The simulation Exploration Experience (SEE) is an annual international initiative that brings together teams of students, researchers, and professionals to collaboratively design and implement distributed simulations for space exploration. The project allows student teams from universities worldwide to develop and integrate simulations of critical systems such as transportation, communication, and resource management. This paper outlines how students design and contribute to different aspects of the moonbase simulation, utilizing High-Level Architecture (HLA) for simulation interoperability and integrating 3D visualizations. Additionally, it highlights the educational benefits of the SEE, offering students hands-on experience in distributed simulation technologies, space mission planning, and collaborative problem-solving, with support from NASA volunteers, the simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO), and other industry partners. © 2025 SW 2025 - OR Society 12th simulation Workshop, Proceedings. TRANSIENT RESPONSE OF A BI-LAYERED MULTIFERROIC COMPOSITE PLATE

In this paper, a three-dimensional finite-element formulation for the multiferroic composite is developed and implemented into the commercial software ABAQUS for its transient analysis. First, a special three-dimensional eight-node solid element is designed to handle the multiferroic composite made of elastic, piezoelectric, and piezomagnetic materials. Second, a userdefined subroutine for this newly developed element is implemented into ABAQUS. Finally, the transient responses of a bi-layered multiferroic composite are calculated by using the direct time integration method. Two typical magnetic potential signals, Gauss and Ricker pulses, are applied to the composite with various time durations of excitation. The induced electric field shows that the transient response can be substantially influenced by the input signal, which could be tuned for the strongest electric output.

Electronic band energy of a bent ZnO piezoelectric semiconductor nanowire

The electric band energy variation in a bent piezoelectric semiconductor(PSC) nanowire of circular cross-section induced by the mechanical force is analyzed based on a six-band k · p method. The electric-mechanical fields are first obtained analytically in a cantilever bent PSC nanowire by solving the fully-coupled electro-mechanical equations. Then, the band energy is acquired numerically via the six-band *** considering further the nonlinear coupling between the piezoelectric and semiconducting quantities, the contribution of the redistribution carriers to the electric field is analyzed from the Gauss’ s law. Numerical examples are carried out for an n-type Zn O nanowire in different locations induced by an applied concentrated end force. They include the electric potential, heavy hole(HH), light hole(LH), spin-orbit split-off(SO),and conduction band(CB) edges along the axial and thickness directions. Our results show that the applied force has a significant effect on the band energies. For instance, on the bottom surface along the axial direction, the bandgaps near the fixed end are greater than those near the loading end, and this trend is reversed on the top surface. Moreover,at a fixed axial location, the energy level of the lower side can be enhanced by applying a bending force at the end. The present results could be of significant guidance to the electronic devices and piezotronics.

We present a first version of an algorithm producing autonomously responses in wireless sensor networks in order to mitigate detected malfunction and misbehavior. We were inspired by the low level mechanisms for response conformation, the degenerate behavior of receptors, of T-cells in the human immune system. The proposed algorithm uses a co-stimulatory feedback in order to adapt to changing conditions, thus enabling the system to choose a different response when appropriate. We evaluate the algorithm on a simulation model in OMNet++ and demonstrate its applicability for wireless sensor networks. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

We present the attributed π-calculus for modeling concurrent systems with interaction constraints depending on the values of attributes of processes. The λ-calculus serves as a constraint language underlying the π-calculus. Interaction constraints subsume priorities, by which to express global aspects of populations. We present a non-deterministic and a stochastic semantics for the attributed π-calculus. We show how to encode the π-calculus with priorities and polyadic synchronization π-@ and thus dynamic compartments, as well as the stochastic π-calculus with concurrent objects spico. We illustrate the usefulness of the attributed π-calculus for modeling biological systems at two particular examples: Euglena's spatial movement in phototaxis, and cooperative protein binding in gene regulation of bacteriophage lambda. Furthermore, population-based model is supported beside individual-based modeling. A stochastic simulation algorithm for the attributed π-calculus is derived from its stochastic semantics. We have implemented a simulator and present experimental results, that confirm the practical relevance of our approach. © 2010 Springer.

Markov population models (MPMs) are a widely used modelling formalism in the area of computational biology and related areas. The semantics of a MPM is an infinite-state continuous-time Markov chain. In this paper, we use the established continuous stochastic logic (CSL) to express properties of Markov population models. This allows us to express important measures of biological systems, such as probabilistic reachability, survivability, oscillations, switching times between attractor regions, and various others. Because of the infinite state space, available analysis techniques only apply to a very restricted subset of CSL properties. We present a full algorithm for model checking CSL for MPMs, and provide experimental evidence showing that our method is effective. © 2014 D. Spieler, E. M. Hahn & L. Zhang.

Structural changes, i.e. the creation and deletion of components, and the change of interactions are salient features of adaptive systems. To model and specify these systems, variable structure models are required, i.e. models that entail in their own description the possibility to change their structure. To execute these models, a simulator with a clear semantic of intertwining structural and non-structural changes is required. In JAMES (Java-based agent modeling environment for simulation), different simulator components, e.g., for paced, unpaced, sequential, and parallel simulation, support the continuous use of models and simulation from specification to testing and a composition of the simulation engine on demand. Two types of simulator components for variable structure models are developed and integrated into the simulation layer; the implications are discussed.

Modern web-based Scientific Visualization applications try to overcome common limitations imposed by limited internet bandwidth, server bottlenecks or network latency. A further aspect is the desire to gain platform independence by solely using instruments which are platform independent by conception: the programming language Java, the Virtual Reality modeling Language (VRML), or the 3D API *** present a prototype of a hybrid web-based Scientific Visualization system which makes use of the increasing computational power of modern desktop workstations and personal computers on the client side, and the superior performance provided by a powerful machine on the server side. In order to achieve high interaction rates and to balance computational load the user can dynamically assign selected tasks to his client or to the *** the scientific field of human modeling we have implemented a hybrid web-based toolkit for the modeling of human muscles and skin. Our application allows the on-line generation and manipulation of three-dimensional implicit muscle models in a heterogeneous network and it offers various parameters to adjust computation and response time versus rendering quality. © 1997 IEEE computer Society.

We review two key mechanisms of the biological immune system (BIS): costimulation and priming. Then we explain the relevance of these two mechanisms for misbehavior detection in ad hoc wireless networks. We argue that costimulation and priming can not only increase the reliability and robustness of misbehavior detection but also help increase the energy efficiency. We conclude by giving an outlook on future research related to the design of security protocols inspired by the efficiency of the BIS.

This paper presents in-plane crack problem in piezoelectric semiconductors under a transient thermal load. General boundary conditions and sample geometry are allowed in the proposed formulation. The governing partial differential equations for stresses, electric displacement field and current are satisfied in a local weak-form on small fictitious subdomains. All field quantities are approximated by the moving least-squares (MLS) scheme. After performing the spatial integrations, one obtains a system of ordinary differential equations for certain nodal unknowns. The influence of initial electron density on the intensity factors and energy release rate is investigated.
