Real-time holographic video communications enable immersive experiences for next-generation video services in the future metaverse era. However, high-fidelity holographic videos require high bandwidth and significant computation resources, which exceed the transferring and computing capacity of 5G networks. This article reviews state-of-the-art holographic point cloud video (PCV) transmission techniques and highlights the critical challenges of delivering such immersive services. We further implement a preliminary prototype of an AI-driven holographic video communication system and present critical experimental results to evaluate its performance. Finally, we identify future research directions and discuss potential solutions for providing real-time and high-quality holographic experiences. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

With the increasing popularity of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and the continuous development of the commercial airline industry, anomalous and illegal flights occur frequently, which imposes a great threat on the aviation. Accurate prediction of UAV trajectories is a great demand to ensure the safety of airspace. Existing popular ground target trajectory prediction methods cannot be directly applied to the trajectory prediction of UAVs, since the trajectories of flying targets are significantly different from the trajectories of ground targets. The flight trajectory consists of a time series of radar data, and the attention mechanism can improve the processing performance of the time-series data. However, the traditional attention mechanism only considers the attention of each data point. In this paper, we propose a self-attention mechanism based on temporal residuals, which not only considers attention of track points, but also implements attention distribution of track data on the time domain to better represent the global dependence of the current prediction moment on all track points. On the basis of the time residual self-attention mechanism, we propose a track prediction model based on time Residual Self-Attention (TRSA). We conduct experiments on the flight data provided by global flight data services website VariFlight. Experimental results show that model TRSA can effectively improve the target trajectory performance in terms of root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE). © The Institution of Engineering and technology.

Multi-Player Immersive Communications and Interactions in Metaverse: Challenges, Architecture, and Future Directions

The metaverse has awakened users’ expectations of an immersive interaction that fuses the virtual digital world and the physical world across space and time. However, the metaverse is still in its infancy, typically expanding multi-player applications (e.g., multi-player games) to implement a prototype with the help of 5G/Beyond 5G, Artificial Intelligence, digital twin, and other enabling technologies. This article reviews the characteristics, key enabling technologies, and driving applications of the state-of-the-art metaverse. We focus on the immersive interactions perspective of the metaverse from the tasks, inputs, and feedback across the users, digital world, and physical world and reveal the key challenges. Afterwards, we present a multi-player interaction prototype platform based on a cloud-edge-device collaborative framework. Also, we evaluate it with centralized and device-to-device (D2D) approaches to verify the efficiency and flexibility of interactions. Finally, we point out future research approaches and discuss potential solutions to enable more stable and higher quality multi-player interactions for metaverse services. This paper introduces a “green” routing game between multiple logistic operators (players), each owning a mixed fleet of internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV) and electric vehicle (EV) trucks. Each player faces the cost of delayed delivery (due to charging requirements of EVs) and a pollution cost levied on the ICEVs. This cost structure models: 1) limited battery capacity of EVs and their charging requirement; 2) shared nature of charging facilities; 3) pollution cost levied by regulatory agency on the use of ICEVs. We characterize Nash equilibria of this game and derive a condition for its uniqueness. We also use the gradient projection method to compute this equilibrium in a distributed manner. Our equilibrium analysis is useful to analyze the trade-off faced by players in incurring higher delay due to congestion at charging locations when the share of EVs increases versus a higher pollution cost when the share of ICEVs increases. A numerical example suggests that to increase marginal pollution cost can reduce inefficiency of equilibria.

Generative AI (GAI) can enhance the cognitive, reasoning, and planning capabilities of intelligent modules in the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) by synthesizing augmented datasets, completing sensor data, and making sequential decisions. In addition, the mixture of experts (MoE) can enable the distributed and collaborative execution of AI models without performance degradation between connected vehicles. In this survey, we explore the integration of MoE and GAI to enable Artificial General Intelligence in IoV, which can enable the realization of full autonomy for IoV with minimal human supervision and applicability in a wide range of mobility scenarios, including environment monitoring, traffic management, and autonomous driving. In particular, we present the fundamentals of GAI, MoE, and their interplay applications in IoV. Furthermore, we discuss the potential integration of MoE and GAI in IoV, including distributed perception and monitoring, collaborative decision-making and planning, and generative modeling and simulation. The Industrial Internet of Things or Industry 4.0 efficiently enhances the manufacturing process in terms of raising productivity, system performance, cost reduction, and building large-scale systems. It enables the connection of numerous heterogeneous devices and sensors into the internet network through the utilization of revolutionary techniques that transfer the manufacturing paradigm to intelligent processes. The traditional industrial internet of things adopts centralized architectures and complex encryption algorithms that suffer from several cyber-security threats and lead to data leakage, privacy disclosure, and high computational and communicational costs. In our work, we proposed a decentralized, efficient, low-power, scalable, secure, privacy-preserving, and trusting architecture based on a private blockchain network/smart contract and interplanetary file system technology for the Al-NajafyIraq oil refinery factory. That enables autonomous working and provides a high level of security authentication and privacy preservation, P2P communication, remote access, immutability and information backtracking. Traditional blockchain technology has storage limitation issues, most recent works adopted external servers or the cloud for storage purposes. Our proposed scheme addresses the limitations of blockchain data storage by adopting an interplanetary file system (IPFS) network;provides an efficient data encryption mechanism at the perceptual layer by adopting a lightweight encryption algorithm, high-performance, and ultra-low-power consumption ARM Cortex-M microcontroller. In addition, our architecture succeeds in merging blockchain technology, IoTs, and an IPFS with the oil refinery as an industrial application area. Moreover, it provides an efficient framework that resists common cyber-security attacks and realizes cyber-security requirements represented by data availability, integrity, and confidentiality. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper considers the distributed bandit convex optimization problem with time-varying inequality constraints over a network of agents, where the goal is to minimize network regret and cumulative constraint violation. Existing distributed online algorithms require that each agent broadcasts its decision to its neighbors at each iteration. To better utilize the limited communication resources, we propose a distributed event-triggered online primal-dual algorithm with two-point bandit feedback. Under several classes of appropriately chosen decreasing parameter sequences and non-increasing event-triggered threshold sequences, we establish dynamic network regret and network cumulative constraint violation bounds. These bounds are comparable to the results achieved by distributed event-triggered online algorithms with full-information feedback. A vehicular network underpinned by the 3-tier vehicle-edge-cloud infrastructure enables an efficient and safer travel experience. The compute-intensive vehicular applications are often offloaded to the edge and/or cloud servers to enhance the applications' Quality of Services (QoS). The underlying edge-cloud servers consume a high among of energy. Consequently, it becomes crucial to optimizing energy consumption in the offloading process. Current energy-efficient offloading strategies in 2-tier vehicle-edge infrastructure, do not account for cloud computing energy consumption. In this paper, we address this void by proposing a machine learning-based energy-aware offloading algorithm, which optimizes the energy of the edge-cloud computing platform. The offloading strategy is enabled by the Support Vector Machine (SVM) regression model machine learning algorithm used for the edge-cloud power prediction. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is a promising approach in energy savings. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

This paper considers distributed optimization for minimizing the average of local nonconvex cost functions, by using local information exchange over undirected communication networks. To reduce the required communication capacity, we introduce an encoder–decoder scheme. By integrating it with distributed gradient tracking and proportional integral algorithms, respectively, we then propose two quantized distributed nonconvex optimization algorithms. Assuming the global cost function satisfies the Polyak–Lojasiewicz condition, which does not require the global cost function to be convex and the global minimizer is not necessarily unique, we show that our proposed algorithms linearly converge to a global optimal point. Moreover, we show that a low data rate is sufficient to guarantee linear convergence when the algorithm parameters are properly chosen. The theoretical results are illustrated by numerical examples. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Diabetes is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide. Health professionals are aiming for machine learning models to support the prognosis of diabetes for better healthcare and to put in place an effective prevention plan. In this paper, we conduct a comparative analysis of the most used machine learning models in the literature to predict the prevalence of diabetes mellitus type 2. We evaluate the models in terms of accuracy, F-measure and execution time with and without feature selection using a real-life diabetes dataset. The detailed analysis is in the paper. © 2020 IEEE.
