The accurate computation of partial elements plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy and the stability of the Partial Element Equivalent Circuit (PEEC) method. Inaccuracies in partial elements computation, even at very high frequencies, may generate late time instabilities. On the other side, accurate computation of partial elements becomes prohibitively cumbersome when performed at high frequencies. In this paper a macro-modeling technique is applied, which is based on the use of frequency derivatives to allow a broadband characterization of electric and magnetic field couplings at a reduced computational cost.

There are numerous DEVS-based simulators to configure DEVS systems and run them. Current programs or libraries are based in programming languages such as JAVA, C++, etc. The existence of these different implementations has resulted in the formation of various groups that are not able to share models and cannot capitalize on model reuse. To encourage system modeling and simulator compatibility we propose a standard representation for such models. Such a standard must be simple to manipulate and validate, and promote the integration of DEVS M&S software on different platforms. In this paper we present an XML Schema for representing the structure and the behavior of DEVS coupled scenarios. In addition, we developed a simulator (xDEVS) that can execute these XML-based scenarios over DEVS protocol. We also demonstrate how an Atomic DEVS behavior can be represented using XML by proposing the XML Schema of an atomic model as well. This paper is one of the first papers in the ongoing research on M&S using XML as the communication platform.

It is a common practice to use simulation for validating different types of control and planning algorithms. However, the science of how to rigorously integrate simulation and decision models is not well understood and becomes critically important as the complexity and scale of these models increase. In our research, we have developed a methodology for integrating different types of models using a Knowledge Interchange Broker (KIB). In this paper we describe a supply-chain semiconductor application where the KIB has been used as an integral part of developing and deploying a commercial Model Predictive Control model for use in operating a multi-billion dollar supply chain. The simulation based experiments facilitated developing and validating the controller design and data automation for a real-world semiconductor manufacturing system.

Considering the large amounts of data that is nowadays produced in the biochemistry (functional genomics) it is difficult to extract the information from the measurements. There is currently also a great interest in the development of novel analytical technologies for rapid screening of disease symptoms in pharmaceutical and clinical applications. modeling and simulation can provide a useful help in understanding the relations of the measured substances and to minimize the need for measurements. The BioChem library presented here is the first free Modelica library available for mathematical modeling of biochemical processes. Three examples are shown to illustrate the library. First, a simple insulin model is presented. Then a simplified model of cholesterol together with simulations are shown. Next, a simple drug model together with parameter estimation in NONMEN are presented. The BioChem library allows for fast and end-user friendly modeling of biomedical systems. The graphical user interface provides graphics similar to that used in the description of metabolic pathways in biochemistry.

Frequency-domain macromodeling tools are of paramount importance for the design and study of microwave structures. In this paper, a reliable identification method, called Orthormal Vector Fitting method, is combined with a relaxation constraint. This leads to more accurate fitting models, in a limited amount of computation time, especially if the spectral data is contaminated with noise. Its performance is analyzed on a measurement-based example and compared to other existing approaches in the field.

To obtain the finite reachable graph of a Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) network, this paper uses a subclass of DEVS, called finite and deterministic DEVS. This subclass has been restricted to have (1) finite sets of both events and states, (2) the rational-number time advance function, (3) the time independent external transition, and (4) the selective reschedule functionality. For abstracting the infinite-state behavior to a finite- state reachable graph, we use the clock zone that is a conjunction of inequalities of clocks. A clock zone-based generating algorithm of the reachable graph of the coupled DEVS is proposed and its completeness and complexity are addressed.

This paper presents a new approach that enhances the performance of large scale cellular space simulations expressed in modular DEVS. The basic idea is to group cells in cellular space into smaller partitions that are treated as atomic DEVS models. The enhancement is achieved by reducing the large number of messages generated by inter- cell communication. This, in turn, saves large number of simulator iterations that were used to handle such communication. The new approach gives significant simulation speedup over the conventional techniques of representing cells in DEVS. A landslide slope criticality model is used to perform some computational experiments to demonstrate the simulation speedup of our approach.
