the model configurations provide comparable skills in simulation of monthly and annual loads, although the skill of the meso-scale model is somewhat higher, especially at shorter time scales.

In ab-initio Configuration Interaction calculations, the nuclear wavefunction is expanded in Slater determinants of single-nucleon wavefunctions and the many-body Schrodinger equation becomes a large sparse matrix problem. The challenge is to reach numerical convergence to within quantified numerical uncertainties for physical observables using finite truncations of the infinite-dimensional basis space. We discuss strategies for constructing and solving the resulting large sparse matrix eigenvalue problems on current multicore computer architectures. Several of these strategies have been implemented in the code MFDn, a hybrid MPI/OpenMP Fortran code for ab-initio nuclear structure calculations that can scale to 100,000 cores and more. Finally, we will conclude with some recent results for 12C including emerging collective phenomena such as rotational band structures using SRG evolved chiral N3LO interactions.

Since its fabrication in 2004 by A. Geim, K. Novoselov and colleagues at University of Manchester [1], graphene has been considered as a promising candidate material for future nanoelectronics applications. This is due to its high mobility and excellent thermal conductivity. Although graphene is a zero band gap semiconductor but by patterning it into graphene nanoribbons (GNR) (i.e. ribbons a few nanometers wide), nonzero band gap can be achieved. In order to use GNR in electronic devices, it is essential to study its mobility and the associated scattering mechanisms. As the technology develops, effects of extrinsic scattering mechanisms such as line edge roughness vanish while the intrinsic mechanisms effects such as phonon scattering become more pronounced.

The purpose of this research was to improve the current treatment process for Pectus Carinatum (PC). PC is a chest deformity where the sternum and surrounding area are pushed outwards as a result of an excessive amount of rib cartilage. The current treatment process involves wearing a chest brace to slowly pull the shape of the chest back into a normal shape. The current treatment process lasts for about seven months and the brace has to be worn for at least seven hours each day during this process [1]. © 2011 IEEE.

Every agent in a society initially possesses a set of personal norms. Group norms emerge when agents interact with one another and exchange information in such a way that multiple agents begin to acquire the same personal norm. This emergence is the result of information transmission, social enforcement, and internalization. If a population contains a single group norm, as a result of every agent in the population acquiring the same personal norm, then it can be said that a consensus has been reached by the population. We model the formation of consensus in silico by adapting a recently developed model of norm emergence to a multi-agent simulation. A screening experiment is conducted to identify the significant parameters of our model and verify that our model is capable of producing a consensus. The experimental results show that our model can attain consensus as well as two additional states of information equilibrium. The results also indicate that both network structure and agent behavior play an important role in the formation of consensus. In addition, it is shown that the formation of consensus is sensitive to the simulation parameter settings, and certain values can prevent its formation entirely.

Fractional order systems, which involve integration and differentiation of non integer order, are increasingly being used in the fields of control systems, robotics, signal processing and circuit theory. Traditionally, the analysis of fractional order systems has been performed using paper-and-pencil based proofs or computer algebra systems. These analysis techniques compromise the accuracy of their results and thus are not recommended to be used for safety-critical fractional order systems. To overcome this limitation, we propose to leverage upon the high expressiveness of higher-order logic to formalize the theory of fractional calculus, which is the foremost mathematical concept in analyzing fractional order systems. This paper provides a higher-order-logic formalization of fractional calculus based on the Riemann-Liouville approach using the HOL theorem prover. To demonstrate the usefulness of the reported formalization, we utilize it to formally analyze some fractional order systems, namely, a fractional electrical component Resistoductance, a fractional integrator and a fractional differentiator circuit.

The concept of situation is central to the decision making processes of both human and software agents. The recognition of situation facilitates decision processes that ultimately result in action selection. Cognitive agent architectures that incorporate the concept of situation provide the opportunity for more sophisticated representations of human behavior and for more sophisticated decision support applications. This paper provides an overview of a general cognitive architecture for use in multi-agent simulation with the concept of situation central to the action selection and decision making process.

Clinical symptoms of gastrointestinal (GI) infections are often caused by the inflammatory response elicited to eliminate the invading microbe. Here we present ENISI, a simulator of GI immune mechanisms in response to resident commensal bacteria as well as invading pathogens and the effect on host clinical symptoms. ENISI is a tool for identifying treatment strategies that reduce inflammation-induced damage and, at the same time, ensure pathogen removal by allowing one to test plausibility of in vitro observed behavior as explanations for observations in vivo, propose behaviors not yet tested in vitro that could explain these tissue-level observations, and conduct low-cost, preliminary experiments of proposed interventions/ treatments. An example of such application is shown in which we simulate dysentery resulting from B. hyodysenteriae infection and identify aspects of the host immune pathways that lead to continued inflammation-induced tissue damage even after pathogen elimination.

Although modeling and simulation is successfully applied for several decades, the community only established a handful of M&S specific standards. Although the standards were applied enabling worldwide distributed simulation applications, in particular in the training application domain of military simulation systems, the general success of M&S standard efforts and their potential for general applicability has been debated repeatedly during several conferences and workshop. This collection of position statements discusses related questions, such as, "What makes M&S special that we need M&S standards," "Are M&S standards truly different from Software Engineering Standards," and "What metrics can be used to measure M&S standard success," and tries to contribute to establishing a methodological approach to identify future M&S standard needs. These position statements have been contributed in preparation of a panel discussion and edited for the supporting proceedings. © 2011 IEEE.
