modeling and simulation has become a driving force within the engineering and science communities as the cost of, and time for, experimentation continues to rise. Some areas of study, such as chemistry and biology, may not even have the ability to fully evaluate certain processes experimentally, making modeling and simulation even more important. The situation has led many areas of research to the necessity of modeling and simulating various processes using computers. In addition, the rise in computational capabilities (the supercomputers of a decade ago are outmoded by the PC clusters of today), has led to a paradigm shift from using the computer resources only available to a few researchers to a tool now available to many people. Researchers at the U.S. Air Force Academy are working to bring these modeling and simulation tools into the classroom and laboratories for students to learn the capabilities, and limitations, of modern computational tools. Descriptions of how modeling and simulation is performed at the Academy are included, as well as details about the computational resources being used. Most importantly, descriptions of the methods used to bring these tools to the classroom are described in detail.

We examine motion realism in terms of salient communicative features. We argue that motion is amenable to a parameterization based on Laban Movement Analysis that yields real-time control over motion qualities, and that these qualities carry discernable and useful non-verbal information about the character’s personality or emotional state. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

On the Need for Contextualized Introspective Models to Improve Reuse and Composability of Defense simulations

Model reuse is a longstanding challenge within the defense simulation modeling community. While other disciplines successfully apply component-based approach to build systems, this approach has proven difficult to apply in simulation model development. The significance of employing explicit and distinct experimental frames to support reuse is already well recognized. Yet, characterization of the original context of a model is one of the least appreciated aspects and central to reuse and composability. Methods and tools are needed to provide mechanisms for structured representation and storage of context information, effective ways for retrieving it, and the possibility to relate it to the developer's intention. To this end, the basic model-simulator-experimental frame viewpoint is revisited to assert the role of context in reuse. The significance of separating concept, content, context, and simulator is discussed under the discrete-event system specification (DEVS) framework to provide a basis and rationale for contextualized simulation models. An abstract design strategy is presented to facilitate packaging and distribution of concept and context specification objects along with simulation models to improve reuse and composability. © 2004, The Society for modeling and simulation International. Structural changes, i.e. the creation and deletion of components, and the change of interactions are salient features of adaptive systems. To model and specify these systems, variable structure models are required, i.e. models that entail in their own description the possibility to change their structure. To execute these models, a simulator with a clear semantic of intertwining structural and non-structural changes is required. In JAMES (Java-based agent modeling environment for simulation), different simulator components, e.g., for paced, unpaced, sequential, and parallel simulation, support the continuous use of models and simulation from specification to testing and a composition of the simulation engine on demand. Two types of simulator components for variable structure models are developed and integrated into the simulation layer; the implications are discussed.

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a critical reliability concern for microchips. This paper presents a computer-aided design tool for ESD protection design and applications. Specifically, we develop an improved and robust MOS model and implement such a model into the industry standard Cadence SPICE for ESD circuit simulation. Experimental data measured from the transmission line pulsing (TLP) technique and human body model (HBM) tester are included in support of the model.

Federated simulations address the need for interoperability, as well as the improvement of reuse and composability. The focal goal in a federated simulation is to facilitate composable simulations by standardizing interfaces to assure technical interoperability among disparate simulations. Yet, existing federated simulation infrastructures neither facilitate substantive interoperability nor are dynamically extensible. Emergent Web services technologies hold out the potential to significantly improve the development of interoperable, extensible, and dynamically composable federations. As such, recent initiatives (i.e., XMSF) are urging the use of open standards that can be applied within an extensible framework for next generation modeling and simulation applications. We discuss how the realization of multimodel and multisimulation formalisms in terms of semantic Web and agent technologies may bring new vistas to demonstrate runtime model discovery, instantiation, composition, and interoperation.

In this article, the following is done: (1) a systematic and comprehensive classification of input is given and the relevance of perception as an important type of input in intelligent systems is pointed out, (2) a categorization of perception is given and anticipation is presented as a type of perception, (3) the inclusion of anticipation in simulation studies is clarified and other aspects of perceptions in simulation studies especially in conflict situations are elaborated.

SCIRun is a general purpose problem solving environment that seeks to integrate the steps of preparing, executing, and visualizing simulations of physical and biological systems. The implementation of SCIRun is by means of an interactive dataflow network consisting of modules and data pipes exposed as a visual programming language. SCIRun also contains specific modules for bioelectric field simulations and visualizations and the combination of SCIRun with this package is known as BioPSE (***/software/biopse). This software has been in the public domain since 2000 and in that time we have developed strategies for software development, engineering, testing, documentation, and training. We have also continued to expand the scope of the SCIRun/BioPSE package not only through our own codes but by constructing bridges to other systems, both open source and proprietary. We have also created a repository for relevant sample networks and datasets with the aim of allowing diverse groups to test and evaluate algorithms using identical data and to share their results with the community for comparison of performance and accuracy. We present here a summary of the software system and describe specific experiences and conclusions with regard to creating and managing a large open source software project carried out within a university setting.

Building computational models of real world systems usually requires the interaction of decision modules and simulation modules. Given different models and algorithms, the major hurdles in building a principled and robust system are model composibility and algorithm interoperability. We describe an approach to the composibility problem including initial results. This exposition is given in the context of linear programming as the decision technique and discrete event simulation as the simulation technique, both applied to the design and operation of semiconductor supply/demand networks.

This paper studies the performance of several different physical clearing mechanisms in the electricity market. The study is done using the simulation tool, Marketecture, developed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Two cities, Portland and Chicago, are used for simulating the physical clearing algorithms. The algorithms were chosen according to their ability to serve as a proxy for some of the well known policies. Our results show that, based on the economic measures chosen, both cities perform very similarly under the different physical clearing mechanisms.
