We present Flee 3, an agent-based software tool for simulating forced migration due to conflict, aiding humanitarian organisations in emergency planning, and predicting displacement scenarios. Flee 3 introduces adaptable rules for agent movement and creation, along with a more refined model that considers factors like food security, ethnicity, religion, gender, and/or age. These improvements expand Flee’s applicability to various situations, including internal displacement and non-conflict-driven migration. We validate Flee 3 through simulations of historical conflicts in Asia and Africa, comparing results with UNHCR refugee data from ten different conflicts, and achieve an average relative difference of less than 0.5 or over 75\% forecasting accuracy. We also confirm that Flee 3 can scale to thousands of cores for real-world simulation problems, such as modelling migration in the Ukraine conflict. To showcase the relevance of Flee to practitioners, summarize two use cases: one involving a large migration research project and one involving an international NGO. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a critical reliability concern for microchips. This paper presents a computer-aided design tool for ESD protection design and applications. Specifically, we develop an improved and robust MOS model and implement such a model into the industry standard Cadence SPICE for ESD circuit simulation. Experimental data measured from the transmission line pulsing (TLP) technique and human body model (HBM) tester are included in support of the model.

Interlayer correlation of embedded quantum-dot arrays through their surface strain energy distributions

We propose an interlayer correlation of multilayer quantum-dot (QD) distributions from a rigorous strain energy calculation. This leads to a map of correlations, or interlayer alignment, based solely on lateral and vertical spacing (xdist/b versus hdist/h). We identify four distinct correlation regimes—aligned correlation, antialigned correlation, noncorrelation, and the transition zone between the aligned and antialigned correlation. Our prediction matches well with available experimental data for a broad range of semiconductors with low elastic anisotropy [A=2C44/(C11−C12)<2] and can further predict the QD array distribution for those with high elastic anisotropy (A≥2) by a simple shift in hdist/h. The agreement spans both IV-VI and III-V systems. Moreover, the aligned correlation regime produces a large decay in strain energy magnitudes in subsequently grown layers, which may contribute to their observed larger nucleation domains.

Pandemics have huge impact on all aspect of people's lives. As we have experienced during the Coronavirus pandemic, healthcare, education and the economy have been put under extreme strain. It is important therefore to be able to respond to such events fast in order to limit the damage to the society. Decision-makers typically are advised by experts in order to inform their response strategies. One of the tools that is widely used to support evidence-based decisions is modeling and simulation. In this paper, we present a hybrid agent-based and discrete-event simulation for the Coronavirus pandemic management at regional level. Our model considers disease dynamics, population interactions and dynamic ICU bed capacity management and predicts the impact of various public health preventive measures on the population and the healthcare service.

Neural Predictive Monitoring under Partial Observability

We consider the problem of predictive monitoring (PM), i.e., predicting at runtime future violations of a system from the current state. We work under the most realistic settings where only partial and noisy observations of the state are available at runtime. Such settings directly affect the accuracy and reliability of the reachability predictions, jeopardizing the safety of the system. In this work, we present a learning-based method for PM that produces accurate and reliable reachability predictions despite partial observability (PO). We build on Neural Predictive Monitoring (NPM), a PM method that uses deep neural networks for approximating hybrid systems reachability, and extend it to the PO case. We propose and compare two solutions, an end-to-end approach, which directly operates on the rough observations, and a two-step approach, which introduces an intermediate state estimation step. Both solutions rely on conformal prediction to provide 1) probabilistic guarantees in the form of prediction regions and 2) sound estimates of predictive uncertainty. We use the latter to identify unreliable (and likely erroneous) predictions and to retrain and improve the monitors on these uncertain inputs (i.e., active learning). Our method results in highly accurate reachability predictions and error detection, as well as tight prediction regions with guaranteed coverage. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The response of flexible pavement is largely influenced by the resilient modulus of the pavement profile. Different methods/approaches have been adopted in order to estimate or measure the resilient modulus of each layer assuming an average modulus within the layer. To account for the variation in the modulus of elasticity with depth within a layer, the layer should be divided into several sublayers and the modulus should be gradually varied between the layers. A powerful and innovative program has been developed utilizing the unique propagator matrix method and the cylindrical system of vector functions. Our new program can predict accurately and efficiently the response of flexible pavements of any number of layers/sublayers. Numerical results in this paper showed that, instead of assuming one response due to an average modulus, modulus variation with depth should be considered in any pavement analysis since it can capture the response envelopes of the pavement.

We propose and evaluate an approach for network intrusion detection in high dimensional space. This approach is based on an approximate solution to the nearest neighbor problem. Our evaluation is based on the KDD'99 data set, a Yahoo Web spam data set and another set used in the NIPS'03 feature selection challenge. The approximate approach shows that good performance in terms of detection rate and false positives rate can be achieved.

It is a common practice to use simulation for validating different types of control and planning algorithms. However, the science of how to rigorously integrate simulation and decision models is not well understood and becomes critically important as the complexity and scale of these models increase. In our research, we have developed a methodology for integrating different types of models using a Knowledge Interchange Broker (KIB). In this paper we describe a supply-chain semiconductor application where the KIB has been used as an integral part of developing and deploying a commercial Model Predictive Control model for use in operating a multi-billion dollar supply chain. The simulation based experiments facilitated developing and validating the controller design and data automation for a real-world semiconductor manufacturing system.

Modern web-based Scientific Visualization applications try to overcome common limitations imposed by limited internet bandwidth, server bottlenecks or network latency. A further aspect is the desire to gain platform independence by solely using instruments which are platform independent by conception: the programming language Java, the Virtual Reality modeling Language (VRML), or the 3D API *** present a prototype of a hybrid web-based Scientific Visualization system which makes use of the increasing computational power of modern desktop workstations and personal computers on the client side, and the superior performance provided by a powerful machine on the server side. In order to achieve high interaction rates and to balance computational load the user can dynamically assign selected tasks to his client or to the *** the scientific field of human modeling we have implemented a hybrid web-based toolkit for the modeling of human muscles and skin. Our application allows the on-line generation and manipulation of three-dimensional implicit muscle models in a heterogeneous network and it offers various parameters to adjust computation and response time versus rendering quality.
