Recently, federated learning (FL) has emerged as a promising distributed machine learning (ML) technology, owing to the advancing computational and sensing capacities of end-user devices, as well as the increasing concerns on users' privacy. As a special architecture in FL, vertical FL (VFL) is capable of constructing a hyper ML model by embracing sub-models from different types of clients. These sub-models are trained locally by vertically partitioned data with distinct attributes. Therefore, the design of VFL is fundamentally different from that of conventional FL, raising new and unique research issues. In this paper, we aim to discuss key challenges in VFL with effective solutions, and conduct experiments on real-life datasets to shed light on these issues. Specifically, we first propose a general framework on VFL, and highlight the key differences between VFL and conventional FL. Then, we discuss research challenges rooted in VFL systems from four aspects, i.e., security and privacy risks, expensive computation and communication costs, possible structural damage caused by model splitting, and system heterogeneity. Afterwards, we develop solutions to addressing the aforementioned challenges, and conduct extensive experiments to showcase the effectiveness of the proposed solutions. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. Epilepsy is a brain disorder caused by abnormal discharges of neurons in brain. It is one of the most commonly studied disorders in neurology. The research of epilepsy electroencephalogram (EEG) has become a hot research topic. We find that in epilepsy EEG detection task, many previous methods focused on directly collecting the data of each channel, but these methods seldom analyse relationships between signals. Therefore, we propose the Epilepsy EEG Graph Convolutional Network EGCN, which makes full use of correlations between channels to deeply mine data information. We specifically design 5-layer graph convolutional network structure for classification of healthy and epileptic patients. The method is applied to public data set (Boon and CHB-MIT) to establish a reasonable classification model. And we compare it with some advanced algorithms. The experimental results show that the E-GCN method is superior to many existing methods in classification accuracy. In brief, the E-GCN method can be effectively used in classification and detection for epilepsy. This provides new ideas for colleagues, who study epilepsy EEG. In addition, this also provides richer experience for diagnosis of epilepsy. © 2020 IEEE.

The Industrial Internet of Things or Industry 4.0 efficiently enhances the manufacturing process in terms of raising productivity, system performance, cost reduction, and building large-scale systems. It enables the connection of numerous heterogeneous devices and sensors into the internet network through the utilization of revolutionary techniques that transfer the manufacturing paradigm to intelligent processes. The traditional industrial internet of things adopts centralized architectures and complex encryption algorithms that suffer from several cyber-security threats and lead to data leakage, privacy disclosure, and high computational and communicational costs. In our work, we proposed a decentralized, efficient, low-power, scalable, secure, privacy-preserving, and trusting architecture based on a private blockchain network/smart contract and interplanetary file system technology for the Al-NajafyIraq oil refinery factory. That enables autonomous working and provides a high level of security authentication and privacy preservation, P2P communication, remote access, immutability and information backtracking. Traditional blockchain technology has storage limitation issues, most recent works adopted external servers or the cloud for storage purposes. Our proposed scheme addresses the limitations of blockchain data storage by adopting an interplanetary file system (IPFS) network; provides an efficient data encryption mechanism at the perceptual layer by adopting a lightweight encryption algorithm, high-performance, and ultra-low-power consumption ARM Cortex-M microcontroller. In addition, our architecture succeeds in merging blockchain technology, IoTs, and an IPFS with the oil refinery as an industrial application area. Moreover, it provides an efficient framework that resists common cyber-security attacks and realizes cyber-security requirements represented by data availability, integrity, and confidentiality.

Dynamic sequential neighbor processing: A liquid neural network-inspired framework for enhanced graph neural networks

Integrating information from multi-order neighborhoods is a fundamental strategy in Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) for capturing higher-order structural patterns and enhancing the expressive power of node representations. However, most existing GNNs treat neighbors from different orders as unordered sets and integrate them using static or parallel strategies, thus overlooking the sequential and evolving nature of neighborhood expansion. To address this limitation, we propose a novel GNN framework, SL, which integrates Serialized Neighbor Features with Liquid Neural Networks (LNNs) to enable order-aware, dynamic adaptation of neighbor influence. By modeling neighbor features as ordered sequences and leveraging LNNs' internal feedback dynamics, SL adapts feature extraction in real time based on local context and propagation history. This design offers fine-grained control over hierarchical dependencies and allows dynamic modulation of contributions from different neighborhood layers. SL is model-agnostic and can be seamlessly integrated with both classical and state-of-the-art GNNs. Extensive experiments across ten benchmark datasets show that SL consistently improves node classification accuracy and significantly alleviates over-smoothing in deep GNNs. These results highlight that order-aware and dynamically regulated propagation represents a powerful, flexible alternative to traditional multi-order aggregation, enhancing the adaptability and expressiveness of GNNs for complex graph learning tasks.

In this paper, we consider the distributed adaptive fault-tolerant output regulation problem for heterogeneous multiagent systems with matched system uncertainties and mismatched coupling uncertainties among subsystems under the influence of actuator faults. First, distributed finite-time observers are proposed for all subsystems to observe the state of the exosystem. Then, a novel fault-tolerant controller is designed to compensate for the influence of matched system uncertainties and actuator faults. By using the linear matrix inequality technique, a sufficient condition is provided to guarantee the solvability of the considered problem in the presence of mismatched coupling uncertainties. Moreover, it is shown that the system in closed-loop with the developed controller can achieve output regulation by using the Lyapunov stability theory and cyclic-small-gain ***, a numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained result.

$H_{\infty }$ PID Control for Discrete-Time Fuzzy systems With Infinite-distributed Delays Under Round-Robin Communication Protocol

This article is concerned with the $H_{\infty }$ proportional–integral–derivative (PID) control problem for class of discrete-time Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy systems subject to infinite-distributed time delays and round-robin (RR) protocol scheduling effects. The information exchange between the sensors and the controller is conducted through a shared communication network. For the purpose of alleviating possible data collision, the well-known RR communication protocol is deployed to schedule the data transmissions. To stabilize the target system with guaranteed $H_{\infty }$ performance index, a novel yet easy-to-implement fuzzy PID controller is developed whose integral term is calculated based on the past measurements defined in a limited time window with hope to improve computational efficiency and reduce accumulation error. Based on the Lyapunov stability theory and the convex optimization technique, sufficient conditions are derived to ensure the exponential stability as well as the $H_{\infty }$ disturbance attenuation/rejection capacity of the underlying system. Furthermore, by utilizing the cone complementarity linearization algorithm, the nonconvex controller design problem is transformed into an iterative optimization one that facilitates the controller implementation. Finally, simulation examples are given to show the effectiveness and correctness of the developed control method.

Cloud computing enables remote execution of users' tasks. The pervasive adoption of cloud computing in smart cities' services and applications requires timely execution of tasks adhering to Quality of Services (QoS). However, the increasing use of computing servers exacerbates the issues of high energy consumption, operating costs, and environmental pollution. Maximizing the performance and minimizing the energy in a cloud data center is challenging. In this paper, we propose a performance and energy optimization bi-objective algorithm to tradeoff the contradicting performance and energy objectives. An evolutionary algorithm-based multi-objective optimization is for the first time proposed using system performance counters. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated using a realistic cloud dataset in a cloud computing environment. Our experimental results achieve higher performance and lower energy consumption compared to a state-of-the-art algorithm. © 2021, CC BY.

With their high mobility, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) become appealing data collectors in hard-to-reach wide-area distributed sensor networks. Different from existing works focusing on the perspective of UAVs for service order optimization and UAV utility maximization, we consider the utilities of both sensors and UAVs, and innovatively model the competition among sensors (buyers) for the service of UAVs (sellers) as an auction game. A “unity makes strength” strategy is exploited. That is, to strengthen the bidding competitiveness, a group-buying coalition auction method that encourages sensors to form coalitions to bid for UAV service is proposed. Besides, we propose a parallel variable neighborhood ascent search algorithm, we can quickly determine the approximately optimal group-buying coalition structure. Numerical results show that the proposed method outperforms the joint trajectory design-task scheduling (TDTS) UAV-to-community method and the single coalition formation game (CFG) method.

Linear quadratic regulator design for multi-input systems with a distributed cooperative strategy

In this paper, a cooperative Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) problem is investigated for multi-input systems, where each input is generated by an agent in a network. The input matrices are different and locally possessed by the corresponding agents respectively, which can be regarded as different ways for agents to control the multi-input system. By embedding a fully distributed information fusion strategy, a novel cooperative LQR-based controller is proposed. Each agent only needs to communicate with its neighbors, rather than sharing information globally in a network. Moreover, only the joint controllability is required, which allows the multi-input system to be uncontrollable for every single agent or even all its neighbors. In particular, only one-time information exchange is necessary at every control step, which significantly reduces the communication consumption. It is proved that the boundedness (convergence) of the controller gains is guaranteed for time-varying (timeinvariant) systems. Furthermore, the control performance of the entire system is ensured. Generally, the proposed controller achieves a better trade-off between the control performance and the communication overhead, compared with the existing centralized/decentralized/consensus-based LQR controllers. Communication Compression for distributed Nonconvex Optimization

This paper considers distributed nonconvex optimization with the cost functions being distributed over agents. Noting that information compression is a key tool to reduce the heavy communication load for distributed algorithms as agents iteratively communicate with neighbors, we propose three distributed primal–dual algorithms with compressed communication. The first two algorithms are applicable to a general class of compressors with bounded relative compression error and the third algorithm is suitable for two general classes of compressors with bounded absolute compression error. We show that the proposed distributed algorithms with compressed communication have comparable convergence properties as state-of-the-art algorithms with exact communication. Specifically, we show that they can find first-order stationary points with sublinear convergence rate O(1/T) when each local cost function is smooth, where T is the total number of iterations, and find global optima with linear convergence rate under an additional condition that the global cost function satisfies the Polyak–Lojasiewicz condition.
