More efficient and effective control of supply networks is conservatively worth billions of dollars to the national and world economy. Developing improved control requires simulation of physical flows of materials involved and decision policies governing these flows. We describe our initial work on modelling each of these flows as well as simulating their integration through the synchronized interchange of data. We show the level of abstraction that is appropriate, formulate and test a representative model, and describe our findings and conclusions.

Scalability of a low-cost, Intel Xeon-based, multi-Teraflop Linux cluster is tested for two high-end scientific applications: Classical atomistic simulation based on the molecular dynamics method and quantum mechanical calculation based on the density functional theory. These scalable parallel applications use spacetime multiresolution algorithms and feature computational-space decomposition, wavelet-based adaptive load balancing, and spacefilling-curve-based data compression for scalable I/O. Comparative performance tests are performed on a 1024-processor Linux cluster and a conventional higher-end parallel supercomputer, 1184-processor IBM SP4. The results show that the performance of the Linux cluster is comparable to that of the SP4. We also study various effects, such as the sharing of memory and L2 cache among processors, on the performance. © 2003 IEEE.

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is one of the major enabling technologies of high-speed networking. It is the first technology that allows a corporation to use a common enterprise protocol and infrastructure for voice, data, and video communications. ATM excels when applications require specific quality of service (QoS) and reserved bandwidth. It offers economies of scale in network infrastructure by integrating different traffic types. ATM offers a tighter coupling between the user application and network protocol. It places intelligence into the Wide Area Network (WAN), making the network smarter and allowing the network to become more like a computer and less like a dump transport medium. ATM is the ideal technology when it is desirable for applications with different performance, QoS, and business requirements to be performed on the same computer multiplexer, router, switch, and/or network. It enables network managers to flexibly adapt to changing enterprise communications requirements, evolving business environment, and fluctuating traffic volumes and patterns. This special issue of simulation: Transactions of The Society for modeling and simulation International aims at reporting on the state-of-the-art on research results in performance modeling and simulation of ATM systems and networks. The papers accepted in this special issue represent recent efforts by leading scientists and engineers from academia, industry, and government worldwide.

The attackers on Internet-connected systems we are seeing today are more serious and technically complex than those in the past. So it is beyond the scope of any one system to deal with the intrusions. This paper shows a modeling and simulation of network security in which the multiple IDSes (Intrusion Detection System) and a firewall coordinate by sharing attacker’s information for the effective detection of the intrusion. Another characteristic in the proposed simulation is the composition of a real intrusion by generating nonabstracted intrusion packets and, accordingly, the construction of nonabstracted version of IDS and firewall model components. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Human systems integration and advanced technology in engineering department workload and manpower reduction

LIVELY graduated from the University of Colorado with a BS in applied mathematics and an MS in mathematics in 1976 and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an MS in electrical engineering and the degree ocean engineer in naval architecture and marine engineering in 1984. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1989 after 23 years of service. Assignments included electrical officer on the USS Constellation (CV 64) project engineer for the DDG 51 machinery control system (NAVSEA) and DDG 51 Technical Director (NAVSEA). He was vice president of the PDI Division of Bird-Johnson Company from July 1989 to November 1998 where he managed various gas turbine and machinery controls related development projects. He joined Anteon Corporation's Systems Engineering Group as senior controls engineer in December 1998 where he provided technical support to the integrated power systems program (NAVSEA PMS 510) and managed the Office of Naval Research Afloat Laboratory. DR. MARK KIRKPATRICK is currently an independent consultant in human factors and work-load/manning analysis and modeling. He holds a Ph.D. degree in experimental psychology from The Ohio State University and has 34 years of experience in applied human factors. From 1982 through 2000 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as the senior vice president of Carlow International. Prior to joining Carlow in 1982 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as a member of the technical staff at North American Rockwell's Missiles Division and as a project director and vice president for Essex Corporation. His areas of expertise include workload simulation task analysis operator-in-the-loop simulation human performance experimentation statistical analysis and human factors T&E. Aboard current ships, such as the DDG 51, engineering control and damage control activities are manpower intensive. It is anticipated that, for future combatants, the workload demand arising from operation of systems under conditions of normal steaming and during casualty response will need to be markedly reduced via automated monitoring, autonomous control, and other technology initiatives. Current DDG 51 class ships can be considered as a manpower baseline and under Condition III typical engineering control involves seven to eight watchstanders at manned stations in the Central Control Station, the engine rooms and other machinery spaces. In contrast to this manning level, initiatives such as DD 21 and the integrated engineering plant (IEP) envision a partnership between the operator and the automation system, with more and more of the operator's functions being shifted to the automation system as manning levels decrease. This paper describes some human systems integration studies of workload demand reduction and, consequently, manning reduction that can be achieved due to application of several advanced technology concepts. Advanced system concept studies in relation to workload demand are described and reviewed including. Piecemeal applications of diverse automation and remote control technology concepts to selected high driver tasks in current DDG 51 activities. Development of the reduced ship's crew by virtual presence system that will provide automated monitoring and display to operators of machinery health, compartment conditions, and personnel health. The IEP envisions the machinery control system as a provider of resources that are used by various consumers around the ship. Resource needs and consumer priorities are at all times dependent upon the ship's current mission and the availability of equipment pawnbrokers.

The last few years have seen great maturation in understanding how to use computer graphics technology to portray 3D embodied characters or virtual humans. Unlike the off-line, animator-intensive methods used in the special effects industry, real-time embodied agents are expected to exist and interact with us "live." They can be represent other people or function as autonomous helpers, teammates, or tutors enabling novel interactive educational and training applications. We should be able to interact and communicate with them through modalities we already use, such as language, facial expressions, and gesture. Various aspects and issues in real-time virtual humans will be discussed, including consistent parameterizations for gesture and facial actions using movement observation principles, and the representational basis for character believability, personality, and affect. We also describe a Parameterized Action Representation (PAR) that allows an agent to act, plan, and reason about its actions or actions of others. Besides embodying the semantics of human action, the PAR is designed for building future behaviors into autonomous agents and controlling the animation parameters that portray personality, mood, and affect in an embodied agent.

We investigate the use of XML as an open, cross-platform, and extendable file format for the description of hierarchical simulation models, including their graphical representations, initial model conditions, and model execution algorithms. We present HiMASS-x, an XML-centered suite of software applications that allows for cross-platform, distributed modeling and execution of hierarchical, component-based, and reusable simulation models.

Software architecture is high-level software design, dealing with the structure and organization of software systems. A software architecture is defined in terms of computational components and interactions among those components. Architecture description languages (ADLs) represent architecture-level software designs. Different ADLs often have different intents; e.g., Rapide supports architecture simulation and Acme is intended to be both an ADL and an ADL interchange format. Experimental applications of two ADLs were conducted to determine the effectiveness of ADLs for architecture-level analysis of simulation systems; one of them is reported. Acme was used to model the architecture of ModSAF and to analyze its run-time performance. The model was used to analyze execution time at the component and federate levels and to estimate the maximum number of internal and external simulation entities that could be supported by the ModSAF architecture. The experiment showed that ADLs could model important features of simulation system architectures.

Internet based virtual reality offers the opportunity to render content in three dimensions. In addition, the Internet provides a medium to support collaborative activities. In this work, we describe how collaborative capabilities are integrated into the Interactive Land use VRML Application (ILUVA). ILUVA is a VRML based application that supports highly interactive functionality, live updates, and the dynamic generation of VRML content. The collaborative functions have been added in the context of an Internet chat session in which multiple users may participate from the Internet. In addition to the usual functions supported by chat applications, user information sharing is supported. The union or intersection of sessions from different users may be produced and reviewed in the world.
