This paper introduces Gesture Engine, an animation system that synthesizes human gesturing behaviors from augmented conversation transcripts using a database of highlevel gesture definitions. An abstract scripting language to specify hand-arm gestures is introduced that incorporates knowledge from sign language research, psycholinguistics, and traditional keyframe animation. A new planning algorithm instantiates and adjusts gestures according to communicative context and temporal constraints obtained from a speech synthesizer The system animates an MPEG-4 compliant skeleton using Body Animation Parameters.

A multidisciplinary, collaborative simulation has been performed on a Grid of geographically distributed PC clusters. The multiscale simulation approach seamlessly combines i) atomistic simulation based on the molecular dynamics (MD) method and ii) quantum mechanical (QM) calculation based on the density functional theory (DFT), so that accurate but less scalable computations are performed only where they are needed. The multiscale MD/QM simulation code has been Grid-enabled using i) a modular, additive hybridization scheme, ii) multiple QM clustering, and iii) computation/communication overlapping. The Gridified MD/QM simulation code has been used to study environmental effects of water molecules on fracture in silicon. A preliminary run of the code has achieved a parallel efficiency of 94% on 25 PCs distributed over 3 PC clusters in the US and Japan, and a larger test involving 154 processors on 5 distributed PC clusters is in progress. © 2002 IEEE.

Interaction with medical volume data has often been difficult, due to the large memory and computational power required. By taking advantage of current high-end graphics hardware, we have developed a volumetric virtual environment that provides the ability to help people interact with the volumetric Visible Human data set. The application enables the user to explore the interior of a virtual human body in a natural and intuitive way.

A suite of scalable atomistic simulation programs has been developed for materials research based on space-time multiresolution algorithms. Design and analysis of parallel algorithms are presented for molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and quantum-mechanical (QM) calculations based on the density functional theory. Performance tests have been carried out on 1,088-processor Cray T3E and 1,280-processor IBM SP3 computers. The linear-scaling algorithms have enabled 6.44-billion-atom MD and 111,000-atom QM calculations on 1,024 SP3 processors with parallel efficiency well over 90%. The production-quality programs also feature wavelet-based computational-space decomposition for adaptive load balancing, spacefilling-curve-based adaptive data compression with user-defined error bound for scalable I/O, and octree-based fast visibility culling for immersive and interactive visualization of massive simulation data.

IDS (Intrusion Detection System) plays a vital role in network security in that it monitors system activities to identity unauthorized use, misuse or abuse of computer and network system. For the simulation of IDS a model has been constructed based on the DEVS (Discrete EVent system Specification) formalism. With this model we can simulate whether the intrusion detection, which is a core function of IDS, is effectively done under various different conditions. As intrusions become more sophisticated, it is beyond the scope of any one IDS to deal with them. Thus we placed multiple IDS agents in the network where the information helpful for detecting the intrusions is shared among these agents to cope effectively with attackers. Each agent cooperates through the BBA (Black Board Architecture) for detecting intrusions. If an agent detects intrusions, it transfers attacker’s information to a Firewall. Using this mechanism attacker’s packets detected by IDS can be prevented from damaging the network. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

This paper discusses a concept of DEVS middleware that would provide a set of services for constructing discrete event models and executing them in simulation or in real-time. Although generic middleware such as CORBA and MPI supports simulation and simulation-oriented middleware such as High Level Architecture Runtime Infrastructure exists, there are many issues that either not addressed at all or have been inadequately addressed in existing systems. DEVS Middleware would improve modeling and simulations due to the beneficial formal properties of DEVS, enhance interoperability among components adhering to the DEVS protocol, and reduce programming complexity by hiding lower level simulation and execution details. The DEVS Middleware concept includes components for model construction and for mapping models onto simulators or real-time execution engines to support the novel concept of "distributed programming by modeling." This paper discusses several sub-layers that have been identified within the overall DEVS middleware concept, existing work that can be brought to bear on developing these layers and the integration needed to create a widely accepted standard. © 2001 IEEE.

Real time simulation has time constraints within which certain model execution has to be completed. Such simulation usually has interactions with a surrounding environment, such as software components, hardware components or human operators. A proper scheduling policy for model execution and an associated method for feasibility analysis of real time execution are needed. This paper proposes a scheduling policy and its feasibility analysis method for real time discrete event system specification (RT-DEVS) models. The proposed analysis method consists of two phases: synchronization analysis and feasibility analysis. The former checks if the model specifications are consistent with their interactions. The latter examines feasibility for real time simulation of a given model under the proposed scheduling policy and a given hardware resource.

In this paper the design and implementation of Distributed Real-Time DEVS/CORBA is discussed as an extension of previously developed DEVS-based modeling and simulation frameworks. The major objective in developing Distributed Real-Time DEVS/CORBA is to establish a framework in which the distributed real-time systems can be designed through DEVS-based modeling and simulation studies, and then migrated with minimal additional effort to be executed in the real-time distributed environment. This environment will provide generic support for developing models of distributed embedded software systems, evaluating their performance and timing behavior through simulation and easing the transition from simulation to actual executions In this paper we describe detailed design and implementation aspects of the environment which was implemented over Visibroier CORBA middleware and ACE/TAO real-time CORBA services.
